Pic of the Week!

Anyone keen to take a guess at the weight of this monster tailor? This great snap uploaded to the W.A LANDBASED FISHING CLUB Facebook page by Shane Trebley shows a family on the south coast holding a tailor that would easily prey on chopper tailor.

West coast demersal closure until 29 March - recfishers leading the way in giving spawning dhufish a break
Click on the image above to hear from Recfishwest's Matt Gillett on how to change your tactics and fish for other great species during the demersal closure.

A reminder to all in the region - as of 1 February, the west coast demersal fishery between Kalbarri and Augusta will be closed until Good Friday on 29 March to recfishers.

We advocated for this late summer closure to protect dhufish during their peak spawning period. This allows the fish to top up the stock and speed up the recovery.

Protecting spawning fish makes sense and is the right thing to do. Unfortunately, the closure does not apply across all sectors and we believe it should.

In good news though, the Government took on board our call for the fishery to reopen coinciding with Easter. This means fishing mums, dads and kids will be able to get out and catch a bottom fish for Easter dinner on Good Friday on 29 March.

In the meantime, there's plenty of other great fishing options to try. Click here for more info.

Broome catches
A beasty 113cm barra for @j3llis following a recent trip wetting a line in Broome's floodwaters. Notice the big catfish spike in its gill plate. This tough specimen has obviously been in other battles during its lifetime!

Boats

Strong winds and unfavourable tides have made fishing hard going this week, ruling out most of Roebuck Bay. Crab Creek has been the best bet however and produced the goods despite the conditions, where the odd decent barramundi has been caught on live baits. The floodwaters around town have also produced some big barra over the metre mark on stickbaits and live baits. Crab Creek also held reasonable numbers of mud crabs with most of them brimming with meat. The westerly winds and swell are picking up over the next few days which will make it rough out on the water, with Tuesday and Wednesday looking a little calmer.

Shore-based

This mangrove jack landed by @coitoutdoors in the Kimberley region shows these aggressive fish will still lurk around snags even in relatively shallow waters.

A few small queenfish and golden trevally have been caught at Town Beach Jetty, while queenfish have also been caught at the Port Jetty where a few barramundi have also been spotted hanging around the pylons. Reports of bigger queenfish have come from Entrance Point, with fish over 90cm turning up in decent numbers. Willie Creek has been the best of the creeks this past week, offering mangrove jack, trevally and the odd small barramundi. Fast-flowing dirty water has shut down the great run of barramundi fishing in the Fitzroy River unfortunately.

Big thanks to the crew from Tackle World Broome for their tips! Make sure you pay them a visit for the best gear and advice for your next fishing trip.
Exmouth catches
Plenty of sashimi to go around from this lovely yellowfin tuna! Cal landed this healthy fish and there have been plenty of schools spotted this week off Exmouth aboard @innkeepersportfishing even in the choppy conditions.

Boats

On the west side spangled emperor have been caught in depths from 10m out to the 60-80m mark where they have been joined by goldband snapper. A few black marlin and sailfish have been landed with most of the sailfish being picked up around the 50m depth mark, while the blacks have been raised out to 150m depths. Fishing has been quiet at the Muiron Islands with spangled emperor, Charlie Court and a few coral trout the main catches. In the Gulf, school mackerel have been in big numbers and on the shoals, spangled emperor, blue-lined emperor and golden trevally have been in reasonable numbers, while spearfishers have done well on coral trout. The shallow weed beds out from the marina have been holding a few squid. The stronger south-westerly winds and rising swell will make it rough on the water this weekend so maybe find a more sheltered area until it backs off from Tuesday.

Shore-based

@indepthangler_josh usually travels thousands of kilometres to catch bonefish in the shallows but there are plenty of these all around in our own backyard. They put up an awesome fight.

