Hooking Up Anglers Since 2011.
When Homosassa was first settled in the 1850s, the shoreline was undeveloped. A sugar plantation was established with quick access both to the Homosassa River and the Gulf of Mexico. Production at the plantation was so prolific that commerce quickly built up around the area. While agriculture has been a mainstay of Homosassa, it is worth noting that the name Homosassa comes from the Seminole Indians. It means "river of fishes," and it is not hard to see why.
The first thing to know about Homosassa fishing is that you do not have to go far to get great catches. Inshore fishing is very popular in the area. In fact, the most common fish to catch is Atlantic Tarpon. Atlantic Tarpon is so common in these waters that it would be a surprise not to catch some on a good fishing day. If you spend time with inshore Homosassa fishing, you might also catch Cobia, Red Drum, Pompano, Snook, Speckled Trout, and Flounder.
While the waters near the shore are full of life, you can also get good results a little ways off the coast. Nearshore Homosassa fishing will give good yields as well. If you take the time to navigate the reefs and wrecks just off the shoreline in the Gulf of Mexico, be prepared for large hauls of Snapper and Grouper. Other species you might encounter are Barracuda, King Mackerel, and lots of different species of Sharks. For those who want an offshore experience, you might be able to haul in Mahi-mahi, Sailfish, and Wahoo.
Finally, do not overlook freshwater fishing in Homosassa. The Homosassa River is a vital waterway, and it has a lot of freshwater species. You might catch Largemouth Bass, Gar and Bream. With this range of options, the fishing in Homosassa can attract every type of angler.
