Block Island, named after the Dutch explorer Adriaen Block in 1614, is an island off the state of Rhode Island. During the end of the last ice age, receding glaciers formed this island. Block Island fishing has a long history here, beginning with the Niantic people fishing for sustenance. Two historic lighthouses are on the island, both Block Island North Light and Block Island Southeast Light guide ships away from the rocky coastline. With lots of rocky bottom, reefs, and shipwrecks around the area, Block Island fishing is worth checking out.
Bodies of water you can fish from Block Island include the Block Island Sound, the Atlantic Ocean and the Great Salt Pond. Block Island fishing from the shore delivers bluefish, Cod, Cunner, Mackerel, Spiny Dogfish, Striped Bass and Flounder. Fly fishing and surfcasting are popular activities on the sandy beaches and along the rocky coastline. Offshore, you will find opportunities to catch Black Sea Bass, Tautog, and Sharks, Tuna can also be found nearshore and offshore much of the year.
An astounding 1,142-pound, 12-ounce Bluefin Tuna was caught at Block Island in 1981. It holds the Rhode Island state record for this species. Other record Rhode Island catches from Block Island include a 77-pound, 6.4-ounce Striped Bass; a 2,909-pound Shark and a 14-pound, seven-ounce Green Bonito.
