This underwater snap of a dolphinfish fiesta paints a picture of what happens immediately after one smashes your lure near the FADs. We've heard reports of boats seeing schools like this on the surface once reaching the devices and plenty of great catches of dolphinfish and big wahoo are turning up across the Metro, Rockingham and Mandurah FADs at the moment. Snapper Guardians 2024 not going ahead due to hatchery virus

Regrettably, we’re having to pull the plug on this year’s Snapper Guardians event following the detection of a fish virus in juvenile pink snapper at DPIRD’s Fremantle hatchery.

Some of these infected fish were the ones to be released at Snapper Guardians, but cannot be released to protect the health of wild pink snapper stocks in Cockburn Sound.

More than 220,000 pink snapper have been released by the community through Snapper Guardians since 2016 giving people the chance to celebrate fishing, pink snapper and Cockburn Sound and we look forward to bringing it back in 2025.

We will continue to work with DPIRD on other fish stocking programs including yellowtail kingfish, marron and trout to ensure more great recreational fishing for all West Aussies to enjoy.

Broome catches

Some big ol' barra have been turning up for @ayden_ieraci across some recent trips around Broome, with the @raptorluresnt Ghost Fizzers working nicely to entice the strike.

Boats

Dampier Creek was the pick of the local creeks and provided the most protection from the wind, offering barramundi and plenty of blue-nosed salmon. Crab Creek has been harder to fish and the barramundi there were harder to find, with blue-nosed salmon the main species caught. The mouths of both creeks offered queenfish and a few trevally. Willie and Dampier creeks fished very well for mud crabs, while tripletail have been hanging around the moorings in Roebuck Bay once again but strong winds have made it difficult to fish for them. The westerly winds and swell will start to get stronger as the week progresses so Saturday and Sunday are looking best for now but some storms are brewing so you'll likely get wet.

Shore-based

Barramundi have been firing in the Fitzroy River with Telegraph Pool and Langies the pick of the spots. Fish up to 1.2m have been taking live baits and Raptor Fizz Baits, Berkeley Powerbait Cullshads and Shimma Pro-Rigs. Some decent threadfin salmon have been among the barramundi but inland rainfall is expected to flow into the Fitzroy over the weekend and is likely to alter conditions. In the creeks around Broome, Barred Creek held barramundi along with bream and mangrove jack, while mangrove jack and bream have been caught in Willie Creek. The Town Beach Jetty also offered small barramundi along with bream, blue-nosed salmon, trevally and queenfish. Barramundi have also been hanging around the pylons at Port Jetty, which also produced bigger trevally and queenfish. Entrance Point held queenfish and trevally, while on the rare occasions the wind has been down the Town Beach has been reliable for a feed of whiting. Saturday and Sunday should see the calmest westerly winds this week but there will likely be a lot of lightning around so stay safe.

Exmouth catches

While it's been pretty windy over the past week, Saturday and Sunday should see it finally drop off, which means the water could clear up and make blackspotted tuskfish easy to spot for sight casting in the shallows as seen here from @indepthangler_josh.

Boats

Howling south-westerly winds, brutal heat and dust storms pretty much ruled out fishing on the west side this week, meaning boaties needed to take the weather into consideration and have a plan B on hand. Small morning and afternoon windows allowed for quick trips out to the Muirons which have offered good coral trout and blue-lined emperor, with squid, mullet fillets and Nomad Squidtrex vibes accounting for plenty of fish. It was a similar story for weather in the Gulf, with Cooper and Camplin shoals along with King Reef the best bets, mainly due to their proximity to the marina in case conditions turned nasty. These areas have produced blue-lined emperor, small Rankin cod and some decent coral trout. On the surface, crews have encountered shark mackerel, school mackerel and a few Spanish mackerel in the 8-10kg range. Crews using the wind and swell to their advantage when trolling have done well on Spanish mackerel in 10-16m depths between the marina and the golf club, with the lures of choice being Halco Laser Pros or Nomad DTX minnows. The Nomad minnows which get down very deep to 9m have also been snaring coral trout to 70cm from bommies north of the marina out from the golf club. The roasting 40+ degree days have sent squid out to the deeper water and activity has been slow. The next few mornings are looking nice for a fish but it will be very hot once again.

