Pic of the Week!

Chris Tanti @_flow_fishing_ took Craig White from @evolutionfishing out on his boat this week off Exmouth for a deep drop and they managed to pull in some jumbo ruby's and greybands! This monster took the cake and Chris also managed to land a sailfish on 10kg gear!

Broome catches
Elizabeth Mccallum @lizzymc_5 managed to find this rather dark 80cm+ barra among the snags by tempting it out with a plastic in one of the local creeks. Looks like it's been hanging out in the billabong for a while!

Boats

Calmer conditions that mostly appeared in the afternoons enabled crews to head out wide where good catches of red emperor and coral trout have been reported. Roebuck Bay was also fishing well with tuna and the odd Spanish mackerel taken on the troll. Mud crabs have been in good numbers at Dampier and Crab Creek and at the Fingers. These locations have also offered blue-nosed salmon and a few threadfin salmon but barramundi continued to be rather elusive this week. A few tripletail have been reported around the moorings in Roebuck Bay but they have been taken in better numbers around floating structure at Banana Wells. Saturday afternoon and all of Sunday look amazing for the boaties on the forecast with minimal wind and swell but expect it to be rough outside of those windows this week with higher winds set to arrive from Monday.

Shore-based

Town Beach Jetty has offered small queenfish and trevally, along with bream and javelinfish, while trevally and queenfish have been the main fare at the Port Jetty and Entrance Point. The beach at Entrance Point has fished well for whiting as did Cable Beach at times. Bluebone have been caught from the rocks at James Price Point and also at Gantheaume Point. Willie and Barred Creek have held queenfish. In the Fitzroy River barramundi have been very hit and miss and it's taken a while to find them, but soft plastics worked around the structure seemed to work best this week.

Big thanks to the crew from Tackle World Broome for their tips! Make sure you pay them a visit for the best gear and advice for your next fishing trip.
Exmouth catches
Winderabandi Point off Exmouth was red hot for wahoo this past week and this great catch was uploaded to the @aussiechicksfishing page, give it a follow!

Boats

Billfish activity on the west side has slowed but dolphinfish have been in reasonable numbers. Tuna catches have been down though and only the odd couple were caught this week, but the Muirons seemed to produce most of them. Bottom fishers found red emperor in 80-100m depths but it pays to move around to avoid the sharks, while further out to 300m depths cod, ruby snapper, pearl perch and goldband snapper have been caught. The reefs closer in on the western side have produced a few Spanish mackerel, with a 21kg model landed on a surf ski this week. Red-throat emperor and small Rankin cod have been caught by those targeting bottom species close in. Coral trout and Rankin cod have been pulled up from the lumps around the Muirons with the odd cobia also reported. In Exmouth Gulf the shoals have offered coral trout, golden trevally and broad-barred Spanish mackerel. Modest hauls of squid have come from the shallows in the Gulf this week. Very early on Saturday looks best at this stage for the boats but outside of that looks a tad rough, with the swell picking up along with the wind for a few days from Sunday onwards.

There are some epic prizes up for grabs in this competition which runs for four months! Get your entries in now by clicking here!

Shore-based

Bundegi has been fishing very well for big queenfish and a 15kg Spanish mackerel was taken from the jetty there this week. At Learmonth Jetty schools of tuna have been almost within casting range, while squid, bream, whiting and mangrove jack have also been caught there in reasonable numbers. Bream, trevally and small cod have been the main fare from the town marina and squid have been caught from its ocean-side wall and also from the rocks at the light industrial area. The tip of the Cape has been quiet but it does offer shelter from the south-easterly winds and is always worth a crack for spangled emperor and bluebone. Wapet Creek also offers wind protection and often produces decent bream and mangrove jack. Tantabiddi is another option when the easterlies blow and has produced spangled emperor, bream and mangrove jack.

These great tips were courtesy of the friendly team at Tackle World Exmouth. Swing by their store for the best advice and gear ahead of your next trip!

Kalbarri catches

Boats

Apart from the weather this morning providing a decent window, it's been slow going for the boaties this week. The rough weather is likely to have broken up bait schools and slowed pelagic action but with another decent weather window expected in a few days on around Tuesday and Wednesday it may be worth having a troll on the Three-Mile Reef if the water is clear, or targeting pink snapper from the lumps. Baldchin groper are another species that comes in close when the weather is nasty and both pinkies and baldies could be worth a try along the cliffs.

