DAMPIER AND POINT SAMSON FADS ALREADY FIRING WITH BLACK MARLIN CAPTURES REPORTED!

It's been a great week for Pilbara fishers with the four FADs off Dampier and Point Samson already firing up for billfish and plenty of great catches also reported from the 2023 Dampier Classic!

Kudos to the Dampier Classic competitors and the King Bay Game Fishing Club who allowed our Fishing for Science team to take 63 belly samples from more than 15 different species at the filleting table, which will allow us to better understand the size, weight, health and sex of these fish with support from Woodside Energy.

Broome catches

If someone is beaming in Broome, it's usually from a barramundi. This fat and healthy specimen was landed by the crew from @reelteaserfishingadventures and it was great to see a good spike of barra captures this week around the Kimberley.

Boats

Conditions in Broome have been mixed, but on the good days offshore fishing has been firing for reef species such as red emperor, Rankin cod and coral trout in particular, which were all mostly caught in 50-60m depths. Closer in along the fringing reefs cobia and Spanish mackerel were caught on trolled hard-bodied lures in 15-20m depths. Sailfish were landed in depths from 25m, while black marlin have been targeted and caught further out. In Roebuck Bay a few northern mulloway came from lumps around the edge of the Deeps, while Crab Creek has continued to fish well for threadfin salmon and barramundi. Threadfin have also been caught at the Fingers. The stronger easterlies might make it a tad choppy on the water this weekend for the boaties in Broome so most will opt to stay in closer where it's more sheltered.

Shore-based

For the land-based fishers around Broome the Town Beach Jetty produced bream, javelin fish, trevally, whiting and queenfish, while the Port Jetty has offered bigger queenfish and trevally as well as a few cod and bluebone. Whiting have been the main species caught from Cable Beach, while Willie Creek held bream, mangrove jack and whiting. Barred Creek saw trevally and queenfish, with stickbaits worked aggressively getting the job done. At Quandong Point bluebone were active along with small trevally and queenfish. Ballooning for Spanish mackerel with the easterly wind has been a good option at Gantheaume Point and the snaggy ground around there can also hold bluebone in decent sizes. There is going to be some very strong easterlies rolling through this weekend so that option is open again. More barramundi reports have filtered in from the Fitzroy River with Langi Crossing and Telegraph Pool believed to be the better spots. Exmouth catches

If you were lucky enough to hitch a ride aboard @seaestarboatcharters this week, odds are you were put onto some mighty fish. This solid yellowfin tuna found the @richterlures Soft Grassy too good to resist on the troll at the Rowley Shoals.

Boats

With reasonable conditions this week around Exmouth plenty of boats trolling skirted lures or garfish baits found black marlin and sailfish in depths from 50m. Among the billfish were wahoo, dolphinfish and smaller tuna. In closer on the western side around Tantabiddi, Spanish mackerel were caught on trolled hard-bodied lures in 20m depths. Bottom fishing has been rewarding with goldband snapper in 60-70m depths, coral trout and Rankin cod in 20-40m depths. It was a similar story for demersal species around the Muirons, with the same depths producing the same species. In the Gulf, the shoals have been fishing very well for pelagics such as yellowfin tuna, cobia and various mackerel species, while bottom fishers have found blue-lined and spangled emperor, coral trout and trevally. Squid have also been in good numbers around the weed banks south of town. Another good squidding spot near Exmouth is out from the industrial area in depths from 2-5m. With the nice flat conditions expected all week, it should be pleasant on the water around Exmouth no matter where you go.

Shore-based

If you prefer to keep the sand between your toes while fishing in Exmouth or wade the shallows then the Gulf has been a great option this week. Giant herring and queenfish have been caught in good numbers, while whiting have been plentiful from Learmonth heading northwards. Learmonth Jetty has also offered bream, squid and the odd trevally and at Bundegi, queenfish and trevally have been cruising through bait schools. The marina held cod, mangrove jack, bream and trevally and a few squid have also come from the rocks around the industrial area. Around the Lighthouse spangled emperor, queenfish and brassy trevally have been caught with the same species also taken at Tantabiddi. Wapet Creek could be worth a try for mud crabs this weekend with those calmer conditions as well. Big thanks to the great crew from Tackle World Exmouth for their tips!