Shore-based

On the flats south of Learmonth big yellowfin whiting have been jumping out of the water to smash small lures and muscling in on the fun were flathead and trevally. Fly-fishers down at the Bay of Rest landed a few small permit before the wind made sight casting impossible. On Learmonth Jetty mangrove jack and bream have been caught and with loads of hardy heads about it has fished well for queenfish and trevally on the high tides and at first or last light. More hardy head schools were also at Bundegi but the wind has made fishing difficult there, as is the case at Tantabiddi. When the wind has been a straight southerly the stretch between VLF Bay and the Mildura Wreck produced bluebone and spangled emperor which have been feasting on crabs, so it’s no surprise that Cranka Crabs and Chasebaits Crusty Crabs have been the go-to lures. In the marina from sunset, mangrove jack have been taking mulies and white Berkley Shimma soft vibes. Bream, cod and trevally have been keeping them company and on the marina’s outside wall queenfish to 60cm have been landed. It should be decent conditions for land-based fishing on both mornings this weekend.

Kalbarri catches

"It ain't Crab Creek, but it'll do" - says Alex Chambers @boochface after finding some tasty inshore crays off Kalbarri. It just shows that even if it's windy, a delicious feed can still be on offer in close.

Boats

Water clarity has been an issue but last weekend Spanish mackerel and tuna were encountered in 30m depths at Bald Face and at the back of Jakes Point. When the water is murky, drifting a bait down into the burley trail right at the edge of the reef is a good bet for finding some pinkies, with very small sinkers working down to the middle of the water column a good place to have the bait. Demersal species have been more reliable, especially for the bigger boats that have been able to punch into the wind and head out wide. Crews have landed nice dhufish, Rankin cod and pink snapper, mainly north-west of town. Early on Saturday and Sunday morning hold the better windows away from the stronger southerly winds which will peak in the afternoons and evenings.

Shore-based

Is the Halco Twisty the most reliable lure ever made for tailor and other pelagic species? It can be launched a mile and the glimmer underwater has been irresistible to this species for decades, as Leigh and @nickihuntfishing discovered north of Kalbarri this week.

Mangrove jack appear to have taken up residence in the Murchison River and were taking baits and lures around the pens and rocky outcrops a kilometre or so upstream. Mangrove jack up to 40cm have also been caught just inside the river mouth at Oyster Reef. Cod were also in good numbers in the Murchison, along with bream which have moved downstream. Mud crabs have been in reasonable numbers throughout the system, as have yellowfin whiting on the Sand Spit. One surprise catch at the Sand Spit on the weekend was a golden trevally, which often come in chasing the bait schools. Chopper tailor have been showing up around the marina pens in the evenings and the odd mulloway were among them. North of the river, anglers on quad bikes have been catching big tailor, a few mulloway and the odd pink snapper. They have also found plenty of crayfish in the reef holes. South of town saw big tailor caught at Wagoe and Lucky Bay, with the latter spot also producing big yellowtail kingfish. A decent mulloway was landed at Red Bluff, which along with Wittecarra offered a few good tailor and the odd dart. Big tailor have been landed from the cliffs with Eagle Gorge and Pot Alley also producing pink snapper and baldchin groper. Saturday morning is looking like the best land-based fishing window with an easterly wind aiding with casting.

Geraldton catches

Boats

Pelagic fishers trolling for Spanish mackerel have done best on garfish or herring baits and landed fish up to 14kg. Similar-sized tuna have been the main bycatch. Off Pensioners Bank, deep-diving Nomad DTX minnows have accounted for coral trout up to 70cm. Bottom fishing has been tougher, but north and south out from Coronations Beach in 10-15m depths saw crews that anchored and burleyed up doing well on pink snapper, mainly in the 50-70cm range. They have also encountered baldchin groper and decent coral trout. One crew that headed further out west of the marina caught decent dhufish, baldchin groper and a few coral trout. Early on Saturday morning is looking like the only manageable window over the coming days, with the strong southerly winds and swell all over the place.

