Islamorada Fishing

Islamorada is known as the Sport Fishing Capital of the World. Two of the most famous Islamorada residents and anglers were Zane Grey and Ted Williams. Even though Ernest Hemingway lived in Key West, he would drive his boat Pilar to fish the better waters around Islamorada. Harry Truman also visited and fished often. With close proximity to the back country flats, coral reefs, and Gulf Stream, there is no wonder why this is a favorite fishing destination for many famous fishermen.

Fishing offshore of Islamorada will produce great catches of Barracuda, Blackfin Tuna, Kingfish, Mahi-mahi (dolphinfish), and Wahoo much of the year. During the Spring and Summer many Blue Marlin are caught, and during the Fall and Winter the Sailfish are plentiful. Fishing the deep waters for daytime Swordfish originated in Islamorada.

Bottom fishing the many reefs and bridges around Islamorada with offer Amberjack (aka Reef Donkeys), Jack Crevalle, Sheepshead, and many species of Snapper and Grouper. Fishing the shallow water flats in the back country can be exciting with catches of huge Tarpon, Snook, Redfish, Permit, and Bonefish.
