Pic of the Week!

The beaches around Esperance were firing for solid gummy sharks and a lot of them over the past week. This 20kg+ brute of a gummy was landed by local Lachy Warren @lachy_warren one evening but they have also been turning up throughout the day for fishers soaking boats.

Broome catches
There's been some big ol' mud crabs turning up in the creeks this week, including this beauty for the @reefchiefaustralia crew. The Aussie way to help viewers gauge their size in the picture is to have a stubby holder or beer nearby.

Boats

Once again creek fishing has dominated with Dampier Creek producing barramundi plus a few blue-nosed salmon. Dampier Creek also held plenty of mud crabs as did Willie Creek where they have been better size-wise. In Crab Creek there were a few barramundi but better numbers of threadfin salmon. Northern mulloway have been mooching around the mouths of the creeks, while near the entrances small trevally and queenfish have been caught. Only a few people have been fishing Roebuck Bay but tripletail have been sighted around the moorings on calm mornings and the edge of the Deeps could be worth a crack for cod or fingermark. It's mostly light to moderate westerly winds with a 1m swell this week but Saturday and Sunday afternoon look decent for the boats at this stage.

Shore-based

Willie and Barred creeks held plenty of mangrove jack along with a few queenfish and trevally, while Town Beach Jetty has been reliable for bream, javelin fish and small trevally. Port Jetty fished well for queenfish and trevally on the high tide and barramundi have been around the pylons, just make sure you use heavier gear around there as they do love to wrap around the pylons when hooked. Town Beach was the best spot for a feed of whiting. The Fitzroy River has been in flood this week but near Telegraph Pool a few barramundi were landed thanks to better access.

Big thanks to the crew from Tackle World Broome for their tips! Make sure you pay them a visit for the best gear and advice for your next fishing trip.
Exmouth catches
You know you're getting into pretty big banger territory when they become slightly darker in colour. This giant trevally landed aboard @onstrikecharters in Exmouth made the day for the @westcoastpoppers crew.

Boats

Fishing generally has been quiet despite the good conditions earlier this week, but if you open your umbrella tomorrow you'll end up in Fiji. A few blue marlin have been caught out wide on the west side and the inshore waters have held black marlin and sailfish. Good numbers of wahoo have come from the 40-60m depths and a few Spanish mackerel have been among them. Coral trout and the odd Rankin cod have been caught from these depths as well. The fringe reefs on the west side offered Spanish mackerel and spangled emperor. The water has been quite dirty around the Muiron Islands where coral trout, Spanish mackerel and the odd giant trevally have been the main catches. In Exmouth Gulf, the clearer water has been on the town side where the lumps and shoals have held spangled emperor, blue-lined emperor, golden trevally, coral trout, cobia, school mackerel and the odd Spanish mackerel. A few small squid have been caught close to town and mud crabs have been taken on the eastern side of the Gulf. The next decent window after the storm to head out is looking like late on Sunday or early on Monday at this stage but the cyclone might carry some fish out of the sea and drop them to your door given how it's looking on the forecast.

Shore-based

Whiting catches have been good from most beaches south of town, while at Learmonth Jetty bream and mangrove jack have been caught around the pylons and a few big queenfish and trevally have been landed from the end. Fishing has picked up at Bundegi where trevally and queenfish have been smashing bait schools. The town marina held its usual fare of cod, bream, small trevally and queenfish, while from VLF Bay around to the Lighthouse spangled emperor and queenfish have been the man catches. Wapet Creek held a few mangrove jack, bream and mud crabs, while spangled emperor have been the main catch at Tantabiddi.

These great tips were courtesy of the friendly team at Tackle World Exmouth. Swing by their store for the best advice and gear ahead of your next trip!

Kalbarri catches

Boats

Tuna and Spanish mackerel have been active straight out from the river mouth. Most fish were landed on trolled hard-bodied lures. Spanish mackerel and tuna were also caught at the Sand Patch but crews trolling along the cliffs missed out this week with not many hookups reported. This weekend is looking like it will cop some of the brunt from the cyclone up north so plenty of wind and hail is expected, but early next week is looking to be much calmer and could see some good fishing following the stirred up waters.