Shore-based

Big swells and dirty water have been a challenge but there have been reports of mulloway activity at the mouth of the Murchison River. Chinamans is also worth a try for big tailor when the swell is up. When the swells ease, Red Bluff could produce big tailor and pink snapper and if it is safe, the cliffs could offer baldchin groper and pink snapper but make sure you do his with a friend, wear a lifejacket and tether yourself to the rocks. The river itself is quite clear and has fished well for yellowfin whiting from the foreshore, with bream and cod landed from the marina jetty and further up river. When dirty water starts to flow mulloway will be worth targeting in the river.

Shout out to Dean from Kalbarri Sports and Dive for his tips! Feel free to venture into his store to ask for advice if you're wetting a line around Kalbarri!
Geraldton catches

Boats

Most boats have been kept on trailers and are unlikely to get much use over the next week. If a weather window arises dirty water is likely to hamper squid chasers at Point Moore and Separation Point but if the swell and wind drop enough for bigger boats to head out, the blow could stir up pink snapper and baldchin groper. Keep an eye on the dirty water around the reefy areas and use burley to get them excited. Tuesday should hold the calmest easterly winds but the swell will still be quite high.

Shore-based

Weed and tidal surges have put a line through most fishing activity this week. Just before the rough weather arrived a decent mulloway was landed north of Dongara. Near the Hutt River some decent tailor were plucked from the big swells that were rolling through but the local beaches have been barren of catches. The town's rockwalls have offered meagre hauls of small whiting and loads of undersized pickers. Batavia Coast Marina should offer a bit of shelter and could be worth trying for bread-and-butter species and maybe a squid or two if the water is not too dirty.

Thanks to the team at Geraldton Sports Centre for their tips! They will happily provide you with great gear and the solid advice for your next fishing trip.
Lancelin catches

Boats

Nothing to report this week, with the weather and tides shutting down the opportunities and big swells making it virtually impossible to launch. There were even some pictures that showing a couple of professional lobster fishers getting caught out with the big tides and found their cars buried on return to the beach! If you thought the swells were big this week wait until you see what's rolling through this weekend, with 5m swells set to come crashing in. The only day that might allow lines to get wet is Tuesday but even then it would be best to go land-based.

Shore-based

Beach fishing hasn’t been any easier as waves have been pushing through to the back dunes on the high tide and plenty of seaweed has been in the wash. The safest bet to get a line out has been the town jetty where tailor and herring have been the main catch in the evenings, just make sure you rock a poncho! Tuesday should see calmer winds with a 2m swell but these rougher conditions will stick around all week.

A big Recfishwest thanks to Peter Fullarton for his tips on what's biting around Lancelin each week! If you want Peter to put you on to the fish directly, make sure you check out his Tailored Treks Tours page. Always a great time and Peter knows the best spots around Lancelin like the back of his hand.

Esperance catches
How's this for a cracker of a tailor caught by Jarek Smithson this week off one of the stunning beaches near Esperance. Can't wipe the smile from his face!

Boats

Before the weather set in good dhufish, pink snapper and Samsonfish were caught at Butty Head, while big nannygai and breaksea cod came from Figure of Eight and Boxer islands. Big Samsonfish have been caught out towards Waterwitch, while there have been decent queen snapper at Observatory and Lion islands. Good numbers of skippy have come from Cooper Reef. In Esperance Bay pink jigs have been working well on squid, some with hoods that have measured 40cm. Big sand whiting have been caught in Wylie Bay and out from Fourth Beach and Twilight Beach, while Lovers Cove has produced big King George whiting and bull herring. It's looking pretty rough out there over the coming days but Wednesday is looking inviting for the boats at this stage.

Shore-based

Very big skippy up to 6kg have been caught in the bays at Cape Arid, while good mulloway have come from Thomas River and Poison Creek. Dunns Beach produced good-sized salmon and plenty of big skippy, while small gummy sharks have been caught at Stockyards. Out west the winter swells have thrown up some big tailor, with one going 70cm. Closer to town big squid have come from the town Jetty, while Taylor Street Jetty has offered garfish and skippy. Bandy Creek Boat Harbour held bream and King George whiting, while Blue Haven Beach has fished well for sand whiting.

