You know you are lucky when your street number and age are the same. At my current number it is cause for reflection. I have been incredibly fortunate. First I lucked out when I married Argy. We took the leap in our twenties. Neither knowing what the future might hold but leaping right in. Together we have accomplished much. First we have two grea...

A rainy morning today has me at my desk catching up on office work. Hard to imagine but the summer season is half gone! We had a hot spell that made early afternoons uncomfortable and likely will have another. But as sure as the sun is rising a little later every day we are headed toward my favorite time of the year.

Over the years I have been fortunate to have a few interns. Supposedly they were here to learn but usually I learned a great deal from them. First was Chris Taylor then Brynna and now Eben. Unlike the first two Eben thinks that he would like ot be a guide. Here is Eben's introduciton.

Here we are in the middle of our summer season here in Maine. The weather has been as you would expect warm inland (even hot at times) and much cooler on the saltwater. That point was made yesterday with a family from North Carolina on a Scenic Boat trip.

This this morning my client had good success casting surface poppers for stripers. The interesting part of the morning came well after sun up when we came on this group of seals working cooperatively to trap a school of pogies. I have seen two or three seals working together in the past but this was a group of between 12 and 15 and as you can see...

It's important to stay hydrated on our trips. Being outside in the sun and wind can be dehydrating which can make a morning on the water less enjoyable. Many years ago I started providing reusable water bottles with the Maine Outdoors logo. This served two purposes: helping to keep you hydrated and reducing the use of disposable plastic bottles.

I was pleased to be home mowing the lawn Saturday afternoon when I saw a thunderstorm building toward Camden and Rockland. We've had a few thundershowers in the last week and at least twice they moved east to west eventually soaking us here in Union. Thunderstorms in late June and early July are not unusual but the east-to-west movement is unusual...

I am in the business of creating memories and to hear clients tell it I have more than a little success. But this is a story about one of my memories and not even about fishing. It is an outdoor story sort of.

I’ve been on several of our local ponds and the Kennebec River in the last week or so. Water temps have finally started to go up after a long slow start.

Thank you for the Maine Tourism Association Hall of Fame Award and all of the kind words. I am sorry for the delay we were on a trip to California last week and yes I did hire a guide and spend a day fly fishing for bass fish. First off being part of the hall of fame means that you are of a certain age.  I knew that I might get to that age but I d...

The 2024 season is well underway with a few trips and many more in my calendar for the next few months. As things get started I reflect on how I am fortunate that out local rivers lakes and coastal waters teem with a diverse array of fish species. From pickerel to perch bass and stripers these aquatic creatures are not only a source of recreation...

Balancing well enough to strut up the boat trailer without taking an unexpected plunge. Over the years folks have marveled at my seemingly effortless boat-loading skills. Truth be told it's become second nature to me. The real magic? Stepping out of the boat onto the trailer's frame finding my sea legs as I stroll to the hitch and gracefully dismo...

Yes it is snowing this morning this is my view out the office window as I start my workday. A good old-fashioned snowstorm with maybe 6 inches on the ground so far. The wind howled out of the east last night but has dropped off this morning with only occasional 20 mile per hour gusts. The forecast calls for snow on and off for the next couple of d...

Looking at the forecast and the various weather maps it appears we are likely to experience a significant snowstorm this week. Despite having only a little snow all winter it seems last season has decided that it is not done with us even if it is well into spring.

March in Maine often surprises us with a dusting of white reminding us that winter still holds its grip even as spring tiptoes closer. We've been relishing the warmer days a welcome relief after a winter that seemed hesitant to show its face. But don't let a late-season snowstorm dampen your spirits; spring is surely on its way even if Saturday's...

This morning was breezy and cloudy with the threat of rain on the horizon. Very similar to last Monday with water temperatures having fallen a little further. Last week my clients did well on bass pickerel and pike. I had nothing on my calendar and decided to take advantage of the conditions and see if I could do as well as they did. Keep in mind...
