Deschutes Red Side Trout Report:

Fishing for redside trout overall is good. Best time is midday. Fish riffles, deep runs below riffles, and back eddies. During the month of May, you should be fishing a wide variety of patterns and sizes. This will bring you more success because it is one of the best months for not just stone flies, but for may flies and caddis. They get over looked a lot because everyone is so pressed to catch trout on stone flies.

Mayfly hatches are BWO’s, 18’s Mahogany Duns 16’s and Pale Evening Duns 14’s. Caddis are hatching in fair numbers, particularly around 1 to 4pm. Make sure you’re fishing sizes 16’s to 20’s. in any stage. Larva, pupa and adult.
Stone Fly Hatch is progressing nicely. More adults are out and about. Fish are starting to take the dries. Still plenty of nymphs are crawling out so keep using the nymphs in fast water with lots of structure close to the bank. Black, brown or gold, size 8’s and 10’s.

My fly shop is open for business and I will do my best to continue providing you with as much customer service as possible. I will have limited store hours, Tuesday through Saturday 8am to 5pm. I will maintain social distancing protocols for everyones protection.

I will also provide “ curbside “ service, whereas if you call ahead of time and you would like me to put together an order of flies, leaders, tippet, etc,… I can have the items ready for you before you arrive, then I can bring the order out to your vehicle and handle the transaction while you wait in the comfort of your car or truck.

If I’m closed, and you need gear, please call the number displayed in the fly shop window (541) 395-2565. I will drive down (a couple of minutes), and open for you.

ODFW and BLM are shooting for opening the Deschutes river corridor to camping and boating may 20th. Currently the river is open for fishing to Oregon residents only. Hoping this changes very soon.

Thank you for your understanding and patience. Again, I will do whatever I can to provide you with the best customer service I can given the current circumstances.

Stay away from me,