Kalbarri catches

You can tell by the battle scars that this Spanish mackerel has seen plenty of action! @robbie_riches continued to pull in some solid mackies off the Mid-West coast this week.

Boats

Once again there’s been no pelagic action to report unfortunately, with boats giving up targeting Spanish mackerel and tuna for now. Despite plenty of baitfish being around they believe low water temperatures have made the fish inactive. Instead, boaties have been dropping cray pots with good results. Many others have been flicking stickbaits, small metals and ganged mulies around the mouth of the Murchison River for tailor, which has seen decent results with fish ranging from 35-60cm on occasions. For boats chasing the larger tailor in better numbers, most have been crossing the river to fish Frustrations and Oyster Reef where fish crossing the 50cm mark are more common. Just remember that you can only take two fish over 50cm, so once you have your two make sure the rest go back to continue to breed. The mornings for the next week are looking calmest and hold the best windows for the boaties.

Shore-based

Land-based fishing has been saving the day for eager fishers in Kalbarri lately. Big mulloway are the hot topic this week with a 23kg specimen caught in the Murchison River upstream from the marina, while a similar-sized fish is believed to have been caught at Lucky Bay. In the Murchison the marina has offered bream around the 30cm mark and a few cod. Mud crabs have been hanging about as well. The spit held yellowfin whiting but chopper tailor catches have tapered off there. Good tailor have been taken from the river mouth around Chinamans, with most fish over the 40cm mark. Jakes Bay has offered big garfish and big sand whiting and while they were lower in numbers, 60cm+ tailor have been caught there also. Red Bluff has offered sand whiting, herring and small tailor. Pot Alley and Goat Gulch have produced the odd pink snapper, but plenty of nuisance fish have been stealing snapper baits at Goat Gulch, which might be a good excuse to start flicking around slightly larger soft plastics. Geraldton catches

Jurien Bay seemed to be Sambo heaven this past week and @cooperrwatsonn and his pal bought two tickets to the gun show with these beauties. If you haven't seen Anchorman and don't understand that reference, go watch it immediately.

Boats

Squidding is still rolling along, with Point Moore among the better spots. Numbers have not been great, but the size has more than made up for it as one squid landed this week had a monster tube a whisker under 50cm, which just goes to show how quickly this species grows as most squid caught by anglers in Western Australia are generally less than one year old. Whiting fishing has been very quiet, but skippy and herring catches should make up the shortfall with calmer winds and swell expected for a majority of this week. In the Chapman River kayak fishers have caught bream nudging 40cm. There have been minimal reports of pelagic activity, although tailor and mulloway are a good chance this weekend with the calmer forecast expected and tuna or mackerel are a chance on the troll with cleaner water clarity on the cards.

Shore-based

The stretch from Point Moore to the Fishing Boat Harbour has fished well for whiting, with many anglers getting 10-15 in an evening session with chopper tailor and pike in the mix as well. At Drummonds Cove tailor were still being caught on silver casting jigs and smaller Halco Twisties, which seem to be outfishing other lures and ganged mulies. Not many other reports have come in this week, but other options worth a try could be bream in the Greenough River or squid and bread-and-butter fish from the Batavia Coast Marina given the ideal conditions. Lancelin catches

Lancelin's Fishing guru Peter Fullarton from Tailored Treks showed that you simply have to be trolling in the right place at the right time, with this fat and healthy yellowfin tuna landed on Wednesday. With great conditions expected this weekend, make sure you have skirts or hard-bodied lures out the back to potentially experience the same thrill.

Boats

Last weekend a beach surge prevented most boats from launching. This weekend is thankfully looking like glamorous conditions to blow some cobwebs out of the boat and head west to look for tuna schools. Earlier this week tuna were encountered inside the 30m depths. Inside the bay smaller boats have been fishing the clearer water and found that snook were abundant over the weed beds, with the slender fish very hungry and quick to attack any lure or jig. This included squid jigs, making it difficult to catch a few squid. If you are going squidding in this area, we recommend using cheaper squid jigs that you're not afraid to damage as the teeth of snook can shred the fabric. Schools of herring and skippy have been attracted to burley trails and Samson fish have been known to turn up at some stage to bust up on the party as schools are roaming the shallows of the bay looking for trouble. Decent sized sand whiting have also been caught in 5-6m depths both north and south of town. Enjoy those pristine conditions tomorrow and during the mornings on Sunday and Monday.

