Fort Lauderdale on Happy Day Today with Capt. Zsak

Fishing

Steve and Lucinda Ettar, along with their son, Devon, from Colorado spent their holiday vacation in Fort Lauderdale, FL and chartered the Topshotfishing team to do some deep sea big game sport fishing.  Winds were out of the east at 15 mph, temperatures in the low 80’s, blue skies, while the weather up north is frigid with snow.

Fifteen minutes after leaving the dock, lines were in 120 ft of water at the sea buoy in Fort Lauderdale, FL, which is located 1.8 miles from shore.  Due to our extreme drop off, you do not have to venture too far off shore - ¼ of a mile more and you will find yourself in 500 ft of water as it continues to increase in depth.  We started off with two #8 plainers with double hooked Bonito strips and sea witches in front- one with a pink and blue and the other with a blue and white.  For surface baits we went with two Bonito strips and two Ballyhoos.

I zigged zagged back and forth over the reefs ranging from 80 ft. out to 150 ft. of water heading towards one of our 34 artificial wrecks we have in Fort Lauderdale.  While trolling in this area we pulled the hooks on three fish.  I noticed a couple of birds working off shore so I headed towards them.  As I got closer to the birds, the right long outrigger came down.  Devon was our angler and he reeled in an 8 lb. Mahi Mahi.  A rip was forming, and it looked very productive, so I put up two kites with two live Goggle Eyes from each kite.  As I was sitting hoping for the black shadow to make its appearance, a green hornet appeared on the right short.  Hooked up!!!!! Steve was our angler.  Then another Mahi Mahi appeared on the left short – Hooked up again – and Lucinda was our angler for this one.  The two Mahi Mahi’s were jumping out of the water, lines tangling – it became a Chinese fire drill.  The anglers brought the fish to the side of the boat while Ian, our mate, gaffed the fish and put them in the fish box.

With time running out, it was time to head back to Bahia Mar – no Sailfish but plenty of Mahi Mahi’s for dinner.  The anglers retired in the a/c salon for the ride back to the dock at Bahia Mar 801 Seabreeze Blvd. Fort Lauderdale 33316.