Shore-based

Tailor activity slowed down this week and sizes have also been down. Nevertheless, Wittecarra and Red Bluff have been reliable spots for choppers in the 30-35cm range and a few dart have been among the bycatch. Parrotfish, pink snapper and baldchin groper were landed from the cliffs this week. A surprise visitor to the Murchison River last week was a juvenile swordfish which was disorientated and hanging around Chinaman’s. It was eventually towed out to open water where it swam off. Bream, good-sized cod and mangrove jack have been landed from the river’s marina jetty and the Sand Spit has fished reasonably well for yellowfin whiting. Mud crabs have been caught from the marina jetty and at Castle Rock.

Shout out to Dean from Kalbarri Sports and Dive for his tips! Feel free to venture into his store to ask for advice if you're wetting a line around Kalbarri!
Geraldton catches
After braving the 49-degree heat this week off Geraldton, @nickihuntfishing managed to get into some mackie action. Make sure you use a wire trace when trolling off the coast for the various species of mackerel otherwise they'll snip straight through your line.

Boats

There has been an excellent run of tuna offshore, with 10-15kg models working baitballs across a wide range of depths, so it pays to have a lure trolling out the back no matter where you are. To be safe, make sure you have a wire trace on if doing so as various mackerel species have also been doing the rounds. Around Drummond Cove Spanish mackerel averaging 8-10kg have been landed and a few bonito have been about. Deeper diving vibe lures or garfish rigged up on strong gang hooks have worked well, with some mackies engulfing baits and putting on great aerial displays to the enjoyment of boat fishers. Very early on Saturday and Sunday could provide very brief fishing windows but after those periods iaround midday and into the afternoons could cop some of the rough weather dropping down from the cyclone up north. Be careful of hail or lightning if you're ducking out and it would be wise to stay closer to shore in case it quickly turns ugly.

Shore-based

The land-based action was chunky this week. Tailor catches have been very hit and miss with the better fishing south of town. Greenough River mouth has dropped right off and tailor chasers have fared best at West Bank and Flat Rocks. Most of the tailor have been choppers in the 35-40cm range but the odd big model up to 60cm has been among them. A few anglers have been getting their bag limits of eight but most have gone home with three or four. Herring and pike have made up the bycatch. The good numbers of herring seem to have disappeared from Southgates, but a few tailor have been about around the 35cm mark. The rock walls from Point Moore around to the  Batavia Coast Marina have offered decent tailor in the evenings, with some fish up to 60cm. Weed movement made whiting fishing inconsistent but on the hot days this week good catches came from Separation Point, Pages, behind the Lives and north of Drummond towards Shelter Bay and Buller River. Most of the whiting have been around the 30cm mark. The beaches north of Drummond also held dart and small threadfin salmon. A couple of 10-15kg mulloway were landed and released near Dongara last week but tailor fishing around there has been poor. A few have been caught by anglers from the Dongara rock wall however. In the Port Denison marina, Batavia Coast Marina and Geraldton Fishing Boat Harbour bream and 60cm cod (along with others too big to stop) have been landed. A few blue swimmer crabs have come from Geraldton Fishing Boat Harbour and the Batavia Coast Marina but many have been undersized.

Thanks to the team at Geraldton Sports Centre for their tips! They will happily provide you with great gear and the solid advice for your next fishing trip.
Lancelin catches
Pink snapper have been spotted in fantastic numbers this week and Peter Fullarton reported good catches were taken on his tours in January, with plenty of tailor among them. Those tailor numbers and sizes are expected to increase as we head into the Autumn months. Pictured here is Chris with another nice pinkie landed over the weekend.