Shore-based

Weed has been a problem in many spots and the steep, soft sand has been catching out a lot of 4WD’s, which have required help to be rescued. For all the effort, most people were reporting the fishing very slow with only a few tailor caught, although the gutters were holding school mulloway with some groups managing to land several fish. Those who stayed closer to town seemed to find better results with some herring, skippy and tarwhine landed from the southern bay beaches. Weed thankfully started washing away from north point with the weather, which opened the door for some chopper tailor and small sharks at night. The jetty saw herring and small chopper tailor under the lights each night. It's looking great for land-based fishers for all of Saturday with Sunday and Monday morning also worth a crack. Esperance catches

Billy Vibart @fishingbv took advantage of the better conditions one evening this week to find this decent gummy shark lurking in one of the gutters off the beach. Easily the best tasting of all shark species caught off the WA coast (we've heard wobbegongs are right up there too).

Boats

Good conditions this week saw many boats heading out and most crews weren’t disappointed. Queen snapper have been in good numbers in 15-20m depths with fish up to 8kg being caught in the burley trails. Samson fish have also been targeted and good catches of 15-20kg fish have come from Observatory Island, Black Island and Woody Island. Breaksea cod have been plentiful and catches have been widespread from depths as shallow as 8m right up to 80m. Nannygai were in big numbers this week with the 40-50m depths towards Figure of Eight Island the better spots, while harlequin fish have been in good numbers near Lion Island. Lots of big sand whiting have been caught on the drift at Wylie Bay while big King George whiting have come from Lovers Cove. Squid have been abundant in 14m depths at Cook Rocks and anywhere in Esperance Bay between the port rock wall and the Town Jetty. Thankfully the calmer conditions will return this weekend with a lower southerly wind and swell expected over both days.

Shore-based

Dunns Beach lived up to last week’s predictions and has been red-hot for gummy sharks up to 18kg. Smaller gummy sharks around the 8kg mark have been caught at Israelite Bay and Alexander Bay. Salmon have been in plague proportions between Israelite Bay and Munglinup, even in the sheltered bays right in town. Locals say it’s the best year for salmon they can remember, with many of the fish crossing the 85cm and 6kg mark. Big skippy have been caught at Roses Beach, while chunky sand whiting have also come from Observatory Beach. The 10-Mile Lagoon has been a hotspot for flathead, with baits and soft plastics working best. The town foreshore and Bandy Creek Boat Harbour have held good numbers of King George whiting, while the Town Jetty and Taylor Street Jetty have produced squid, plenty of bull herring in the afternoons and garfish at night. Stokes Inlet has held bream up to 40cm and bream are also starting to fire at Woody Lake, but sizes there have been small. The winner of Southern Sports and Tackle’s Chase the Kracken squid competition was 13-year-old Tijs Loomes whose 45cm-hooded squid caught from the Town Jetty after school won him $1000, which the youngster says he will put towards a boat so he can expand his fishing adventures! With the calmer conditions expected this weekend, the Town Jetty should continue to fire for krakens. Big thanks to Southern Sport & Tackle for their report as always!

Great Southern catches

Salmon were on fire all along the south coast of Western Australia this week and Tackle World Miami's Ash Ramm decided to take a roadtrip and make the most of it, with family and friends all hooking up to this hard-fighting West Aussie favourite.

Boats

This weekend promises glamourous weather, with low swells and light winds so there is no doubt boats will be getting out to the coral ground to target pink snapper, queen snapper, dhufish and nannygai. Many others will head out to the continental shelf for hapuka and blue-eye trevalla. There were few weather windows for fishers to take advantage of this past week, but some boats reached the coral ground for a few hours last weekend and managed a few dhufish and pink snapper in difficult conditions, while others who were content to stay in close and fish King George Sound did better on the usual fare of King George whiting and squid. Out from Cheynes Beach pink snapper and harlequin fish have been caught. Conditions are looking great until the northerly wind spikes from around 3pm on Sunday, so maybe try coming in before then to avoid the chop.