Shore-based

@mat.svenson managed to catch and release a couple of nice mulloway off one of the beaches near Geraldton this week, with a single circle hook doing the job with ease.

The first and second points at the Greenough River mouth have been reliable for chopper tailor. The first point has fished best in the mornings and second point in the afternoons. Herring and small pike have been the main bycatch. The morning low tides saw herring, tailor and school whiting at Southgates. Glendenning Road offered tailor and school whiting, mainly at the Tarcoola Beach end, along with a few dart. Behind the Lives saw mixed bags of herring, tailor, dart and whiting caught, while the rock walls on the town foreshore have produced tailor, herring, school whiting and the odd dinner-plate flounder. There were only a few squid landed on the north side of the Batavia Coast Marina but the size has been good. At Drummonds Cove, weed has been a problem at times but mixed bags of tailor, herring, pike and school whiting have been taken. On the reef at Drummonds saw bigger herring landed. Early on Saturday morning will briefly see a lighter south-easterly wind to help with casting.

Lancelin catches

Jon managed a few nice tailor and this guitarfish on Monday night during one of Peter Fullarton's Tailored Treks Tours. Brace yourself for some burning biceps and forearms if one of these decides to engulf your bait.

Boats

It’s been a case of do the miles and get the smiles for the demersal species, with boats heading out to depths greater than 35m reporting the best catches. Boats fishing closer to the beach have to put in the time to find a fish and they have generally been landed in smaller sizes. Inside the White Bank the snapper catches have dropped off markedly, but hopefully with the winds and swell easing this weekend after a late week blow the snapper will be back on the chew. On the pelagic front skipjack tuna have been prevalent throughout a range of depths and dolphinfish have been sighted by the hundreds at the FADs, although they have been very fussy to tempt. If lures aren't working, live baits tend to razzle them up. Saturday morning until around midday is currently looking great on the forecast and it should see flatter conditions.

Shore-based

The afternoon sessions have been the best to cast a pilchard for chopper tailor, with the average size sitting around 30-40cm and we should see that increasing over the next few weeks. The odd guitarfish, snapper, school-sized mulloway and sharks have been taking baits into the evening under the full moon. Mornings have generally seen super low tides, making it easier to cast to some inshore reefs for snapper and tarwhine. Setting up a burley trail has helped to catch a few tailor, bull herring or dart in the mornings too. Saturday morning should see ideal land-based fishing conditions.

Esperance catches

Boats

Good weather over the past week resulted in substantial catches including nannygai up to 60cm, harlequin fish up to 3kg at the Cape Le Grande headlands and skippy up to 3kg at Cooper Reef. Good breaksea cod and nannygai have been caught at Figure of Eight and Boxer islands, while big Samsonfish have been caught at Waterwitch and Giants Rocks. Pink snapper have been the main catch at Charley and Cull islands. Wylie Bay offered sand whiting in good numbers and some thumping King George whiting have come from inside Observatory Island. In Esperance Bay, squid and herring were landed in big numbers. Saturday morning is currently holding the best looking forecast to duck out.

Shore-based

Locals and holidaymakers have been bagging out on squid at the Town Jetty and when the sun sets, it has also produced herring and garfish. Taylor Street was reliable for small skippy, while Fourth Beach and 10-Mile Lagoon have fished well for flathead and salmon. Mulloway and big salmon have been caught at Roses Beach, along with gummy sharks at night, while Thomas River has been consistent for school mulloway. Bandy Creek Boat Harbour offered King George whiting, skippy and flounder, while Woody Lake and Stokes Inlet fished nicely for bream. Saturday at this stage looks best as the wind and swell will start to creep upwards into next week.

