Key Biscayne Fishing

Key Biscayne Fishing

Key Biscayne is a small island located off the coast of Miami, Florida. The Tequesta people were the first known inhabitants of Key Biscayne, and the island was later used by Spanish explorers and pirates as a base for their operations in the area. During the 1800s, Key Biscayne was used primarily for farming and fishing. The northern two-thirds of the island used to be a coconut plantation in the 1900s and was the largest of its kind in the continental US at the time. In 1940, the owners of the plantation donated over 800 acres to Dade County with an agreement that the county would build a causeway to the island. Dade County used the 800 acres to build Crandon Park. Today, Key Biscayne is a popular destination for relaxing and other recreational activities like fishing.

Fishing is a popular activity in Key Biscayne, Florida due to the close proximity of the Gulf Stream and its abundant fish populations. The waters surrounding Key Biscayne are known for their variety of fish species, including Snapper, Grouper, Sailfish, Tarpon, and Bonefish. With many reefs and shipwrecks to provide habitat for fish, Key Biscayne is an ideal fishing destination. Some types of fish that you can catch inshore and nearshore on bottom include Gray Snapper, Hogfish, White Grunt and Yellowtail Snapper. There is also excellent Bonefish, Snook, and Tarpon on the flats and channels in Key Biscayne Bay. Offshore Key Biscayne fishing delivers Blackfin Tuna, Dolphinfish (Mahi-mahi), Sailfish, Swordfish, and Wahoo.

A record 26.38-inch Atlantic Bonefish was caught in Key Biscayne in 2021. International Game Fish Association acknowledged it as a world record for the All Tackle Length Fly Atlantic Bonefish category.