Flyfishers came across good numbers of bonefish at Tantabiddi this week but they were very skittish and uninterested in any of the offerings cast in their direction. Other species at Tantabiddi have been more forthcoming with dart, spangled emperor and giant trevally caught in good numbers. At Bundegi and Learmonth, solid 4-5kg queenfish have been smashing up baitfish schools, while both Learmonth Jetty and the Bundegi boat ramp have held good numbers of mangrove jack. Impressive whiting have been caught towards the Bay of Rest and at the mouth of Wapet Creek on the incoming tide. At low tide in Wapet Creek, mud crabs have also been hooked out of the holes. In the town marina, mangrove jack sizes have improved and the jacks have been swimming with cod, small trevally and queenfish. The odd squid was caught from the marina’s ocean-side wall. Spangled emperor have been the main catch at the Mildura Wreck once again especially when it's been a bit choppy, while the stretch from the navy pier to VLF Bay produced queenfish and giant trevally.

These great tips were courtesy of the friendly team at Tackle World Exmouth. Swing by their store for the best advice and gear ahead of your next trip!

Kalbarri catches

Boats

Spanish mackerel and tuna have been red hot all around town, providing plenty of entertainment for boats on the troll. They have been caught north, south and west of town, close in along the cliffs and in cleaner water of 20-30m depths. Red Bluff, Sand Patch and Jakes have been some of the better spots. With hordes of baitfish around, tuna have been caught mostly on slices cast into bust-ups, while trolling Halco Laser Pros and similar lures has worked best on Spanish mackerel. Unfortunately this morning saw the last of the good weather for a while, with some raging southerly winds and big swells roaring through over the next week.

Shore-based

Tailor have been in good numbers with some bigger models coming from the river mouth, while a 60cm specimen turned up on a popper at Chinaman’s. Red Bluff and Wittecarra have been reliable for chopper tailor in the mornings and on still evenings, and good numbers of dart have been among the choppers. In the Murchison River, decent size blue swimmer crabs have been caught as far up as the marina, while mud crabs have moved a fair way up river as far up as Paradise Flats. Mangrove jack have been caught around the marina along with cod and a few javelin fish. Bream were landed from the marina as far up as Castle Rock. Yellowfin whiting have been caught at the Sand Spit and on the other side of the river. Chopper tailor have been active at the marina in the evenings. You'll need to find a sheltered spot over the coming week though as the southerly wind and swell is looking treacherous.

Shout to to Dean from Kalbarri Sports and Dive for his tips! Feel free to venture into his store to ask for advice if you're wetting a line around Kalbarri!
Geraldton catches

Boats

Boaties have had to work hard for a feed, but good catches have been reported for those willing to put in the hours and kilometres. Dinghy anglers close in have targeted squid but squid numbers have dropped off, with the only reported catches coming for those getting their squid jigs right down close to the weed patches on the drift and working them aggressively. If sheltered areas can be found it may be worth dropping a net or two for blue swimmer crabs as they have been spotted in decent numbers by small boats. Plenty of boats have been heading far and wide chasing pelagics but the catches were limited this week and given the nasty looking winds and swell taking a big spike over the next week, the door for getting out has all but been slammed shut.

Shore-based

It was land-based fishing to the rescue this week and some of the better fishing has been close to town. The groynes on the front beach near Dome Cafe have been consistent for herring and smaller whiting, plus a few chopper tailor in the evenings. At the groyne closest to the port, some schoolkids had a ball this week catching bonito on lures. The rocks behind the Geraldton Fishermen’s Harbour have held decent tailor up to 40cm and whiting in good numbers. At Coronations, tailor in the 45-60cm range have been caught during a very small bite time in the evenings but weed has been a problem. The Batavia Coast marina could be worth a shot for blue swimmer crabs, while at Dongara plenty of people have been dropping crab nets in the marina to good results, with the same area also producing pike, small tailor and reasonable bream. Brace yourselves for some rough conditions this week though, so today or very early tomorrow morning is your last window before the weather becomes pretty treacherous.

Thanks to the team at Geraldton Sports Centre for their tips! They will happily provide you with great gear and the solid advice for your next fishing trip.
Lancelin catches
The long weekend saw plenty of boats ducking out from Lancelin for a bottom fish before the demersal ban kicked in and @mark.j.mac landed this solid dhuie off one of the lumps. The February-March closure will crucially allow this important species to spawn and take a break.

