Port Aransas Fishing

Port Aransas Fishing

Port Aransas has been through a few name changes over the centuries, including Sand Point, Ropesville and Tarpon. Spanish explorer Alonzo Álvarez de Pineda discovered the island that this city is on in 1519. Legend has it that Jean La Fitte buried treasure somewhere on the island and marked it with a Spanish dagger that has a silver spike through the hilt. By the 1850s, a regular steamship service traveled between Port Aransas and New Orleans. Port Aransas fishing became popular in the 1800s, and former president Franklin D. Roosevelt himself fished here several times during the 1930s.

Inshore fishing around Port Aransas on the many flats, creeks, and other fishing structures, you may Black Drum, Red Drum, Speckled Trout, and Tarpon. In the surf and off the beaches there are lots of Pompano, Whiting, Spanish Mackerel, Bluefish, and other fish species much of the year. On the many nearshore reefs there is excellent Gag Grouper, Red Grouper, Red Snapper, Vermillion, Snapper, and Triggerfish to catch on bottom. There are also many Amberjacks, Barracuda, King Mackerel, and Sharks over the many reefs and rocky areas.

Further offshore there is excellent deep water species of fish to target, including Tilefish and Snowy Grouper. There is also excellent Blackfin Tuna, Yellowfin Tuna, Wahoo, Marlin, and Swordfish to target around the oil rigs, domes, humps, and canyon edges, making some of the best fishing Port Aransas has to offer.
