Hatteras Fishing Report for May 27 - 28

We decided to make a couple of passes around the grass and were leaving the area when we saw a white marlin come up and hit the blue and white Bluewater Candy Jag off the short line on the corner. After a 45 minute fight, and many acrobatic jumps out of the water, we finally landed the fish. It was 62 inches long (72 inches including the bill).

We also picked up 3 blackfin tuna on a green and orange cedar plug daisy chain with squid body stinger. All were pretty small. We also picked up 3 more mahi mahi on blue and white Jags and Islanders.

On Saturday we decided to go north toward Diamond Tower. We were a couple of miles Southeast of the tower and picked up our biggest mahi mahi of the trip. Once again it was in 74 degree and 220 feet of water. Blue and pink Jags and Eye Catcher Outlaws were the bait of choice. We ended up picking a total of 7 mahi mahi, in the area, with all but one being on blue and pink lures and the one on blue and white. A storm off Ocracoke with 33 knot winds and lightening made us head for shore early, but our fish box was full, so there were no complaints.

We fished Sunday, but had a hard time finding the fish. The grass was more scattered and we had a few bites, and only caught a small mahi mahi a few miles north of Diamond Tower. All bites were on blue and pink lures.

We decided to go check out Diamond Tower. There were about 5 boats fishing around it, so there was a lot of pressure on the fish. We could see plenty of Amberjacks and King Mackeral in the water, but none seemed interested in our offerings. We called it a day early and headed back.

Even though Sunday was slow, it was a great trip and I caught my first white marlin. We ended up with a 72 quart cooler full of meat, so everyone was happy. Looking forward to the next trip!
