Well time flies when you are having fun in this wonderful part of the world, and summer has arrived with the typical northerly's and the gusty storms from the south west and the horrible ones from the north west, lets hope we don't get any severe ones in our neighborhood.
Fishing in summer is lots of fun, as this gets printed the spotty mackerel have made there way back into the bay and the size of the early ones as usual are 70 to 80cm and mostly female. They seem to come into the bay 2 to 3 weeks before the males arrive, which are a little smaller, but more of them. The last few years they have been feeding close into the bay and it won't be any different this year. You will be able to find them wide of Green Island to Peel Island and all the way through to the western side of Moreton. You can also find them along the shipping channels and the old greasy hole east of Mud Island.
There are a few ways to catch these wonderful tasting fish, if you are chasing the feeding schools you will need a chrome slug 35gm weight. I find the best are a good quality spinning reel and rod, no wire just a thicker trace or you double your line, and its a matter of casting and a quick retrieve around the feeding schools. If you cast around the schools you will not get bitten off as much.
The other way is to use a diving board(paravane) with a 3inch metal spoon like a Makka or a Halco and White Smith jigs work as well.(if you need to know how to set up, email me on sperok@ozemail.com.au and I will be happy to send you a drawing).
Whiting are also in very good numbers in summer especially in the Rous channel/Small boat channel/Chain Banks and of course the Sandhills at Moreton Island. A good paternoster rig and fresh blood worms is the best way to go, but peeled prawns and squid strips work ok as well, and if you are fit and healthy and can pump, yabbies are fantastic.
The squire and snapper are also around this time of year especially around the close-in Bay Islands on the drop offs, around Green and St Helena Islands(watch the no fish zone) and Mud and Peel Islands. Harrys artificial reef is always a good place to have a fish but these days there are 30 to 40 boats on a good day.
If you are after a black king or two and the occasionally small marlin, as our yard manager Shane at East Coast has caught over the last couple of years, try on the western side of Moreton around Shark Spit. In the deeper water and around the shipping beacons is a good place to try with a live bait or a floating pilly.
So slip slop slap, keep a good eye on the weather, and bring home a fresh fish or two for dinner.
