Fort Lauderdale Fishing with Topshotfishing and Capt. Zsak

Leland Bartlett chartered the Topshotfishing team to do some deep sea big game sport fishing in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.  He invited his clients, Mike Masi, William Bennett and Luna Castellani, to enjoy this fishing expedition with him.  As the anglers were welcomed aboard the boat by the Topshotfishing Team, I asked them what type of fish they would be interested in targeting.  Leland said they would like to have a fish cook-out; therefore, edible fish is what they were interested in.

Fifteen/twenty minutes after leaving the dock, lines were in 120 ft. of water at the sea buoy in Fort Lauderdale, 1.8 miles from shore.  If you venture off another ¼ of a mile, you will find yourself in 500 ft. of water due to the extreme drop off in Fort Lauderdale.  We put down two plainers – one #8 and the other a #6.  The long plainer had a 3 ½ blue reflector drone spoon and the other had a pink and blue sea witch in front of a double hooked Bonitos strip.  For surface baits we went with three Ballyhoos and a daisy chain teaser.  As we trolled the reefs ranging from 90 ft. out to 175 ft. of water, all the anglers took turns bringing in their fish.

In the past few days, the Wahoo action has been good to fair, so I went out to 250 ft. of water where there was a color change going from a clean blue to a deep indigo blue, a good avenue to search for a Wahoo.  The strike came on the long plainer – the plainer tripped but no hook up.   Our mate, Dave, immediately reset the plainer and the predator returned.  The spider line exited the reel and the rod tip bounced up and down erratically.  Does anybody want to take bet that it’s a Wahoo??  Leland jumped into the fighting chair to subdue the fish.  After about twelve minutes, the long slender striped fish appeared on the surface – Wahoo!!!  Dave, our mate gaffed the 24 lb. Wahoo and said, “Welcome aboard from the Topshotfishing team”.  The razor sharp teeth opened and closed its mouth, while thrashing around the cockpit.  Wahoos are the fastest fish in the ocean clocked at 64 mph and are extremely dangerous if not handled correctly.

From there we kept trolling around and caught a total of one Wahoo, one Kingfish, one Barracuda, one Tuna and 19 Bonitos.

With fish for tonight’s dinner, it was time to head back to the dock.  The anglers retired into the a/c salon and enjoyed the relaxing trip back to the dock at Bahia Bar located at 801 Seabreeze Blvd. Fort Lauderdale 33316.
