Lake Macquarie Fishing

Lake Macquarie Fishing

Lake Macquarie is a saltwater lagoon in New South Wales, Australia that has a surface area of 42.5 square miles. The channels Swansea Channel and Lake Entrance connect this lagoon to the sea. There are bridges that can lift to allow yachts and other boats passage between the lagoon and the sea. Lake Macquarie has small sandy islets with some of them located near the mouth of the lagoon. The average depth of Lake Macquarie is 26 feet, and the maximum depth is 49 feet. The Awabakal people lived in this area for thousands of years and referred to the lagoon as "Awaba," meaning "plain surface." Captain William Reid made an accidental landing in 1800 when he mistook the area as Hunter River. It was nicknamed Reids Mistake until being named after Governor Lachlan Macquarie in 1826.

Lake Macquarie fishing could deliver Australian Salmon, Bluefish, Bream, Dusky Flathead, Luderick, Mulloway, Sand Whiting or Yellowtail Kingfish. The Swansea Channel is a good area to target Bream, Dusky Flathead, Luderick and Whiting. When the weather is cooler, Australian Salmon like to hang out in the channel. Yellowtail Kingfish are commonly found near the bridge and the area where the channel connects to the lagoon. There are artificial reefs in the lagoon to boost Lake Macquarie fishing opportunities. You can go fishing here any time of the year.

Nearshore fishing around Lake Macquarie can produce good mackerel and snapper much of the year. Further offshore you will find lots of tuna and billfish. Black Marlin, Blue Marlin, and Swordfish are not uncommon, making Lake Macquarie fishing some of the best in the world.