Shore-based

Beach fishing has been difficult due to big swells and washed-away tracks. Cheynes Beach has offered herring, a few flathead and some nice skippy, but most fishers have stayed close to town where the Middleton Beach stretch has produced King George whiting and squid. Decent King George whiting, squid and skippy have come from Frenchman Bay and Emu Point also produced the same species. Squid, herring and whiting species have been caught from the town marina with leatherjacket among them. Elsewhere, a few small bream have come from the King and Kalgan rivers but dirty water and strong currents have made fishing difficult, while Denmark’s Wilson Inlet produced flathead, mulloway, skippy and King George whiting. A few bream have been caught in the Denmark River, with most fish crossing the 30cm mark. Beach fishing is definitely on the cards this weekend with nice conditions expected, so get out there and enjoy it. Big thanks to the crew from Trailblazers in Albany for their tips!

South West catches

After putting up a serious battle for prolonged periods of time, sometimes Samson fish just need a hug. Good thing the skilled crew from @2_oceans_tackle know how to take quality snaps of quality fish and show them a bit of love before releasing them.

Boats

Tuna have been keeping boat fishers entertained with the 16m depths from Bunbury down to Geographe Bay producing plenty of fish via stickbaits cast into schools that were busting up on the surface. Boaties have also been doing well on sand whiting and squid around Bunbury in about 14m depths. In Geographe Bay, King George whiting around the 40cm mark have been among the sand whiting and squid have been plentiful in 10-12m depths. Kayakers fishing out from Dolphin Road have been doing well in 4-5m depths with Shimano Sephia Flash jigs in purple outfishing most other colours. North of Busselton, the 15m depths have been the magic mark for squid, while out from Bunbury a few kidney-slapping King George whiting measuring over 50cm have been caught in the 40-50m depths. Conditions are once again looking ideal, with the roughest period over the next week likely to be Sunday afternoon at this stage with a slight spike in wind and swell.

Shore-based

Pink snapper catches have tapered off a little from beaches north of town, although 40-50cm pinkies have been in big numbers and have released well at Preston. There has been just enough mulloway activity to keep anglers interested along the Preston to Belvedere stretch of coast and also down at Dalyellup. A few mulloway have come from Busselton Jetty towards the end of the structure, but squid have been the main catch there. Just keep an eye out for fresh ink marks on the jetty and you know you're casting over the right territory. In Bunbury a few small chopper tailor have been around Back Beach where burley has also helped bring in a few herring. Yellow-eye mullet have been among the herring in decent numbers. Kudos to the crew from Whitey's Tackle for their tips!

Freshwater

Want to know where the freshwater fish are at? Just follow Simon Holland @southernforests_angler, the man is a trout whisperer. This was just one of many quality fish he landed this week around Manjimup.

Brown trout have been caught at Logue Brook Dam, which has also been holding plenty of chunky redfin perch crossing the 35cm mark which were taken from the banks by anglers working soft plastics and casting to where they believe structure is submerged. In Harvey Dam, redfin have been caught on blade and spoon lures. Brown trout have also been caught throughout the shallow streams and rivers around Pemberton, which also saw rainbows and redfin perch landed in Lefroy Brook. The feeder creeks at Eastbrook have fished well for rainbow trout too, with some caught on worms and others on hard-bodied lures with plenty of underwater action such as Halco RMG Scorpions. Rainbow trout have come from the Collie River and there have been good numbers of redfin in Wellington Dam. Mandurah and surrounds

You don't need to venture out too far to find where the schools of plump King George whiting are lurking off Mandurah or Rockingham. For tips on how to catch them and where to go in order to come home with a delicious feed, just speak with the friendly @tackle_world_miami crew.

Mandurah

King George whiting have been active inshore and offshore with the best areas being the broken ground in the 18-24m depth strip just past the outside edge of Five Fathom Bank. Right on Five Fathom skippy have continued to fish well with burley bringing them around in big numbers. Sand whiting are another species that has been firing, especially in the 8-10m depths inside Five Fathom Bank. Small tuna have been around the 30-40m depth lines behind Five Fathom and bigger tuna have been caught in 90m depths. Out from Dawesville, Samson fish have been active on jigs and soft plastics. With swells easing, crayfishers have been putting their pots on the inner reefs and have been doing well in shallow 5-12m depths. In the Murray and Serpentine rivers bream activity has picked up, but the sizes haven’t been flash, while for beach fishing the key has been to move away from the dirty water pouring out of the estuary system and finding the clean sea water where herring and whiting have been in good numbers. The same goes when fishing the Dawesville Cut or the Mandurah traffic bridges, where the best fishing window has been in the clean water on the back of the incoming tide which has offered herring, skippy and tarwhine. Enjoy those ideal conditions for all of Saturday and during Sunday morning and make sure you pay a visit to the great crew from Tackle World Miami for the best tips and gear!

