Autumn/Winter 2025 Newsletter

What a year we have had so far with weather challenges!  We still have made the most of our opportunities.

The tuna season was a great one with good numbers of longtail tuna from February to late May. They did drop off a little earlier than we would have liked but while they were here it was certainly a great season.

With the longtails we see queenfish, Spanish mackerel, mac tuna, cobia and golden trevally. These species can certainly all be on the one bait ball making some great experiences.

The top water fishing was also outstanding with the longtails taking a liking to the many of the top water offerings we use supplied by Wilson Fishing. The Zappelins and Venom V sticks were stand outs. Also a more sub surface presentation the Duo Press Baits were fantastic. You can check out the range of Wilson products here.

The flats also produced with some good sessions on longtail tuna. Black torpedoes as I describe them - they are unmistakable when they come gliding down the flats. Fish over a meter were encountered on the flats, true trophy fish!

On the reefs - for those interested in some demersal species, we dropped jigs and plastics for species such as coral trout, cod and sweetlip.  These made for a tasty addition to the esky for those chasing a feed.

We also have had a great run of broadbar mackerel!  These tasty pelagics arrived back in January and have not left, just moving location slightly throughout the months as they start to spawn in the Sandy Straits.

Big Spanish were also abundant, and if caught outside of the no take area, are fine for anglers to take home for a feed.

Fly Fishing

We had some fun sessions on longtails on fly throughout the season.  They prove to be one of the most exciting fish on a fly rod.  Crazy bait balls, 100m blistering runs and line burns is what longtails on fly are all about!  Targeting them on the flats is taking it to the next level and changes the game with casts needing to be pin point accurate and delivered quickly.  Testing your skills on a flats longtail is a must do!

The flats scene was great, with catches of golden trevally and our grey bastards - also a challenging target species for the fly angler.  We also had some fun sessions on small GT’s, tailor, blue salmon and cobia on the flats.

Snapper

Our winter snapper season was a good one with fish to 90 cm being captured by guests.  Although seasons for snapper are shorter than they used to be, we do enjoy some fantastic shallow water light tackle snapper fishing.  The shallow waters of the bay with a average depth of 18m, create a opportunity to feel how hard snapper can fight and for sport fisherman they release well in the shallow waters.

School holidays

Our winter school holidays are a popular one with guests. Visitors from the southern states really enjoy our winter weather and this year was no exception. The great run of winter weather started early and has run through the year so far.
Winter holiday species encountered were snapper, cobia, school mackerel, longtail tuna, cods and more.

When planning your school holiday adventure with us please book in early now you don''t miss out on your preferred dates.

CXI Tour 2025

Sunny, Liv and I ventured to The Republic of Kiribati once again.  For us, Christmas Island is a great escape from the usual home waters and is a great place to unwind, walk the flats and test our skills on skinny water bonefish and triggers.  Our 2025 trip was another cracker with some great fish landed.
Sunny got a nice bag of triggers with Liv landing some great bonefish on fly and also had a ball on triggers using some of the Rapala crush city range of soft plastics.  For myself, my stand out was a slam of a GT, trigger and bonefish in one day with the GT being a new PB on fly.  All credit goes to my guide Taatoa.  Taatoa can sniff a GT out and he loves seeing his anglers come tight.  Thanks again mate great memories made.

Whitsunday East Coast Tour 2025

We recently hosted our good friends from Singapore for 6 days of action packed fishing around the Whitsundays.
The boys had fun on the flats and reefs around the islands landing some cracking fish. Coral trouts, GT's, wrasse, chinaman fish and spanish mackerel were on there bucket list and the weather gods smiled on us and we had a blinder.  We caught up with some good friends while up there and had an absolute ball guiding the boys around.

We also had a opportunity at the back end of the trip for a guides day off and had a ball chasing some of the flats species. We had shots at permit, tuskies, golden trevally, queenfish and GT's.  A rare day off for us guides when weather and fish were happy.

I managed probably the fish of my lifetime - a new PB of 75 cm of absolute stump pulling tractor.  This beautiful blue bone is a fish I'll never forget.

We will be announcing some dates for our 2026 tour in the coming months.  If you are interested in fishing in this great location on lure or fly fishing tackle, reach out to us.