Boats

Plenty of boats have been getting out over the past week and the best catches came from depths greater than 35m. Last weekend's competition at Lancelin Angling & Aquatic Club saw a monster 48.5kg bass groper weighed in. The 15-35m depths were hard to fish, with not much other than smaller fish reeled in, but inside the White Bank in depths lower than 15m held good numbers of snapper and dhufish. Now that the demersal season has ended until it reopens on 29 March, it might be time to break out the trolling gear with random schools of tuna throughout a range of depths and a few reports of Spanish mackerel shadowing the tuna. Inside the bay there have been plenty of herring. The sand patches in 5-6m depths both north and south of town have held some decent size sand whiting. Unfortunately the next best window for the boats is looking like Tuesday and Wednesday morning as the strong wind and swell is pretty relentless this weekend.

Shore-based

We finished January with an amazing run of pink snapper off the beach, especially by casting baits towards near shore reefs. Usually February is the best month of the year, so this bodes well for the coming weeks ahead. Drone fishers have pretty much been able to send baits out 150-300m offshore anywhere along the coast to find a few good pinkies, the key is to get those baits out early with most fish caught before 6.30am. Tailor have been best in the evenings with fish between 35-40cm dominating the catch. Most sessions also see a flathead or two snaffling a pilchard bait. The staple bread and butter species have been improving in numbers with better catches of herring and an increase in the size of whiting reported. Seaweed in the wash has been a problem throughout the week and the forecast this weekend with tedious winds and the swell increasing not likely to see any improvement.

A big Recfishwest thanks to Peter Fullarton for his tips on what's biting around Lancelin each week! If you want Peter to put you on to the fish directly, make sure you check out his Tailored Treks Tours page. Always a great time and Peter knows the best spots around Lancelin like the back of his hand.

THIS SATURDAY'S (3 FEBRUARY) ABALONE SESSION OFFICIALLY CANCELLED DUE TO UNSAFE CONDITIONS

DPIRD has officially cancelled this Saturday morning's scheduled abalone hour in the West Coast Zone due to rough conditions, following advice from Surf Life Saving WA

With strong winds and a rising swell forecast, it would not only make it too risky prowling the reefs, but the conditions would make it very difficult to spot abalone.

Due to this cancellation, a backup abalone day will be organised in March so recfishers don't lose a day for jumping in the drink to gather a feed of abs.

Make sure you pass this on to anyone who was planning on going fishing for abs this weekend and check in on our channels for the upcoming abalone forecasts on the remaining two days!

Esperance catches
@lachy_warren got back in the tinnie and landed this cracker of a blue groper off Esperance this week. This blue groper does resemble something that Shrek would cough up but they can vary between the bright blue colour and a more dark green.

Boats

Squid, herring and snook have been the main catches in Esperance Bay, while skippy, flathead and King George whiting have been caught at Lovers Cove. Big sand whiting have been caught in 10m depths at Wylie Bay and also at Lovers Cove, while pink snapper have come over the side at Pot Rocks and Douglas Patch. Nannygai have been in good numbers at Leg of Lamb, while Samsonfish have been caught at Giants. Tuna were active at Black Island and Woody Island, while Black Island has also fished well for big blue groper. Queen snapper to 8kg have been landed at Observatory and Lion islands. Saturday and Monday morning at this stage are looking quite pleasant for the boaties if you wish to duck out.

Shore-based

Munglinup has fished well for gummy sharks, while Whale Beach produced good salmon and skippy. Salmon have also been at Roses Beach and big schools have been been hanging around 10-Mile Lagoon. Herring and salmon have also come from Salmon Beach, while Alexander Bay held decent gummy sharks. Good King George whiting have been caught at the end of Taylor Street Jetty, while the Town Jetty held plenty of herring. Squid and big sand whiting have been caught at Rubbish Tips in moderate numbers. Impressive flathead have been caught at Wylie Bay, while Bandy Creek Boat Harbour offered King George whiting and flounder. Woody Lakes and Stokes Inlet have fished well for big bream, with some hitting the 45cm mark.

Hats off to the very knowledgeable team at Southern Sports & Tackle for their tips! These guys love their fishing as well, so make sure you swing by their store for the best gear and advice before wetting a line around Esperance.

Great Southern catches

Boats

The region enjoyed a couple of nice days this past week which allowed a few boats to get out to the coral grounds where they caught mainly pink and queen snapper. In King George Sound, boats fishing between Middleton Beach and Emu Point have done well on squid and whiting, while in Princess Royal Harbour blue swimmer crabs have been caught across a wide range of depths, with raw chicken mixed in with mulies tending to produce the most catches. The weather isn't looking too bad this weekend with a relatively low swell and moderate south-westerly winds. Monday morning is looking best at this stage.

