After a few tough trips, Capt. Howard Bogan Jr. was happy to report good yellowfin tuna action Sunday night on his Jamaica from Brielle. After a few tough trips, Capt. Howard Bogan Jr. was happy to report good yellowfin tuna action Sunday night on his Jamaica from Brielle. The best action occured at 6 a.m. with a hot bite for an hour that provided limits of yellowfin tuna for several anglers. Earlier, Bob Knemoller of Toms River boated a 150-pound swordfish. He later added two yellowfins. One other sworfish was lost by another angler, and a small sword was released. The catch of the week was a 280-pound bigeye runa by John Zappela of Woodside in Queens, New York. Bogan has reservations available on 30-hour canyon trips departing at 7 a.m. Tuesday and Thursday -- and on 5 p.m. trips Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Call 732 528-5014.  The Jamaica Star will run bluefish trips at 7:30 a.m. and p.m. Saturday -- and 7 a.m. Sunday. Bluefish have been hitting in the Mud Hole.

The Paramount from Brielle has been into better ling fishing, with catches up to 20 to 30 an angler. Pogy fishing is also good.

Tom Morford Jr. of Northern Marine Electronics in Red Bank had two good trips to Monster's Ledge over the weekend.  Five bluefin tuna in the 30-inch class were chunked on the drift Saturday, including the one keeper of 27 inches or more that's allowed. Only one bluefin was boated Sunday, but a 13-foot thresher was fought to boatside on the mono leader before Morford cut the leader for a release.

Paul Haertel took a break from the surf to fish wrecks offshore of Long Beach Island from his boat. He reported clear, 65 degree waters all the way out to a wreck that provided him with 11 keeper cod to 10 pounds out of 17 caught, plus a 24-inch pollock, two ling up to almost 4 pounds -- and the usual assortment of "trash" fish including 31 spiny dogfish, bergalls, ocean pout, and sea ravens. Some out-of-season sea bass had to be released.

Surf fishing was disappointing this morning. I didn't see a thing at Sea Girt; John Green reported no action in northern Ocean County despite mullet in the surf; and Allen Riley of South Plainfield said nothing was caught early in the morning at Sandy Hook despite the presence of some bait.

Joe Melillo, at Castaways Tackle in Point Pleasant has weighed a few fish plugged in the surf lately.Tom Brown of Spring Lake had bass of 15 1/4 and 14 1/2 pounds, and  Steve Bellows from Lakewood plugged a 14 1/4-pounder at Manasquan. Terry Martuscelli of Brick caught a 15 3/8-pound striper in Manasquan River. Melillo says blackfishing in Point Pleasant Canal is the best bet, but green crabs are hard to obtain. He expects to have them in again Wednesday.
