Right on schedule I landed my first migrating striper of the year along the oceanfront today. I knew it was a new fish because of the sea lice on its body.  The fish was just shy of a slot.  It hit a 4-inch Cocahoe minnow fished off a one ounce jighead. I had one other hit. I fished multiple spots and made a lot of casts but it was just this one...

Capt JR reports a tough trip on the Viking Star. We tried a bunch of spots but only had luck with a couple of Cod. We will give it another shot next weekend! The pool winner was Audley Campbell from Shirley NY with a  6lb Cod.

I haven't been fishing this much this winter   but I have sure been enjoying my skiing. I'm up to about 60 visits to the mountains.  In recent weeks it has been good as ever with tons of snow north of us. I've especially enjoyed skiing with 2 of my grandkids who like their father and grandfather are addicted to it. I've also been doing some hikin...

Capt JR reports a less than exciting trip on the Viking Star. The wrecks were definitely not as lively or fruitful as we had on our last trip. Just a pick of Cod and a few Pollock on each. The first place pool winner was Robert Devoe from Boston MA with a 10 lb Cod. […]

Friday March 1 to Sunday March 3 Capt JR reports another excellent trip onboard the Viking Star. Loads of Cod and very nice Pollock kept us extremely busy with rods bent all around the boat. We ended the trip with an easy boat limit of Cod and a great catch of Pollock. As in the […]

Every time I do a seminar someone asks me where I buy my wooden eggs to use with the float and jig. I buy them online in a place called Craftparts. Here is the LINK.  I buy the 2 1/2 inch wooden hen eggs. You can buy these as unpainted or painted white.  I buy mine already painted. It's a homemade project from here.  Drill the eggs out with a 1/8...

Capt JR reports a tough day on the Viking Star. We did lots of traveling around but found just a few Cod scattered around. We ended the day finding good action on a couple deep drops and found some very good Cunner fishing with some little Pollock in the mix. The pool winner was John […]

Hopkins No Equal- 3 oz. In terms of fishing lures 2023 brought some surprises.  Normally I stick with the same stuff year after year because it has worked.  But in 2023 I branched out a bit and found some surprising new effective lures which I had not used much of in the past. We'll give these a worked next season. *Metal - I was out on a windy...

Capt JR reports slow start to the day onboard the Viking Star. However we did some traveling and found a lively area to get some fish in the boat. We captured lots of nice Cunners and picked some decent Cod and Mackerel. Definitely a positive sign and a great starting point for our trip on […]

It's that time of year when I will be going around various big shows doing seminars. I've got a great striper fishing seminar planned for this year titled Finesse Approach to Catching Stripers. I lived this during much of the striper season often turning to small stuff to fool many of my stripers from shore and kayak. Because of the abundance of...

Capt JR reports that we took advantage of the great weather and ventured out for the first trip of the new year onboard the Viking Star. We didn’t find the mother load but we did find lots of life with some nice Cod Pollock Ling Cunners and Mackerel coming over the rail. Guys who jigged […]

This hefty schoolie was one of three that I landed today from the Yak. I'm on the board for 2024. I went out today on New Year's Day in my kayak the first adventure of the year in the yak.  I had low expectations but was fishing a winter holdover location. I figured one striper any size would be an accomplishment. Well I ended up with three of t...

Capt Dave reports improved fishing from yesterday on the Viking Starship. We had a bunch of Sea Bass Ling and Bergalls in the catch. Unfortunately no Porgies or Cod to be had today. It does look like things are coming back to life after the big blow. The pool winner was Noel Miranda from Roosevelt […]