Great Southern catches

We love seeing kids chuffed with their catches during our fishing clinics and there were some black bream bending rods for the youngsters at our Walpole clinic! You can find more photos from our Southern Tour of SunSmart fishing clinics here. This happy snap from @wife_mother_creative sums it up nicely and she said the kids had a blast.

Boats

With a weather window opening up last weekend boats managed to reach the coral grounds and decent catches of pink snapper, queen snapper, swallowtail and breaksea cod were reported. Good numbers of tuna were hooked out from Quaranaup. King George Sound has produced King George whiting up to 40cm and squid have been in good numbers, with red and white jigs working well. All of Saturday and early on Sunday morning are looking ideal for the boats at this stage so make the most of it.

Shore-based

Tailor have been widely reported between Albany and Denmark, while a school of salmon were also active east of town. Around Lowlands saw good catches of silver bream and King George whiting. Emu Point has offered herring, sand whiting, skippy and King George whiting, while at Gull Rock skippy and King George whiting have been around. Either side of town on the rocks saw pink snapper and yellowtail kingfish, but make sure you always wear a lifejacket, fish with a friend and analyse the conditions before fishing if you want to do this. We also won't post any photos of your catch if you aren't wearing a lifejacket on the rocks! If you want free loan lifejackets, the crew at Trailblazers also hand these out. The town marina held herring, skippy and squid, with the cephalopods also coming from the pontoon on the town foreshore, Frenchman Bay, Whalers Cove and Fisheries Beach. Frenchman Bay also fished well for King George whiting, while blue swimmer crabs have been caught in Princess, Royal and Oyster harbours. Cheynes Beach held herring, whiting and skippy. Bream up to 40cm have been taking diving lures such as Zipbaits Rigges and Khamsin Juniors in the Kalgan River and big tarwhine have also been among them. The King River also held good bream amongst the snags. make the most of the better conditions this weekend.

Remember, you'll also catch just as many fish off the beaches than the rocks and it is always much safer to go with this option on the south coast.

South-West catches

There's beautiful wine, waves and fish around Margaret River at the moment and this lovely queen snapper landed by Jeremy Mole @southwest_oz couldn't resist the @berkleyfishing_aus Nitro Elevator.

Boats

Offshore fishing has been excellent when the right weather window has been found and although the dhufish grounds have been a fair way out, the size has made the long trip worth it. Most boats have headed to the Bouvard reef (14-24m depths) and around Naturaliste (40-80m depths) with good results. There’s been little bycatch but it has included pink snapper, harlequin and breaksea cod. Off the west coast and at the tip of Cape Naturalist saw tuna in good numbers and a few Spanish mackerel have also been sighted. Squid have been hard to find in Geographe Bay, although King George whiting fishing has been good at times. In Bunbury, dinghy fishers have done well when drop-netting for blue swimmer crabs and trolling for chopper tailor throughout the estuary, Cut and harbour. At the Capes, kayak fishers chasing demersal species and tuna have been plagues by big North West blowies. The next few mornings are looking ideal for both boat and kayak fishers.

Shore-based

Yellowfin whiting catches have been sporadic in the Leschenault estuary with many of the fish moving out to the beaches. Tailor were still in good numbers and can be caught at the Bunbury Cut or from the estuary’s drop-offs. Scooping for blue swimmer crabs at Australind was excellent and the sizes have been impressive. Targeting prawns in the estuary has been worthwhile also. The Bunbury Cut offered herring, chopper tailor, whiting and tarwhine, while the rock walls at Back Beach held herring, chopper tailor, whiting and decent mulloway at night. Myalup and Preston beaches have offered whiting and chopper tailor and there were whispers of mulloway at Stratham Beach. Good tailor and school mulloway came from Cape Naturaliste and drone fishers around Dunsborough have caught the odd pink snapper. Busselton Jetty was quiet for squid, but it did offer a few herring and whiting as well as blue swimmer crabs. The beaches in Geographe Bay have produced mainly herring along with yellowfin and sand whiting. Healthy blue swimmer crabs have been caught in the Blackwood River and the coming mornings should hold nice land-based fishing conditions.