Shore-based

Squdding has been good at Whalers Cove, Frenchman Bay, Emu Point and the Town Marina with these locations also offering herring and a few whiting. On the beaches, salmon have been caught at Salmon Holes and out at Muttonbird Beach. Bream activity in the King and Kalgan rivers have been subdued, but some good mulloway have been landed in the Kalgan River. At Denmark’s Wilson Inlet yellowfin whiting have been caught on surface lures, along with herring and a few King George whiting.

Cheers to the Trailblazers Albany crew for their tips this week! Swing by their store if you're after some top gear and advice ahead of your next fishing trip. Remember, you'll also catch just as many fish off the beaches than the rocks and it is always much safer to go with this option on the south coast.

South-West catches
Margaret River was producing some great demersal catches before the ban kicked off on 1 February and Jeremy Mole @southwest_oz landed this impressive pink snapper not too far offshore.

Boats

Tuna have been in good numbers either side of Bunbury, from 1-2km out all the way to the 40-50m depths fishing well. At the FADs, solid dolphinfish have been caught and this recent hot weather should have fired them up if you're keen to get up very early and get out there before the strong winds pick up in the afternoons over the coming days. Solid King George whiting have been caught off Binningup, while the 20-30m depths between the Four and Eight-Mile reefs saw very big sand whiting hit the deck. Squid catches have been on the slow side, but the 10m depths straight out from Busselton were among the better spots. In Bunbury, the Collie River, the estuary and the harbour have all fished well for blue swimmer crabs, while dinghy anglers targeting the drop-offs at these locations have also landed plenty of chopper tailor and a few herring. Blue swimmer crabs have also been caught off Wonnerup and Quindalup in depths of 2-8m. The mornings over the next four mornings or so are definitely your best bet if you're thinking of punching out.

Shore-based

The northern end of Preston Beach produced the most consistent tailor catches this week, especially close to reefs, and pink snapper and mulloway have been among the bycatch. Beaches closer to town offered mainly small chopper tailor, tarwhine and sand whiting. Small whiting and chopper tailor have been caught at the Bunbury Cut, while the Collie River has fished well for bream and soapy mulloway. At Back Beach people have been diving for blue swimmer crabs with great results. Yellowfin whiting catches in the Leschenault Inlet have slowed a fair bit with many fish having cruised out to sea, but one of the better beaches out of town for them has been Myalup. In the estuary at Bunbury, cobbler have been speared at night. Busselton Jetty has been quiet with sand whiting, herring and squid the main fare but no big catches reported towards the end. Beaches around Dunsborough have offered herring, tailor, sand and yellowfin whiting, while at Daylellup plenty of herring have been caught along with the odd chopper tailor and flounder.

Big cheers to Whitey's Tackle & Camping for their top fishing tips as always! If you're in Australind or Bunbury and are keen to wet a line throughout our South-West make sure you ask their very friendly team who love their fishing for advice and stock up on gear at their store. If you're in Busselton, the 2 Oceans Tackle team are also incredibly helpful.

The brown trout have been pretty elusive for fishers over the warmer summer months, unless your name is Simon Holland from @southernforests_angler. This skilled angler is the trout whisperer of the South-West.
Marron activity has slowed in places close to bigger population centres, but catches should improve with the moon on the wane. It pays to try your luck in areas off the beaten track. Harvey, Waroona and Wellington dams are still producing a few, but it has been hard work. Good catches have also been reported from Sue’s Bridge in the Blackwood and along the Collie river. Most of the waterways around the Pemberton region have been reliable for marron also. Trout and redfin perch catches have also slowed but solid redfin have been caught in the Collie river. Redfin chasers have found the going hard at Wellington and Harvey dams but the deeper sections of these dams have offered a few small fish, with kayakers doing well at times. Using micro jigs in the deeper sections usually produces the goods. In the Great Southern, hard-to-get-to locations have held good numbers of marron if you're willing to delicately work through the blackberry bushes!

There are still plenty of marron around and the window to catch them just like @outwildadventures did recently is still open until midday on 5 February!

