A new year and barring any severe weather great fishing should continue! We are so blessed here with many days reaching the 70's and sometimes 80 degrees in winter. Trout fishing has been great this season getting a limit of ten per person has been easy a lot of days. They are hitting almost any artificial you throw at them and live bait is always good. Reports of large "gator" trout are common and large flounder seem to be more plentiful. Redfish are with us year round and this time of year can be caught inshore and offshore. While artificials will work in the creeks for the redfish cut mullet live mud minnows and shrimp will all but guarantee some lively action. Fishing around docks and oyster beds on either side of low tide seems to be the best method for these battlers Sheepshead fishing around the docks and old pilings is also great this time of year. Live fiddlers and clams the favorite baits of choice for these convict striped fish. Master bait thieves you have to b

After forty years of professional fishing you would think one would tire of it. But for some reason I still can't sleep past 5 a.m. even when I want too and I feel out of place when I'm not heading out for a day of fishing. I have always felt more at home surrounded by God's creation than man's not sure if it's the spectacular sunrise he paints or the sights- such as a bald eagle sitting on an oyster bank enjoying a fish breakfast dolphin's coming up beside the boat for a good morning salute…..I could go on and on. Some things are predictable but nature never fails to provide something new something yet unseen after all that time. The air was early fall cool the morning Jace Spencer and his boys boarded the Bayrunner for some big bull red fishing and bristled in a way hard to describe a way that usually foretold of a seasonal explosion of life. Calibogue sound was flat calm like a mirror as we pulled up to the Daufuskie beach in search of menhaden. They ke

Just north of the Savannah shipping channel lies a pile of rocks that according to the nautical charts is a "submerged breakwater". Local legend has it that back in the olden days when sailing ships made their way into Savannah this was a designated area for them to drop their ballast -which was rocks. However it came about in September it is a prime location for "bull" redfish or red drum. Redfish are probably the most prolific species of gamefish in our waters. They are found almost anywhere in local waters. Anglers chase them on the flats with fly rods and light tackle. Fishing on the bottom in the creeks with live bait or cut dead bait will often produce good catches. They have to be 15-23 inches to put in the cooler for dinner but fish up to 35 inches are often caught inshore. Personally when they get over this 30 inch range I call them "bulls" But in September the bulls start gathering in numbers off the beach sandbars and the rock pile.