Boats

There were plenty of people making the most of glassy conditions earlier this week, with most of them trying to troll up a mackerel. The water temperatures were down and there was not a lot to show for their efforts other than a few Samson fish, school mackerel and bonito. Most of the activity was around the 15-20m depths where large schools of small pilchards have been prevalent and caused plenty of pelagic excitement. Around the 20m depth line was also great to score a feed of fat sand whiting. Yellowtail kingfish have been encountered along some of the reef breaks of the bay, with burley and a floating pilchard on a gang working well along with stickbaits flicked into the whitewash. Sunday is looking like another relatively flat day out on the water so make the most of it.

Shore-based

The shore casters have been raking up some impressive catches with Spanish mackerel, school mackerel and cobia caught between Moore River and Wedge Island. Peter Fullarton said this could be from the calm seas and hot days helping to warm up the shallows. Pink snapper and a few mulloway were also landed off the coast, with snapper catches going through the roof heading into the weekend after the swell picked up. Drone fishers have been racking up a few species which are normally encountered further offshore with some dhufish and baldchin groper reeled in. There were some big herring along the surf beaches with some monsters going over 35cm! Plenty of dart were also landed along the northern gutters. Within the bay big yellowfin whiting (some up to 40cm) were seen in the shallows but blowfish have been too quick to steal baits, leading to frustrated fishers. The ZX vibe by Eccogear has been the best way to avoid the blowfish and tempt a big yellowfin whiting up for a strike.

A big Recfishwest thanks to Peter Fullarton for his tips on what's biting around Lancelin each week! If you want Peter to put you on to the fish directly, make sure you check out his Tailored Treks Tours page. Always a great time and Peter knows the best spots around Lancelin like the back of his hand.

Esperance catches
Some of the Recfishwest crew were in Esperance between Sunday and Thursday this week chatting with local fishing clubs and community members about their concerns surrounding the proposed South Coast Marine Park zones. This salmon released by Jarrad Lawford was caught from the picturesque Warrenup Beach on Thursday morning, just one cherished land-based fishing spot currently flagged as a no fishing/sanctuary zone. We're determined to protect access to great spots like this. Watch Esperance Land Based Fishing Club President Mitchell Waideman talk about why accessing this spot (among others) is so important to locals.

The newspaper article above is from the front page of this week's Esperance Weekender following Recfishwest's visit to Esperance between Sunday and Thursday.

Boats

There has been a cracking run of big nannygai, some over 65cm, along with breaksea cod up to 60cm at Giants Rocks, Boxer Island and Leg of Lamb. Samsonfish to 30kg have come from Mondrain Island, while queen snapper to 6kg have been caught at Observatory and Lion islands. Cook Rocks has fished well for squid in 15-20m depths, while thumping King George whiting have been caught at Lovers Cove. Herring, snook and squid have come from Esperance Bay in decent numbers. It should be mostly moderate northerly winds on Saturday which might see some calmer conditions closer to the mainland but the mornings from Monday through to Thursday should see the better conditions out on the water.

Shore-based

Just about every beach in the area has held good numbers of big gummy sharks. West of town around Christies Beach, Munglinup and Whale Beach have been the hotspots with Lachie Warren landing the monster gummy (pictured above) this week, while east of town at Poison Creek and Thomas River mulloway to a metre have been swimming with the gummy sharks. Salmon around the 6kg mark have been caught at Kennedy and Dunns beaches, while smaller salmon and flathead to 60cm have come from Stockyards. The Town jetty fished well for squid, herring and garfish, while the Taylor Street rock wall offered skippy and snook in the afternoons. Early morning sessions at Bandy Creek Boat Harbour have produced King George whiting and flounder, while bream have been ravenous and taking anything thrown at them in the afternoons at Wheatfield Lake.

Hats off to the very knowledgeable team at Southern Sports & Tackle for their tips! These guys love their fishing as well, so make sure you swing by their store for the best gear and advice before wetting a line around Esperance.

Great Southern catches
Will Atkinson @wa_fishing found this decent pink snapper lingering just off the rocks this week but make sure you tether yourself to the rocks, wear a lifejacket, avoid the wet rocks and watch the conditions closely on arrival if attempting to fish off the stones. The beaches have also been productive for decent pinkies so just keep an eye out for gutters if you prefer to go the safer option.