Mandurah and surrounds
Evan Reynolds @ev_reynolds tested out the new crab cooker after a very successful day of crabbing around Mandurah, which seems to be the place to be if you want to take home some of the sweetest tasting seafood on earth.

Mandurah

Boats: The FADs have held dolphinfish but they have been easily spooked, so maybe try to switch over to live baits if possible as this seemed to work best over the past week or so. A few tuna have been out there as well, but most boaties have encountered bigger numbers on the way there and back. In fact, tuna have been in good numbers on the 40m line right along the Peel coast, so make sure you have lures out the back whenever you're moving around. A few King George whiting have been caught on the Five-Fathom Bank, but better KG's have come off Dawesville in 30m depths. Inside the Five-Fathom has fished well for sand whiting. The strong southerly winds will make it choppy out on the water over the coming days so try to find sheltered areas if heading out.

Land-based: Yellowfin whiting in the estuary have been active on hot days with vibes out-fishing surface lures and drawing more aggressive strikes. Good numbers of yellowfin whiting have also been caught on small prawn baits on beaches such as Melros and Falcon. Fishing has been quiet at the Dawesville Cut and the Mandurah traffic bridges, with little caught other than the odd herring and small tailor. In the estuary, fat and healthy tailor have been caught in good numbers along the drop-offs with most fish in the 35-40cm range. Herring have been keeping them company, with many caught on small Twisty lures. Crabbing in the estuary is getting better with scoops and drop netters finding bigger and better blue swimmer crabs throughout the system. The good run of bream and soapy mulloway in the Serpentine River also continued. Tailor have been patchy on the beaches, but decent fish have come from Tim’s Thicket and White Hills. Overall chopper tailor numbers have been better north of town at Silversand and San Remo.

Thinking of wetting a line around Mandurah? These great tips were courtesy of the super friendly and helpful team at Tackle World Miami so make sure you swing by their store for the best tips and gear before your next fishing trip!

SECRET HARBOUR / PORT KENNEDY / ROCKINGHAM / SAFETY BAY / WARNBRO SOUND

Around Rockingham has been firing for good catches of big reds in the pots and @mg_chatstar got in on the action during the recent long weekend.

Boats: With the demersal ban back in force from 1 February, the focus will turn to reliable staples such as King George and sand whiting, along with squid, yellowtail kingfish and Samsonfish. Mangles Bay, Safety Bay, Parmelia Bank and inside Five-Fathom Bank should fire for the squid and whiting species, but yellowtail kingfish and Samsonfish have been turning up occasionally around the inshore reefs and off the back of Garden Island. Elsewhere, Cockburn and Warnbro sounds have been reliable for squid, as has Garden Island, where boaties have been taking advantage of the easterly winds by starting out at 9m depths and drifting all the way in to 2m depths. Those chasing bigger fish have done well at the FADs by trolling skirts and catching solid dolphinfish and lots of small tuna. As has been the case at other FADs, the dolphinfish seem to be preferring live baits as this seems to get them more excited. If you're thinking of punching out in the boats over the coming days, the early mornings are your best bet before the strong southerly winds and swell picks up.

Land-based: Secret Harbour has fished very well for tailor and some solid school-sized mulloway, while Port Kennedy and Warnbro have produced fewer school mulloway but still plenty of tailor. Herring have been caught at these beaches as well, with a mix of small Twisty lures and baits under floats working well. Long Point offered good tailor and with the warmer water, flathead, flounder and yellowfin whiting have been caught there in good numbers as well. On hot days, beaches around the grain terminal have fished well for sand and yellowfin whiting, which have been taking small prawn and squid baits, as well as vibe lures. The Ammo Jetty and Woodman Point have been quiet, although they did hold lots of scaly mackerel and the odd small squid. Better squid have been caught from the rocks at Point Peron and off the Woodman Point jetty. Rockingham and Palm Beach jetties have also offered herring, whiting and the odd squid.

These great fishing tips were provided by the friendly team at Compleat Angler & Camping World in Rockingham, so make sure you chat to their experienced crew in store and stock up before heading out!
Perth catches
It just goes to show that the Spanish mackies are out there and not necessarily that far off the Metro coast! This solid 17kg Spaniard was landed by James Ancell from the @sendnbend_sportfishing crew on Wednesday afternoon and plenty of other mackies have been spotted off the Metro coast between Mandurah and Lancelin. Make sure you're trolling whenever you decide to move around.

