Fort Lauderdale Fishing with Topshotfishing and Capt. Zsak

James and Christina Smith from Orlando chartered the Topshotfishing team to do some deep sea big game sport fishing in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.   We had winds out of the east at 7 mph with temperatures in the low 90’s.  As James and Christina boarded the boat, I asked them what they were interested in catching on this trip, and James responded something big and something for the dinner table.

Fifteen minutes after leaving the dock, lines were in 120 ft. of water at the sea buoy in Fort Lauderdale, 1.8 miles from shore.  I headed towards one of the 36 artificial wrecks we have in Fort Lauderdale, ranging in 65 ft. of water out to 420 ft.  These artificial wrecks consist of numerous types of vessels as large as 500 ft. to smaller ones, as well as barges and oil rigs.  These artificial wrecks attract the bait fish and in return the predators are not too far away.

We started trolling with one #8 plainer with a 3 ½ blue reflector drone spoon.  For surface baits we had two Ballyhoos and two Bonito strips and a daisy chain teaser.  James and Chris took turns bringing in their catches which consisted of 5 Kingfish, 6 Bonitos and 2 Barracudas.

From there James wanted to try his luck for some Mahi Mahi’s so we ventured off 8 miles.  With no luck, I decided to catch something big for him – hopefully a Shark – so I headed to an artificial wreck located in 393 ft. of water.  We put out three Shark baits– one surface, one midrange and one bottom.   After a half hour wait, the midrange rod was hooked up as line peeled off the 80 International Reel.  James jumped into the fighting chair to subdue his catch.  After a forty minute battle, the Hammerhead Shark surfaced.  Dave, our mate, wired the Shark to the side of the boat for picture taking, and the 7 ft. Hammerhead Shark was released to fight again.

As it was time to head back to the dock, the anglers retired into the well appreciated a/c salon and enjoyed the relaxing trip back to the dock at Bahia Bar located at 801 Seabreeze Blvd. Fort Lauderdale 33316.
