Folks always ask what I do in the off season fair question since these days I am mostly free from the middle of November to April. I do guide a few trips during the colder months ( ice fishing and the occasional nature exploration trip). But for the most part it is time at my desk and feeding the wood stove.

Clients frequently ask when the trips that we offer are available. Over the years seasons have expanded and fall is much longer (and warmer). Our seasons have stretched on both ends. For reference here are the general season dates that I tell folks who are considering a trip in the coming year. January 15 to March 2 Guided Ice fishing

Everyone asks about seeing a moose while they are out with me. The short answer is that while it is not impossible to see one here in the mid coast but it is not likely. Over many years guiding in coastal Maine I have had two moose great sightings both of those were while on salt water trips. One moose swam past the Lund early one morning less tha...

This morning we woke to a few inches of frosting on everything. Even the toy soldier who guards the front door for the holidays. The wet early snow clung to everything from soldiers to the tiniest branches. With little wind overnight or even during the day the snow hung on. This was a nice little storm no wind not too cold and it melted off of the...

At the end of the season I like to take a minute to reflect on how fortunate I have been. The thing that I am proudest of is the firsts that I have been able to assist. Usually a first fish or the first of some species or a skill like the first cast with a fly rod. After all these years I wish I had kept track of them.

The last fishing trip is in the books and the boat has been taken for its annual overhaul. It seems like April was just a few weeks ago! I am once again humbled and pleased by the support from all of you. Many who i see year after year.

Maine Outdoors receives lots of  great reviews from our clients it's the most rewarding part of being a guide. The positive feedback is a testament to the quality of our service and the connections we share. I post these client testimonials on the reviews page.  It's a great way for me to be reminded how much some of the trips I have guided have m...

We've made a significant decision here at Maine Outdoors and we want to share it with you. After careful consideration we've decided to part ways with the Orvis Endorsed Program. In this blog post I'll explain why we've made the choice to take the stickers from the boat truck website and brochures.

Cold rain here this afternoon current temperature is 36 degrees. After a warm week last week this is a shock. In fact the temperature fell 44 degrees in 24 hours over the weekend. We are forecast for a bit of a warmup later this week. However like the news of the last week about the mass shooting in Lewiston it came as a sudden reality check. Yes...

Thhis  afternoon s the weather is very much uncomfortable fall in Maine. Raining with a temperature of 48 degrees. Even the dogs do not want to leave their kennel. The forecast though is a whole different story. After tonight clear for the next week or so with most days forecast to be in the 60’s and one over 70. Not at all unpleasant!

Some things are constant. Birds migrating weather cooling days getting shorter certain chores need doing like putting in the winter firewood. All of those are happening or have happened here but added to the list is an annual trip to the North Maine Wood for Argy and I. She enjoys a few days off of the grid while the dogs and I walk through the ne...

As the season slows I have some time to reflect on all that happened since late April and how much I enjoyed almost every minute. To me the best part is having someone who has never been fishing before choosing a Maine Outdoors fishing trip for their first experience.

Fall is without a doubt my favorite time of year. While this year it was slow to start it has not been a disappointment as you can see. I have enjoyed spending many of these days on the water with clients who make me appreciate it even more.

No not this week for sure or even next week. But certainly by the middle of November and tapering from a couple of trips a day to a few a week before the end. Stripers are not gone from the Saint George but they have thinned out enough to make catching one a lot more work than it should be. All of my remaining trips will be on the freshwater for b...

I often talk about how much fun it is to see families over the years and last Saturday I had one of those experiences in spades. We struggled all morning to find fish and then I did get on them and they would not bite. This family held on (even after it was time to go) and lost a couple before finally boating this beauty. I think that smiles say i...

This week I was humbled to have been presented an award from the Maine Forest Products Council. The Abby Holman Public Service Award is given annually to an individual who has demonstrated a level of passion loyalty and dedication to Maine’s forest products industry to good government and a robust economy much the same way MFPC’s former Executive...

So far September is a continuation of the wet summer we have had with a hurricane on the horizon. It rained enough overnight that when a raised the Lund off of the hitch on the 4 runner this morning. The bilge pump went on! Took me a minute to figure out what was going on. I was also surprised that the pump ran for several minutes even though the...

It’s the little things that keep life interesting that is for sure and fill in lots of holes in my calendar. Today I had to drive to Augusta to be fingerprinted for a background check to renew my Maine Guides license. A program initiated to guarantee that every Maine Guide is a good person to spend time with.