Boats

Early birds at the FADS (especially on weekdays) have encountered plenty of of dolphinfish in the 5-6kg range. Live baits have been effective on them as this seems to get them more excited than trolling or flicking lures around. Tuna on the other hand have also been there in good numbers and they have been smashing metals and trolled Richter Jelly Babes. The West End of Rottnest has offered a few tuna, some good yellowtail kingfish and the odd Samsonfish. King George whiting fishing have also been productive around Rottnest and also at Three-Mile Reef. Samsonfish have been encountered out from Ocean Reef and Mindarie. Sand whiting have been the main catch at Windmills and they have also been fishing well off City Beach and Cottesloe in 7-20m depths, while offshore reefs such as Mewstones have offered good tailor. Squid catches have been best in deeper water this past week, with 9m depths out from South Fremantle among the better spots. Drop netters have found big blue swimmer crabs in 11-13m depths in the middle reaches of the Swan River, while trolling for chopper tailor in the afternoons has been productive in the river as well, especially when the chop has been up. Unfortunately the rough weather is spoiling the fishing party for this weekend with some strong winds and bigger swell forecast, your next comfortable window out on the water at this stage is expected around Tuesday and Wednesday morning.

Shore-based

Hats off to 15-year-old Charlie Azzopardi catching his first land-based pink snapper on a scaly mackerel from a beach north of Perth! If you're going to soak baits in the gutters for these specimens, make sure you get plenty of burley out beforehand.

DPIRD has officially cancelled this Saturday morning's (3 February) scheduled abalone hour in the West Coast Zone due to rough conditions, following advice from Surf Life Saving WA. With strong winds and a rising swell forecast, it would not only make it too risky prowling the reefs, but the conditions would make it very difficult to spot abalone. Due to this cancellation, a backup abalone day will be organised on 9 March so recfishers don't lose a day for jumping in the drink to gather a feed of abs. Keep an eye out for our forecasts!

The Metro beaches and rock walls have been fishing well for tailor. The Fremantle moles and rock walls as far down as Coogee have all produced chopper tailor, as did Cottesloe and Swanbourne's beaches. Herring have been joining the chopper tailor at Floreat and City Beach, especially in the mornings, while Quinns Beach and Yanchep have fished well for tailor as well. Northern beaches have also produced pink snapper and even a couple of small dhufish. Herring were also at both moles and South Mole has fished best for squid, although the sizes have been small. The pens and walls around the Freo Fishing Boat Harbour have produced bream, which have shown a liking for mico jigs. Fremantle Harbour has also held plenty of skittish scaly mackerel but there have been no reports of mulloway in the harbour. In the Swan River, chopper tailor were widespread as far up river as the Causeway thanks to the choppy conditions. Better spots have been Canning Bridge, Claremont, Point Walter and the Narrows. Flathead fishing was hard work last weekend with the very low morning tides sending the flatties into deeper water and most anglers did better in the afternoons. Catches have been steady rather than spectacular on the sand and the deep drop-offs have fished better, especially for those using micro jigs or vibes. Decent flathead have also been caught up river, with one 53cm model caught and released near Guildford last week which is the right thing to do as any flathead over 40cm tend to be breeders. Flatties have also been active in the Canning River around the Mt Henry Bridge. Yellowfin whiting have been hitting Eco Gear ZX and TT SwitchPrawn vibes around East Fremantle in the early mornings and late afternoons, while most of the mulloway caught in the river this week have been soapies, coming from Bayswater, the Narrows, Mosman Park, Canning Bridge and the Causeway. Bream catches have been steady in the Canning River around the Mt Henry Bridge and Shelley, both on the flats and drop-offs, while better spots for bream in the Swan River have included Burswood, Ascot and Guildford. You'll want to be casting in a northerly direction if fishing off the land this weekend, the southerly wind is going to be a howler.

A big thanks to Anglers Fishing World in Fremantle for their great tips! These guys love their fishing just as much as we all do, so make sure you ask their super friendly team for advice and stock up before wetting a line off the land or boat!