Hats off to the very knowledgeable team at Southern Sports & Tackle for their tips! These guys love their fishing as well, so make sure you swing by their store for the best gear and advice before wetting a line around Esperance.

Great Southern catches
Chris Dixon @dixonsfishing reckons of all the great fish he catches, yellowtail kingies would have to be the most addictive to battle. If you are thinking of going into battle against these hard-fighting pelagics off the rocks, make sure you do as Chris does and always wear a lifejacket, fish with a mate, wear the right footwear, tether yourself to the rocks and analyse the conditions on arrival.

Boats

The region’s extended run of ideal conditions has come to an abrupt end, forcing the postponement of the Southern Squid Spectacular, while 3m+ swells and strong winds have ruled out any offshore activity. Before the blow the usual reef species were caught on the coral grounds with tuna, salmon and yellowtail kingfish all active around the islands. King George Sound offered herring, King George whiting and squid. If weather windows do arise squidding is likely to be very slow because of the poor water quality. Tuesday might hold the next opportunity for the boats with a 2m swell and minimal wind albeit with a touch of rain.

Shore-based

Thumping swells have washed away many beaches this week and salmon schools are likely to have become scattered. Salmon had been on the chew at Lowlands, Nanarup, Shelley Beach, Sand Patch and Cheynes and also at Parry Beach, along with Denmark’s Ocean Beach and at Windy Harbour. Last week when the swells were down good catches came from local rock platforms, including blue groper, breaksea cod, big skippy, pink snapper and harlequin fish but the rocks are likely to be unfishable and unsafe for some time so stick to the beaches. Shore fishers unfortunately face limited options this week as well but the best bets could be sheltered areas such as Emu Point and the town marina which should offer herring and small skippy. Other sheltered parts of Frenchman Bay and Whalers Cove could produce herring and the odd whiting but squid fishing is likely to be poor. With plenty of water flowing, the King and Kalgan rivers could be an option for bream fishers and mulloway could be a chance. Bream are also likely to be active in Oyster Harbour.

Cheers to the Trailblazers Albany crew for their tips this week! Swing by their store if you're after some top gear and advice ahead of your next fishing trip. Remember, you'll also catch just as many fish off the beaches than the rocks and it is always much safer to go with this option on the south coast.

South-West catches
@jordan_m_a_t_h_e_w_s caught something a little different during a recent fishing trip off Bunbury this week - just goes to show the new @vexedfishing albino colour appeals to a lot of delicious critters!

Boats

The big surprise this week has been the huge number of cuttlefish that have been caught from Bunbury all the way down to Geographe Bay. They have been caught on the shallow squid grounds and caught further out on the drift by snapper chasers and even further out by crews bottom bashing for dhufish. Pink snapper have been the main catch this week in 10-15m depths on both sides of town and in Geographe Bay with the odd dhufish among them. Good dhufish have been landed in 40m out from Abbey Beach as well and at the Four-Mile Reef tuna were active. Before the blow Geographe Bay offered King George whiting and sand whiting. Deeper parts of Bunbury’s outer harbour have held big blue swimmer crabs. It's going to be windy and stormy this weekend with lightning so it would be best to avoid taking the boats out until at least Tuesday when it should calm down.

Shore-based

Daniel Liuto @dansfishin_southwest has been on fire recently off the Busselton jetty, with persistence paying off nicely after landing these two solid fish. You're always in for a good chance of catching mulloway or pinkies off this landmark, especially after a big storm.

Pink snapper catches have been excellent from Preston Beach all the way down to Augusta with both drone fishers and casters getting in on the action. Big swells will rule out a lot of locations this weekend but beaches that offer a bit of protection should still produce good pinkies. Salmon have been picked up in Geographe Bay, at Bunbury’s Back Beach and at Myalup and Binningup. Random schools have been passing through for lure casters and the odd one has been caught on bait as well. Salmon catches have been more consistent at Smiths Beach, Bunker Bay, Eagle Bay and Gas Bay at Margaret River, and from Augusta to Yeagerup. A couple of dhufish have been caught from the shore at Yallingup. Herring have been in big numbers at most beaches and yellow-eye mullet have been active in Geographe Bay, Forrest Beach and Dalyellup. There have been rumours of pink snapper catches at the Bunbury Cut and herring, juvenile salmon and skippy have been caught there. Bream have been worth chasing in the Collie River and also in the Capel River and at Wonnerup. Busselton Jetty has been the mulloway hotspot this week but given the stormy conditions, it should once again produce both mulloway and pinkies (as pictured above).

