Hooking Up Anglers Since 2011.
I fished the Coronado Islands on Monday, looking to stay on the fish for upcoming guide trips. I got to the Middle Grounds at about 8:45 to overcast conditions, beautiful blue 61 degree water and hardly any other boat traffic. Boat traffic can be the key to getting on these fish. I found a few fish on the meter and went after them with sardines. After about an hour I put the first fish on the deck, a nice 25 pounder. Shortly after that I saw birds start working nearby and ran over there and deployed the surface iron, a Salas 7x blue/white. It only took a few casts before I got landed another nice fish. After the surface action stopped I went back to soaking 'dines and put a couple more on the boat.
The sea lions were glued to my boat, but didn't take any of my fish. The trick is have some squid or mackerel ready to go when you're fighting a fish, and to toss it in the opposite direction to keep them distracted while you land the fish. All baited fish came on 30 pound mono with 25 pound fluorocarbon leader and a #2 circle hook. The iron fish came on a 9' jig stick with 50 pound mono. I found most of the fish on the ridge in the Middle Grounds. Weekdays remain the best time to go, low boat traffic is key.
