There are few cities with more history in North America than St. Augustine. It was first settled by Spanish explorers in 1565, and it has been continuously inhabited by Europeans ever since that time. While St. Augustine has evolved into a compelling modern city, the historical sites still draw a crowd. Visitors still stop at the old Castillo, and the city gates date back to 1808. The history of the area is strong. St. Augustine fishing is just as strong.
With ready access to the Atlantic Ocean, there is a good variety of fishing from the shoreline, nearshore, and off the coast. The inshore waters are filled with Bluefish, Cobia, Flounder, Red Drum (Redfish), and Speckled Trout. The many reefs, ledges, and shipwrecks off St. Augustine hold many species of Grouper and Snapper. There is also excellent King Mackerel fishing much of the year.
Beyond the nearshore areas, you can find a number of other fish species in the deeper waters of the Atlantic. Blue Marlin, Swordfish or Sailfish are the most popular billfish offshore of St. Augustine, and they can be quite bountiful. There is excellent deep water Grouper and Tilefish in the deep as well.
St. Augustine is known for its saltwater fishing. However, you can also give freshwater St. Augustine fishing a try at local waterways like St. Johns River, Rodman Reservoir or Lake George. These are all within easy driving distance of the city. Your best bet at these freshwater destinations will be fish like Crappie or Largemouth Bass. With Florida’s temperate climate, freshwater fishing is good all year. These fish are never truly out of season when you fish in St. Augustine.