Big cheers to Whitey's Tackle & Camping for their top fishing tips as always! If you're in Australind or Bunbury and are keen to wet a line throughout our South-West make sure you ask their very friendly team who love their fishing for advice and stock up on gear at their store. If you're in Busselton, the 2 Oceans Tackle team are also incredibly helpful.

Declan Busher @southwest-freshwater and his pal @blairhutton_fishing had a cracker of a session on redfin perch this week, finding 29 of the tasty species with most sitting around the 35-40cm mark. They have taken a good spike in numbers after schooling to spawn and snagless hooks work brilliantly for plucking them out of the snags. Remember there is no size or bag limit for these 5-star quality eating fish!
Both Wellington and Harvey Dam and the Collie River have all started to produce some thumping redfin, with some fish apparently approaching 50cm. If you manage to catch one that's cracked 50cm, make sure you send in a snap of it because we won't believe it until we see it and you'll likely take out pic of the week! With the influx of nutrients from the rain, trout should be active in the feeder creeks around the dams and at Honeymoon Pool and the Gelcoat Rapids in the Collie River. Once the rains start to settle in, these rapids will be hotspots for trout which have been hanging out for oxygenated water full of nutrients following months of hot and dry weather, so make sure you get out there.
Mandurah and surrounds
Kade took out the weekly $50 @tackle_world_miami voucher this week for this solid 94cm land-based pinkie landed off one of the local beaches! Make sure you submit your catches to the team each week for a chance at the weekly prize!

Mandurah

Boats: The blow should be a trigger for pink snapper activity at Five-Fathom Bank, which up to now has been offering plenty of chunky skippy. Very warm water temperatures have encouraged pelagic chasers in depths of 40-100m who have found plenty of tuna and have been bitten off by Spanish mackerel and wahoo. Trolled deep-diving lures such as Strada Pros, Halco Laser Pros, Rapalas and Nomad DTX minnows have attracted the bigger pelagics, but don’t forget to rig it with wire trace. Good feeds of sand whiting have come from inside Five-Fathom, while the rough weather should bring King George whiting into 5-10m depths, especially around Dawesville. Not very far out from Dawesville small dhufish have been caught along with pink snapper in 10-20m depths. When clear pockets can be found, big herring, chopper tailor, juvenile salmon and skippy have been caught in the estuary. Tuesday is the next best day for the boats as the next few days is looking rough with very big swells.

Land-based: Pink snapper catches have been very good from the ocean end of the Dawesville Cut and a few were caught at Tims Thicket and White Hills when the weed wasn't a problem. Big winter tailor have also turned up at these locations and have been caught in ones and twos. The odd salmon has been landed at White Hills, Tims Thicket and the Dawesville Cut but the most consistent spot this week for salmon has been Avalon Beach. Herring and juvenile salmon have been in good numbers at the Mandurah bridges and along the Dawesville Cut, while the rockwall guarded by the Seba’s Song Giant has fished very well for juvenile salmon but stay mindful on the 30cm size limit. With dirty water starting to flow the bream in the estuary have become less finnicky and they have been aggressive on almost anything thrown their way.

Thinking of wetting a line around Mandurah? These great tips were courtesy of the super friendly and helpful team at Tackle World Miami so make sure you swing by their store for the best tips and gear before your next fishing trip!

SECRET HARBOUR / PORT KENNEDY / ROCKINGHAM / SAFETY BAY / WARNBRO SOUND

Boats: Cockburn Sound has been full of scaly mackerel which have brought in big mulloway, with some excellent catches mostly appearing at night. Mulloway have still been in Cockburn Sound which still seems to be the better bet, especially considering it has also held plenty of pink snapper. Dirty water often shuts down squidding, but the rough weather stirs up worms and small crustaceans over broken ground, often leading to good King George whiting catches in Mangles Bay and inshore of Garden Island. The Sound might offer shelter from these big swells but Tuesday looks best for the boats this week.

Good things come to those who wait! @kholeon.sratana sat through a lot of storms recently and was belted by heavy winds and rain but it paid off at Rockingham Jetty with this 117cm silver slab being landed on 30lb gear, nice work!

