Deschutes River Redside Trout & Summer Steelhead Report
————————————————————————————
Summer Steelhead Report:

Steelhead “catching” is fair,.. give or take a day here and there where no one touches a thing. However, it seems like there are those days where someone finds a pod of fish and gets some good action for a couple of hours. Yes, there are some steelhead around, you just have to spend a little extra time to find them. So there is a silver lining on that cloud.

Okay, so the fishing is a little tough, but remember, it’s fall, and it is splendid! Cool nights, warm days, and the peacefulness of being in a beautiful place.

Deschutes Red Side Trout Report:

Trout fishing is alright. Mornings are slow, it picks up during the day and is best from about 3 to 6 pm. Fish those classic runs and riffles we all love to fish. Of course, if they’re not looking up, fish Nymphs and Wet flies in fast deep runs with lots of structor. You will need to add weight to get your flies deep enough to help your odds.

We are seeing light hatches of BWO’s and Pale Evening Duns. Most of the time, you will see BWO’s hatch in the late morning hours. Look for Pale Evening Duns after 3pm.

The Net Spinning Caddis are hatching in fair numbers from afternoon until about 5pm.
Seeing a few of the Igloo Case Builders, and the Fall Caddis are finally hatching. Not in great numbers, but enough for the trout to start paying attention.

Pattern suggestions: Fall Caddis Pupa, 8’s, Lightening Bugs, 16’s, Rainbow Warriors, 16’s &18’s. Hares Ear Soft Hackle, 14’s & 16’s, Prince Nymphs, 10’s and 12’s, Sparkle Pupa’s, 14’s & 16’s, Soft Hackles, 14’s, CDC BH Pheasant tails, 14’s, & 16’s Double bead caddis, 14’s and 16’s. We will show you some other new patterns that have just arrived that we think will help change the minds of some of those stubborn red side trout.

River level is 4,010 CFS and the water temperature is 56 degrees.

I encourage you to click on “Monthly Hatch Chart” to see what you can expect during this month. Its also a great way to get a sneak preview of hatches in the months ahead.