SECRET HARBOUR / PORT KENNEDY / ROCKINGHAM / SAFETY BAY / WARNBRO SOUND

Squid have been widespread this week, with the better spots anywhere in Cockburn Sound, close to Garden Island, around Safety Bay and in 8-10m depths out from the Naval Base. Skippy have been in good numbers around Five Fathom Bank and tuna have been caught behind Garden Island. King George whiting catches have been decent in Cockburn Sound with it being a case of finding their favoured weedy and broken ground rather than specific depths. Plenty of sand whiting have been among the KG's and the exposed reefs around Garden Island produced tailor in the white-water. Rockingham and Palm Beach jetties fished reasonably well this week for the land-based anglers, with herring and small skippy responding to burley and a few squid also thrown into the mix. Long Point and Point Peron have held decent flathead and a few whiting, while Point Peron has been productive for squid. Woodman Point and the Ammo Jetty have offered herring, chopper tailor and squid. Beach fishing has been fairly quiet, but from Secret Harbour heading south the odd pink snapper has been landed along with school mulloway and a few chopper tailor in the mornings. Enjoy those ideal conditions tomorrow and on Sunday morning and big thanks to Compleat Angler Rockingham for their tips!

Perth catches

It wasn't just monster King George whiting that @jspencer_fishing landed this week off Perth, he also managed to find loads of Samson fish that provided some awesome entertainment on the jig. the 20-25m depths off Mindarie was a great spot for both KG's and Sambo's this week.

Boats

Squid and King George whiting have been the main targets with the 9m depths a good starting point for bigger squid but plenty of others were landed closer in, with kayak fishers still doing well on squid out from South Fremantle. Windmills has been one of the better spots for King George whiting in the 40cm range and lumps in 20m depths have also fished well for them. Skippy have been in good numbers in the reefy holes and further out around Five Fathom tuna have been caught in burley trails along with small yellowtail kingfish. Yellowtail kingfish have also been caught around Rottnest and at Five Fathom. The inshore lumps around Cottesloe produced small Samson fish in depths around 15-25m. Bigger Samson fish have been caught out from Mindarie and the Three-Mile Reef has held good skippy. Plump sand whiting up to 35cm have been among the KG's at Windmills and in the 20m depths off City Beach. Both of these locations have also held big flathead. Sand whiting have been in close too, in as little as 3-4m depths off Swanbourne. Saturday should be a dream on the water with a lot of boats heading out, so make sure you're courteous to others at the ramps and out at popular spots.

Shore-based

Black bream have been rather rampant throughout the Swan River recently, with most of the structure close to the bridges producing 35cm+ fish in good numbers. Talented fisher @bay_to_bluewater was all over them during the weekend.

Surprise catches from North and South moles this week included Samson fish in the 50-80cm range taken on micro jigs meant for skippy, and also on unweighted mulies meant for tailor. Squid have been caught from both moles with the bend at North Mole one of the better spots for bigger squid. Herring, skippy, snook and tailor have also been at the moles in reasonable numbers. Herring catches have been decent from the Fremantle Sailing Club rock walls. The traditional blob and lumo-tube setup has worked well, but youngsters have been having a ball catching herring on surface lures like Bassday Suga Pens. The rock walls have also held skippy and tarwhine with soft plastics working well when the blowies are quiet and fresh squid bait another good option. At Port Beach, tailor averaging 45cm have come from gutters in the mid-morning with big soft plastics the go-to lure. Big tailor around 70cm have also come from the reefs around Two Rocks where they have shown a liking for surface lures, while chopper tailor have been taken around Floreat at first light and sunset. Bream fishing in the Swan River system is still good with structure and deep holes from Maylands down to the Narrows and around the Mt Henry bridge holding plenty of fish, especially at night. The better evening catches have been on brightly coloured lures with rattles. Decent bream have also been caught around Burswood by anglers wading the flats and casting into the drop-offs. Bream by-catch in the rivers has been good too, with soapy mulloway up to 80cm and flathead around 40cm. Reports of flathead have also come from Applecross and Claremont and in the deep waters of Blackwall Reach.
