Deschutes River Redside Trout & Summer Steelhead Report
————————————————————————————
Update on Long Hollow Fire:
Dear Everyone,
Long Hollow Fire - 7/27/18 Update

As many of you know we have a fire on and adjacent to the Lower Deschutes, burning in Segment 3 and impacting access into Segments 3 & 4.  The Long Hollow Fire was almost 17,000 acres as of this evening.  It started SE of Dufur and burned to the southeast toward the Lower Deschutes.  Attached is the current update from the Public Information Officers from the Incident Command Team managing the fire.  In addition to the updates provided by the team I wanted to provide some further specific information:

Location of Fire In Regard to the River and Impacts in Corridor:  As of around 4:00 to 5:00pm this afternoon the fire jumped the river in segment 3 around the Jones Canyon area and possibly in at least one other place.  The fire was burning most of the day on the west side of the river between river miles 30 to 26 including Ferry Canyon.  No recreation sites had been impacted/damaged as of 5:00pm.  Unfortunately, as the fire continues to grow and new information comes in the information I share may be outdated.  The House and Historical structures at the base of  Ferry Canyon were impacted by the fire and the latest reports indicate the house and outbuildings were lost.  As we know more about this I will share with everyone.  Our office will be working in conjunction with our partners to assess the damage to facilities and recreation sites throughout Segments 3 when it is safe to do so.

Access & Evacuation Levels:  The River Access road and access to all launches from Buckhollow to Macks Canyon are closed and under an Evacuation Level 3 (Go).  This is due to continued concerns for human life and property as the fire burns actively in the river canyon.  Our Sherriff’s Departments and I understand that this is not only an inconvenience to recreationists, but also an economic impact to local businesses and communities.  As soon as it is safe to do so the road and area will be open.  Please understand that dangers of the fire in this area are very real.  Having traveled through much of Segment 4 on Wednesday and seeing first-hand the impacts of the Substation Fire, it is critical to keep everyone but emergency personnel out of the area while it is burning and we have fire on both sides of the river.  Again, as soon as it is safe to do so, the evacuation levels will be lifted and access restored.  Heritage Landing as well as all of Segment 4, except for access to the Macks Canyon Boat Launch, are open.  Anyone recreating near Segments 3 & 4 is asked to please follow the directions of all emergency personnel.

Deschutes Red Side Trout Report:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Fishing is pretty good, Mornings are fishing a little better. Mid day until about 5pm is a nymphing game. After about 6pm it will pick up. Fish those classic runs and riffles we all love to fish. Of course, if they’re not looking up, fish Nymphs and Wet flies in fast deep runs with lots of structor. You will need to add weight to get your flies deep enough to help your odds.

PED’s are hatching from 5 to 7 pm. Very few BWO’s. They hatch between 9am and 1pm. Caddis is the most abundant, make certain you have some in sizes 16's to 20's. Keep a sharp eye cause they’re small and not always that easy to see. Check those little micro back eddies in the foam lines. They often accumulate in those small areas.

Pattern suggestions: Lightening Bugs, 16’s, Rainbow Warriors, 16’s &18’s. Hares Ear Soft Hackle, 14’s & 16’s, Prince Nymphs, 10’s and 12’s, Sparkle Pupa’s, 14’s & 16’s, Soft Hackles, 14’s, CDC BH Pheasant tails, 14’s, & 16’s Double bead caddis, 14’s and 16’s. We will show you some other new patterns that have just arrived that we think will help change the minds of some of those stubborn red side trout.

River level is 3,890 CFS and the water temperature is 59 degrees.

I encourage you to click on “Monthly Hatch Chart” to see what you can expect during this month. Its also a great way to get a sneak preview of hatches in the months ahead.
