Gulf Shores Fishing

Gulf Shores Fishing

Gulf Shores, Alabama started off as a fishing village in the early 1800’s. With the addition of the Intracoastal Waterway in 1937, the opening of Gulf State Park in 1939, and home of the National Shrimp Festival since 1971, Gulf Shores has grown as a popular tourist attraction. Gulf Shores offers excellent inshore and offshore fishing for many anglers.

Fishing the inshore waters around Gulf Shores allows anglers to catch many different species of fish, including Black Drum, Bluefish, Flounder, Pompano, Redfish, Sheepshead, Tarpon, and Whiting. Red Drum and Speckled Trout are around any many numbers most of the year.

Nearshore and offshore of Gulf Shores has the world’s largest artificial reef system that is home to some of the best Grouper and Snapper fishing in the world. Bottom fishing these reefs will produce good catches of a variety of reef fish, including Gag Grouper, King Mackerel, Lane Snapper, Mangrove Snapper (Black Snapper), Red Grouper, Red Snapper, and Vermillion Snapper. There is also excellent King Mackerel fishing over the reefs much of the year and Amberjacks, Barracuda, and Sharks are also frequently caught.

Fishing offshore of Gulf Shores provides anglers with lots of Mahi-mahi and Wahoo. Around the rigs and along the edge of the Desoto Canyon, there is good tuna fishing, including Blackfins, Skipjacks, Yellowfins, and occasionally Bluefins. There is also good billfishing with Blue Marlin, Sailfish, Swordfish, and White Marlin to be caught.