If you can find an isolated bunch of rocks in a freshwater system that has a bit of whitewash behind it, rainbow and brown trout along with redfin perch will frequently lie in wait close by to strike insects or small fish that wash through. Youngster @hunter__hebb landed this nice yearling in top-quality ground and this kind of scenery along with marron season being open is why the South-West is a great region to visit right now.

Marron catches have likely peaked around the Wellington and Harvey dams and the full moon is unlikely to help matters as they become harder to snare. Thankfully, the Collie and Capel rivers, the Blackwood River around Sue’s Bridge, around Nannup and most of the waterways around Pemberton have all been fishing well. Marron catches in the Great Southern have also improved after a slow start. Redfin perch have been active at Harvey and Wellington dams and around Pemberton's deeper waterways. Trout have mainly gone to ground, but rainbow trout have been reported around Nannup and a surprise brown trout popped up in the Preston River this week.

Mandurah and surrounds

@hanyeoh13 had another great yellowfin whiting session on the flats recently thanks to the ZipBaits Fakie Dog working very well on this species. Keep an eye out for flashes of gold in the shallows and walk slowly so you don't spook them.

Mandurah

Boats: Out at the FADs dolphinfish have been thick and tuna have been mixed in with them. Pink snapper catches have slowed down as the moon becomes fuller, but boaties anchoring on the Five-Fathom Bank found their burley trails instead attracted chunky skippy and big yellowtail kingfish. Some of the sand whiting caught inside Five Fathom Bank have been over 30cm, while the 30m depths either side of town were a good starting point for big King George whiting. Cracker dhufish over 15kg have been landed at Bouvard Reef and at the back of Five Fathom Bank, while baldchin groper around 65cm have been caught on the same drifts. Saturday is looking best for the boats at this stage.

Land-based: The lead-up to the full moon and onshore winds in the afternoons have fired up tailor activity on the beaches with choppers averaging 40cm being caught from Tim’s Thicket all the way up to Golden Bay. Small mulloway have been among tailor catches and all these beaches have held good yellowfin whiting in the mornings. Tailor have been in good numbers in the estuary as well and have been kept company by plump herring around the 30cm mark. These species have also been the main catches at the Mandurah traffic bridges and the Dawesville Cut, which has been improving for squid catches leading up to the full moon. In the estuary, scooping for blue swimmer crabs has been better after dark and both scoopers and drop netters have found South Yunderup to be one of the hot spots. In the Serpentine River, soapy mulloway and bream have been plentiful and while yellowfin whiting catches in the estuary have waned, they have been caught in good numbers on the warmer days. Early on Saturday is looking best for now.

SECRET HARBOUR / PORT KENNEDY / ROCKINGHAM / SAFETY BAY / WARNBRO SOUND

Boats: Five Fathom Bank has been great for demersal action with solid dhufish, plenty of pink snapper, a few baldchin groper and good breaksea cod hitting 50cm being caught. The 40-50m depths have also been reported as highly productive. The back of Garden Island has also produced nice dhufish. At Stragglers and Mewstones decent tailor, herring and skippy have been plentiful. Just inside of Five Fathom Bank saw good King George whiting, while sand whiting have been thick in Mangles Bay and on Parmelia Bank. The same locations held squid in 5-10m depths and Safety Bay produced quite a few squid as well. Good squid have also come from Cockburn Sound over the patchy ground. At the FADs, tuna have been active and dolphinfish have been around but they have been skittish, so it works to keep your boats back and cast your lures away from the fish first then work it into the school. Tuna have been in better numbers at the back of Five Fathom and metre-plus wahoo also have been encountered there. Saturday should hold a nice window allowing boats to punch out wide.