Boats

King George Sound has been consistent for King George whiting over 40cm and squid. Whalers Cove was generally one of the better spots this past week if you wish to target both species though, with most fishers landing a few squid first then using small strips of their tentacles as fresh bait to land the KG's. Other than that, it was pretty slim pickings for the boaties this week but drop netters in Princess Royal Harbour have pulled up blue swimmer crabs in decent numbers. Very early on Saturday morning could hold a good window before 8:00am but between Tuesday and Thursday is currently looking ideal on the forecast.

Shore-based

Salmon catches have been widespread with Sand Patch, Nanarup and Salmon Holes among the more consistent spots. Sand Patch has fished best in the afternoons and also held herring and tarwhine. Smaller salmon have been caught from the beaches near Torbay Inlet along with tarwhine and the odd tailor, while at Cheynes Beach a big Samsonfish was landed this week along with good numbers of herring, tarwhine and skippy. Emu Point and the town marina have offered squid, herring and a few skippy, while Frenchman Bay produced squid and small King George whiting at times. Bream fishing in the King and Kalgan rivers has been a little quieter, but when the water was clear blue swimmer crabs were scooped at Oyster Harbour and Princess Royal Harbour. There were some pink snapper plucked from the rocks either side of Albany but make sure you analyse the conditions on arrival, wear the correct footwear and a lifejacket if attempting this. Most of the deep gutters off the beaches have also been producing plenty of decent pinkies so this would be a safer option. Very early on Saturday morning could hold a decent land-based fishing window but Tuesday through to Thursday is looking better.

Cheers to the Trailblazers Albany crew for their tips this week! Swing by their store if you're after some top gear and advice ahead of your next fishing trip. Remember, you'll also catch just as many fish off the beaches than the rocks and it is always much safer to go with this option on the south coast.

South-West catches
There have been good reports of fat and healthy southern bluefin tuna being landed throughout the 30m depths, with @millfishing picking this fine specimen up on a deeper diving lure just off our South-West coastline. Make sure you bleed these fish by making a nick in their flesh just behind the pectoral fin and throw them into an ice slurry immediately for the best eating experience.

Boats

It’s been quiet offshore from Bunbury with a lack of pelagic action, although tuna were hanging around the 30m depths earlier this week. Most boats have opted to drop nets in the outer harbour where they have been rewarded with good hauls of blue swimmer crabs. A few boats have trolled for chopper tailor in the estuary for modest returns but reported better results when the wind and choppy water was around. For squid and whiting, most people have headed to Geographe Bay where catches have been moderate. The 10m depths just west of Busselton Jetty have produced blue swimmer crabs as well, while drifting over the weed patches in 4-6m depths off Busselton saw good numbers of squid. Sunday and Monday should see the best boating conditions over the coming days.

Shore-based

Tailor fishing has been excellent along the stretch from Preston Beach to Buffalo Beach, especially in the afternoons. Most fish have been in 40-45cm range and Preston also offered mulloway and pink snapper after dark. On hot days this stretch of coast has fished well for herring along with yellowfin and sand whiting. Beaches closer to Bunbury have been less productive, with Back Beach offering mainly herring while the Bunbury Cut held herring and small chopper tailor. Forrest Beach offered herring and a few tailor and divers have been catching blue swimmer crabs there as well. Scooping for crabs has been worthwhile in the estuary and yellowfin whiting catches have been good on the flats during the hot weather. In the Collie River small mulloway have been landed, with slightly bigger models caught on live baits. Busselton Jetty offered its usual fare of herring and squid with the better squid catches in deeper water, while beaches along Geographe Bay have fished well for yellowfin and sand whiting in the mornings.

Big cheers to Whitey's Tackle & Camping for their top fishing tips as always! If you're in Australind or Bunbury and are keen to wet a line throughout our South-West make sure you ask their very friendly team who love their fishing for advice and stock up on gear at their store. If you're in Busselton, the 2 Oceans Tackle team are also incredibly helpful.

