Salmon Fishing Scotland Salmon Fishing Report for the last 3 days on the Tay Perthshire Scotland in October 2012.

 | By Seamus on 11/1/2012 6:24:17 PM | Views (84)

The catches were reasonable for the last 3 days but hard earned after the river fell away on Monday and Tuesday then rose rapidly on Wednesday curtailing catches. The quality of salmon remained high with fish up to 31 pounds in weight caught and there was still a lot of evidence of fresh salmon running the river, this was again encouraging and made the extension fishing a success by and large on most beats.

There were 154 salmon reported which was another good return for the river considering Wednesday was difficult with a rising river. Large salmon continued to be caught with a 31 pounds salmon landed at Cargill and two 29 pounds fish caught at Glendelvine and Dalmarnock respectively. Salmon were landed throughout the system from the Lower River to the Dalguise. There have now been in the region of 700 salmon recorded during the extension period, a good percentage have been fresh and right up the system that has opened a few eyes.

The 2012 season has now finally closed and catches remain just ahead of the 5 year average which can not be bad. It will not be long before we are celebrating the 2013 Opening on the 15th January.

Beat catches reported

On the Lower River 90 salmon were landed. All the lower beats are having reasonable success but having to work extremely hard using all sorts of methods to gain catches and this has been pretty much the case since September. The very lower beats have not been catching which has been disappointing. The Fishponds and Upper Redgorton seemed to be the lowest part of the river having success on the last few days.

At Stanley a party from Shetland enjoyed 3 days on Benchil and Pitlochrie. Stobhall and Taymount finished their seasons well and reported catching several fresh salmon during the extension period. Many scale samples have been taken of the fish caught which should prove interesting. Ballathie and Cargill enjoyed good sport as well with Cargill recording a 31 pounds salmon. On Ballathie Ian Mitchells party had 3 good days landing 11 salmon. Islamouth continued its excellent season catching 11 on Tuesday and this must have been one of the most productive beats on any river in Scotland this year.

The Middle River registered 64. This was another good few days with all the beats reporting success. Kercock finished the season off well landing several salmon.
Dougie McIntosh and Dougie McLean were amongst the successful rods. The Murthly beats were also doing well with Stenton and the Upper beat having bumper days on Monday and Tuesday. On Glendelvine Ed Page landed a 29 pounds salmon fly fishing on Tuesday and they also reported several fresh salmon running through the river catching fish covered in sea lice.
Newtyle also enjoyed a good finally to the season landing 14 salmon over the three days. Good salmon were landed up to 17 pounds mostly on the fly. Successful anglers included Malcolm Andreson, Sandip Datta, Martin Wilson, John Legg, Jon Wood and James Holder. At Dalmarnock Gordon Pollock landed a 29 pounds salmon on the fly and
Neil McGowan enjoyed some last day success as well.

The Tay Conservation Dinner was held at the Dunkeld Hilton Hotel on Saturday 20th October with a good turn out raising valuable revenue for the Tay Board Hatchery. Over £24,000 was raised on the night and thank you all very much for taking part. Long Service awards went to Bill Sutherland of Baldarroch, John Tait of Upper Redgorton and Jimmy Last of the Waulkmill beat.

Celebrate a Tay salmon with a Dalmore Tay Dram and contribute to the future of this mighty river. Dalmore distillery have created a unique expression of their single malt whisky and a generous donation from each bottle sold will be gifted to the Tay Foundation to support their work to protect and improve the river.

Many thanks for all the pictures everyone sent me of salmon throughout the season and thanks to all who have sent me their individual fishing experiences on the river. I would be most grateful if you continue this by emailing robert.salmonfishing@googlemail.com to be included in this report.
