Fishing Lure

Big flathead and nice skippy have been caught at 10-Mile Lagoon, while salmon and big skippy have been active at 11-Mile Beach. At 14-Mile Beach gummy sharks and big skippy have been landed, while Dunns Beach has held good numbers of big salmon. Good sand whiting have come from Lucky Bay and the flat rock there has produced squid. Bandy Creek Boat Harbour has fished well for King George whiting, while flathead and King George whiting have been caught from the town foreshore. Bull herring have been in good numbers at Taylor Street Jetty, while the Town Jetty has fished well in the afternoons for squid. Bream fishing at the lakes has slowed a little with the rising water levels but fish to 35cm have been caught at Wheatfield Lake.

The salmon season does seem to be over but resident fish have been popping up at Cheynes, Sand Patch and Nanarup, and decent catches have come from Bremer Bay. Herring, tarwhine, flathead and bream have been caught near the creek mouths along Cheynes and at Nanarup. Around town squid chasers braving the wind and cold have found a few at the town marina, Emu Point and Frenchman Bay. These locations have also offered a few herring, small skippy and whiting. Small bream have been hanging around the mouths of the King and Kalgan rivers.

The Swan River has thrown up some interesting catches this week. Big ocean-going tailor around the 50cm mark have been caught at night on large soft plastics and stickbaits under the lights at Canning Bridge, which suggests they could be at other locations such as the Narrows, Claremont Jetty and the water police jetty in North Fremantle. In the lower reaches, pink snapper either side of 50cm have been active, a step up from the 25-30cm models often caught in the river in late summer. Flathead seem to be widespread as well. Small flatties have been caught around Belmont and in the Canning River near Shelley, but better fish have come from the Swan’s middle reaches with a 60cm model caught and released in the lower Swan. One pair of anglers fishing around the Dome Cafe in East Fremantle spooked two flatties around the 50cm mark that were sitting just a metre or so from the water’s edge. What is normally the dominate species in the Swan this time of year, black bream, have been hard to find. Conventional wisdom suggests they should be well downriver by now, hanging about the yacht clubs, but catches have been reported up river at Ascot and Maylands. Targeting structure has been productive for bream chasers. In the ocean, North Mole is still fishing well for pink snapper and a few have been landed at Cottesloe Groyne and from the northern beaches, where drone fishers targeting pinks have also landed the odd mulloway. Chopper tailor, herring and skippy have been caught at Swanbourne and City Beach and it could be worth gearing up for bigger tailor at Cottesloe, Leighton and Trigg. Both the North and South Mole have been holding plenty of herring, and squid catches have also been good with North Mole having the edge. The Fremantle marinas and Fishing Boat Harbour could be worth a try for small Samsonfish, skippy, tarwhine, bream and herring, along with squid.