The heatwave conditions have made freshwater fishing a challenge over the past few weeks with some water levels across a few systems quite low, but the in the upper Collie River the feeder stream around Wellington Dam produced good numbers of redfin perch which were eagerly snaffling a range of lures. A few rainbow trout were sighted but they were very skittish, so it pays to move slowly, use bush as cover and cast a fair way away from them before working lures with a slower twitch retrieve. The deeper sections of Harvey Dam have also held redfin perch although the sizes have been nothing special. They are still great fun to catch though and provide a delicious feed, not to mention you are removing an introduced and invasive species when you take them home which allows our trout populations to thrive even more.

Mandurah and surrounds

Mandurah

Boats: There has been plenty of action at the FADs. At FAD #10 a young customer from Tackleworld Miami had a red-hot session on dolphinfish this week. Some of the dollies were over a metre with trolled skirts and cast stickbaits working best. A few tuna have been caught at the FADs but they have been in better numbers on the 40m contour line where they have been kept company by yellowtail kingfish at times. A crew fishing that same 40m line encountered a big school of tuna going berserk among a baitfish school early this week and had a ball catching fish up to 5kg on bream outfits. King George whiting have been scarce lately, but the inside of the Five-Fathom Bank held plenty of chunky sand whiting, while some the skippy coming from the same area have weighed up to 2.5kg. Trolling in the estuary has produced tailor around the 40cm mark and big herring, while blue swimmer crabs have been widespread throughout the system with the early mornings producing bigger crabs in better numbers. Sunday afternoon looks like the next best boating window albeit with the chance of some rain.

Land-based: With the warm water temperatures it could be worthwhile casting metals or sending out live baits from the mouth of the Dawesville Cut for a Spanish mackerel or Samsonfish. Otherwise, the rock walls along the Cut have been producing a few herring in the day and chopper tailor at night. Tailor have been quiet along the local beaches but further out of town towards White Hills, Tim’s Thicket and San Remo have fished much better. On the calmer beaches closer to town a few yellowfin whiting and some good flathead have come from Seacapes, while squid have been caught at Falcon Beach in the afternoons. Yellowfin whiting catches in the estuary have been good and chopper tailor have been hanging around the drop-offs. Scooping for blue swimmer crabs has been productive, especially in the early mornings.  In the Serpentine and Murray rivers, bream have been hitting surface lures early in the mornings and a few soapy mulloway have been mixed in with them.

Thinking of wetting a line around Mandurah? These great tips were courtesy of the super friendly and helpful team at Tackle World Miami so make sure you swing by their store for the best tips and gear before your next fishing trip!

SECRET HARBOUR / PORT KENNEDY / ROCKINGHAM / SAFETY BAY / WARNBRO SOUND

Boats: Awkward currents have made fishing the FADs difficult at times but they have held tuna and a few small dolphinfish. Plenty of tuna have been caught on the way to the FADs and they have been thick at the back of Five-Fathom Bank, where a few shark mackerel have been encountered so it pays to have a wire trace on when trolling. Right on the Five-Fathom Bank plenty of solid skippy have been landed. Squid catches have tapered off but King George whiting numbers have been good in Cockburn Sound and around Garden Island. Mangles Bay and Parmelia Bank have fished well for sand whiting. Sunday afternoon or Monday morning looks best for the boaties.

Land-based: Beach fishing was productive with tailor in good numbers at Madora Bay, Secret Harbour, Port Kennedy and Kwinana. The choppers were biting morning and night, but when the wind has been chopping up the water they appeared throughout most of the day. Plenty of sand whiting have been caught during the day, while at night, school mulloway and bigger mulloway have been landed at Port Kennedy and Secret Harbour. Great mixed bags of tailor, yellowfin whiting, King George whiting, flathead, flounder and skippy have come from Long Point, while near the grain terminal yellowfin whiting and flathead have been caught. Squid, good-sized chopper tailor and a few skippy have been caught at Rockingham and Palm Beach jetties, while the Ammo Jetty and Woodman Point held scaly mackerel and a few herring. A few squid have been caught around the northern end of Point Peron.

