Fishing Report: December 26th 2022

North winds and cold temps have made fishing in Palm coast great. Low tides and clean water have got the redfish very active and happy. From schools of fish to singles cruising the bank looking for and easy meal, there’s plenty of opportunity for sight casting anglers to take advantage of. For less experienced anglers a split shot and small circle hook, rigged with a live shrimp will fool a hungry fish just fine.

Redfish flies have always been one of my favorites to tie, little shrimp are a favorite of mine for the Flagler Beach, Palm coast area. Tan, brown, and olive are great colors a little bit of flash and light weight or bead chain eyes tied on a size 4-1 hook will do the trick. I like to keep it simple with about 18’-24” of fluorocarbon or mono leader rigged up on a 6-8wt rod.

For spin anglers looking to sight cast redfish in the winter time, paddle tails, shrimp and jerk baits are great options for artificial baits. Fluorocarbon or mono leaders about 24” and a medium to medium light rod with a 2500 or 3000 size spinning reel is all you need. For those looking to take home a few fish for dinner winter time is a great time to look for sheepshead, a tasty crab eating fish that makes its way inshore in the winter time, is a great option.