Land-based: Beach fishing continued to produce excellent results with tailor averaging 40-45cm and the odd 50-60cm fish being caught mainly in the evenings at Madora Bay, Secret Harbour, Port Kennedy and Long Point. Mulloway were at these locations too and pink snapper have hit the sand at Secret Harbour and on the south side of Port Kennedy. These beaches have also offered decent sand whiting on calmer mornings. The Penguin Island spit offered flathead, flounder and sand whiting, while Kwinana beach and around the grain terminal fished well for chopper tailor. Woodman Point, the Ammo Jetty, Palm Beach Jetty and Rockingham Jetty have all fished well for chopper tailor, skippy and herring. Rockingham Jetty fished nicely for squid, as did Point Peron.

Perth catches

If you see a yellowtail kingfish prowling the inshore reefs around Stragglers, Mewstones or the reefs close to Rotto, flick your lures or baits out ASAP because they put up a great fight and provide a tasty feed whether you sashimi them or cook them up. After chatting with skilled and experienced fisher Scott Jessamine from @saltfix this week, he said when targeting kingies if he spots herring or tailor in big numbers around a shallow reef, he rarely catches kingies and moves spots. But if the herring and tailor aren't around, then it's more likely the kingies are looming.

Boats

Nice sand whiting have been caught out from Cottesloe and City Beach in 15m depths and demersal chasers have encountered a few dhufish and pink snapper in similar depths. Crews fishing the 30m depths for pink snapper have often been swamped with undersized fish. King George whiting have been in good numbers around Rottnest island and at the island’s West End tuna have been mixed in with amberjack, yellowfin tuna and Samsonfish. At the FADs, dolphinfish have been hanging about with big wahoo, with one 30kg wahoo speared this week. Another wahoo of 15kg was caught on a trolled Halco Max high-speed vibe. The 40-50m depths around Rottnest held good dhufish, baldchin groper and breaksea cod. These species have been caught in similar depths off Hillarys, Ocean Reef , Mindarie and Two Rocks, while Three Mile Reef offered pink snapper, skippy and good King George whiting. Smaller King George whiting have been mixed in with sand whiting at Windmills, while around South Fremantle near the old power station, herring and squid have been landed. Dinghy fishers trolling in the lower and middle reaches of the Swan River have found heaps of small tailor when the water is choppy and surface lures such as CiD Shiversticks have worked well on them. They have also tangled with big mulloway in Mosman Bay. Crabbing in the Swan was a bit harder this week with the 2m depths sometimes producing the goods at locations such as Claremont, Applecross, Canning Bridge and Como. Saturday morning looks like it will hold a nice weather window for the boats, so make sure you're courteous to others at the ramps and try getting up extra early to avoid the queues.

Shore-based

The Fremantle moles have offered reasonable numbers of squid in the daytime and a bit of burley has often produced a feed of herring. Tailor were biting best at North Mole after dark with unweighted mulies fished under glowsticks working well once again. Good tailor up to 50cm have also been coming from the rock walls in South Fremantle. Tailor around 35-40cm and herring have been caught from Port Beach up to Floreat in the mornings, while better tailor have been caught at the same spots in the evenings. The Cottesloe area has also produced tarwhine over 35cm in the mornings. City Beach fished well for herring and sand whiting in the gutters, while good yellowfin whiting have been mooching around beaches from Scarborough in the mornings. Good tailor have been caught at Quinns Beach, Two Rocks Marina and Yanchep Lagoon. Tailor continued to be prolific in the Swan River, as far up as Burswood, with better spots including Point Walter, Claremont, Canning Bridge and the Narrows once again, while yellowfin whiting have been caught on prawns and squid towards the river mouth at night. Flathead and flounder have been in reasonable numbers with the better spots including East Fremantle, Point Walter, Bicton, Applecross and Mosman Bay. They seem to be favouring the deeper water and micro jigs have been a good option. Bream were in good numbers in the upper reaches of the Swan and Canning rivers. They have been taking soft plastics along with Blue Lip Baits Micro Mussel lures around structure and hard-body lures such as slow-rolled Zipbaits Khamsin Juniors and Eco Gear SX 40s on the flats. A few giant herring have been encountered on the Como flats but one good tip is to keep your rod tip as low as possible when they jump so you don't lose your hook up. Saturday morning also looks best for the land-based fishing conditions with a gentle easterly expected.
