Spring Newsletter 2024

This Spring has seen some fantastic fishing with some big trophy fish landed by guests.

Quality cobia, golden trevally, bonefish, longtail tuna and more were stand outs over a busy spring season.

Late winter also provided the goods with snapper, goldens, spanish mackerel and queenfish giving guests some great days on the water.

Our beautiful humpback whales also put on a great show this season and we now say goodbye to them until next July.

Our fly fishing clients had an amazing time this spring with some epic catches.

The Black marlin season was another tough one this year but we have been getting a few along the way.

It was a good season on the big fish in Cairns last year and spawning conditions looked like they were fairly good.
Last year right when the spawning season was happening (or at least when the eggs would have been vulnerable), north Queensland had a very early season cyclone batter the coast.  I believe it could have been a contributing factor to our season this year.

With a more normal weather pattern this year we have everything crossed for 2025 Black Marlin Season!

CXI 2024

We recently visited the Republic of Kiribati staying at The Villages and had a fantastic trip. For anyone that fly-fishes, I recommend you have to get there at least once in your life.  It's a fantastic fishery and being on an Atoll in the middle of the pacific is a very cool experience.

One thing I noticed post covid was the size and quality of the fish. Bonefish over 8 pound were common and were tailing in very skinny water!  The trigger fish were again in big numbers and challenging. Sunny and Olivia had not experienced CXI before and were blown away by the friendly people, the great guiding and hospitality.
We also had some crazy encounters with big GT’s and of course not always having the correct rod in hand these encounters didn’t end well with fly lines sent to the horizon.  We live by "cast first, ask questions later" mentality - you never know your luck!
If you are interested in a trip to CXI feel free to contact us we can put you in touch with the best outfitters so that you can experience the best fishing and lodging on offer.

2025 Summer and Tuna Season

Well the time has come to pull out the diary and start locking in those 2025 trips. We have had a fair bit of interest already for 2025 so get in quick for our exciting longtail tuna season.

Although it’s a great time of year for a range of species, longtails are a crowd pleaser and can be caught on various techniques.

We have mutli-day trips available so please be in touch.

Other News

Our newest addition to the HBFSF fleet is coming along nicely.

With the help of master boat builder and craftsman Robbie Ferguson of Beastmaster Boats, we have designed a hybrid bay boat concept with a deeper V to take on the chop we experience here in the Bay and inside the barrier reef.  This vessel will be 23 feet with a single engine making it economical and comfortable.
It is an exciting project and should be completed sometime in the first quarter of 2025. We cant wait for this build by Robbie as we move into our 16th season of guiding in Hervey Bay .