These great fishing tips were provided by the friendly team at Compleat Angler & Camping World in Rockingham, so make sure you chat to their experienced crew in store and stock up before heading out!
Perth catches
Rottnest provided some top-quality billfish action last weekend during the 2024 @compleatanglernedlands Marlin Cup, with the dedicated crew from @sendnbend_sportfishing getting this cracker of a marlin to the side of the boat for a quick snap before safely releasing it. Great work lads!

Boats

There has been quite a bit of activity at the FADs with tuna and dolphinfish about in good numbers. A few Spanish mackerel have been landed and were providing some awesome aerial displays, along with plenty of sightings of wahoo. In the Rottnest Trench good numbers of blue marlin have been raised. A few yellowtail kingfish have come from Rottnest Island’s West End, while the wrecks out from Rottnest have offered arm-stretching Samsonfish. Rottnest has been one of the better King George whiting spots this week with Windmills producing KG's as well but in smaller sizes. Sand whiting have been plentiful in 10-15m depths between City Beach and Rottnest but squid seem to have shut up shop for now. When a bit of wave action was present at the offshore reefs at Mewstones and Stragglers they have produced decent tailor. Some nice King George whiting have been caught out from Hillarys, while Samsonfish and yellowtail kingfish have been encountered out from Ocean Reef. Drop netters, many in kayaks, have been catching blue swimmer crabs off South Beach and Coogee, while in the Swan River trolling for tailor has produced reasonable results. Drop netters in the Swan River have found blue swimmer crabs to be very much on the move this season and while they have been caught in a range of depths starting from 4m, the deeper pockets of the river at Blackwall Reach, Mosman and the old brewery have been the most consistent spots. Mulloway have been mainly landed at night in Mosman Bay and at Blackwall Reach. Most of Sunday and early on Monday should hold the flatter conditions over the coming days if you're thinking of punching out.

Shore-based

The moles, rock walls and beaches around Coogee have offered good numbers of chopper tailor at first and last light and mulloway at night. Herring have also been caught at the moles when burley was used. At South Beach and Bathers Beach blue swimmer crabs have been caught by divers wading out from shore. Tailor catches have also been good at Cottesloe and at Floreat, where herring and sand whiting have been among the bycatch. Tailor have been caught in the evenings at Hillarys and Mindarie, with bigger tailor generally seen further north, often with a few snook thrown in. Beaches around Yanchep have produced pink snapper and mulloway, mainly caught by drone fishers, along with decent tailor. With the warm water temperatures a few northern species have featured among the bycatch of land-based fishers including dart and longtom. Fremantle Harbour’s E-Shed held plenty of scaly mackerel but so far they have failed to attract mulloway. Among the scalies have been herring and tarwhine. Tailor have been in good numbers in the Swan River, with the mornings having proved most productive at Point Resolution and Applecross for anglers casting slices and stickbaits. In the evenings and at night the Narrows and Canning Bridge fished well for tailor. Bream have been in good numbers from the Causeway as far up river as Midland and they have been kept company by soapy mulloway. Heirisson Island, Ascot, Garratt Road Bridge, Bayswater and Guildford’s Fishmarket Reserve have been some of the better spots, while the Canning River, Canning Bridge and Mt Henry Bridge through to Shelley all fished well for bream. Those wading the Swan River flats for flathead and flounder have had to work a bit harder in recent weeks but the middle to lower reaches have been holding a few fish despite many of them being small. Lots of small tarwhine have been part of the bycatch while a couple of anglers fishing at Claremont last weekend came across a school of undersize pink snapper with the 25-30cm fish attacking their flathead lures with gusto. Yellowfin whiting catches in the lower Swan seem to have dropped off but the elusive giant herring were widespread and especially active at night anywhere between Alfred Cove and Maylands. Sunday looks best at this stage for the land-based fishers.

A big thanks to Anglers Fishing World in Fremantle for their great tips! These guys love their fishing just as much as we all do, so make sure you ask their super friendly team for advice and stock up before wetting a line off the land or boat!