Land-based: Secret Harbour has been the pick of the beaches for pink snapper with several landed this week. No reports for snapper from other locations came in this week, but it certainly would be worth targeting snapper at Long Point, the Ammo Jetty, Woodman Point and Rockingham and Palm Beach jetties over the coming days. All these locations should hold herring and a few chopper tailor and small salmon were active at Rockingham and Palm Beach jetties earlier this week. Long Point and the Penguin Island spit have produced whiting over the past week.

These great fishing tips were provided by the friendly team at Compleat Angler & Camping World in Rockingham, so make sure you chat to their experienced crew in store and stock up before heading out!
Perth catches
It's not often you see shark mackerel turning up off Perth! Rottnest produced the goods for these speedsters with @levi_de_boni and his pal Anthony from @sendnbend_sportfishing taking a quick snap before releasing them. They can often smell strongly of ammonia, but aren't bad on the chew. Just not quite as good as their Spanish cousins.

Boats

Before the weather turned gnarly demersal fishers were enjoying excellent catches of pink snapper, baldchin groper and dhufish around Rottnest and at Direction Bank. Around Parker Point at Rottnest was a hotspot for pink snapper with the burley trails also attracting big numbers of skippy up to a kilo. Decent tuna showed up at the island’s West End as well. They were seen jumping and several were landed on a trolled Halco Laser Pro, with chunky southern bluefin and yellowfin doing the rounds. Massive King George whiting up to 70cm have come from Rottnest around the lumps, while most metro reef systems such as Mewstones and Stragglers have been holding tailor around the 50cm mark and yellowtail kingfish. Good skippy, a few pink snapper and Samsonfish have been caught along Three-Mile Reef. Sand whiting were in good numbers inshore from Fremantle and out from City Beach. Forget taking the boat out over the coming days as the swell is going to be mighty along with the winds but Tuesday could hold better conditions.

Shore-based

Thanks to these stormy conditions pink snapper have been in huge numbers along the entire length of North Mole, from the service station right to the tip, with dozens of fish up to 90cm being caught along with a couple of big mulloway. Herring have also been in big numbers at North Mole and yellow-eye mullet are expected to show up. North Mole was not the only hotspot this week with pink snapper being landed at South Mole and the Hillarys, Ocean Reef, Mindarie and Two Rocks rockwalls, as well as Alkimos Beach. Before the blow it was mainly drone fishers who took the pink snapper spoils, mostly from northern beaches, but now the snapper are just metres from the rocks so long casts are not necessary. Expect big tailor to show up after the blow, especially around Cottesloe, Swanbourne, Trigg and Yanchep. Last weekend good tailor came from the Cottesloe to Scarborough Beach stretch, with Floreat Beach fishing well for tailor in the mornings with herring and skippy among the bycatch. Squidding is likely to be quiet for a week or so but before the cold fronts came through they were in reasonable numbers at both moles. At South Mole and the South Fremantle rockwalls some nice sand whiting were caught. In the Swan River decent rainfall has pushed bream and soapy mulloway into the middle sections of the system. Spots worth trying for bream include Garratt Road Bridge, Gloucester Park, Burswood, Heirisson Island, Canning Bridge and the Narrows. Mulloway chasers have had success mainly on school-sized fish, although a big mulloway was landed at the Narrows this week. Schoolies came from Canning Bridge and Mosman. Big schools of mullet have been in the river and mulloway have been following them. Also worth a shot is Fremantle Harbour where big schools of scaly mackerel are holed up along with a few herring, which could bring in big mulloway. Herring have been caught in the Swan River in good numbers as far up as Point Walter but tailor catches have tapered off. Silver bream and juvenile Samsonfish were caught at the Fremantle bridges last weekend. The odd flounder has been among the bycatch for mulloway chasers in the Swan’s lower reaches, while some big flathead were hooked behind Optus Stadium last weekend and medium-sized models came from the Shelley area in the Canning River. Expect flathead to move in the deeper sections of the lower reaches of the river over the next few weeks.

A big thanks to Anglers Fishing World in Fremantle for their great tips! These guys love their fishing just as much as we all do, so make sure you ask their super friendly team for advice and stock up before wetting a line off the land or boat!
