Orizaba Wreck

 | By Seamus on 4/22/2011 11:42:08 PM | Views (1299)

Built for the Pacific Steam Navigation Co in Britain, RMS Orizaba was a Royal Mail Ship that played a key role in establishing the tradition of Orient Line, which named all its ships with the letter 'O'. It had a sister ship named RMS Oroya.

Unfortunately, on 16 February 1905, the ship was wrecked off Rockingham, Western Australia, when its captain lost his bearings due to the smog of bushfire smoke obscuring the coast during the approach to Fremantle. The ship ran aground in 6.1 meters (20 ft) of water on Five Fathom Bank, located west of Garden Island. Despite the mishap, all 160 people on board were safely evacuated.

The incident was significant as RMS Orizaba was one of the largest ships to be wrecked in Australian waters. Although Fremantle lacked the necessary equipment to salvage the ship, the salvors managed to remove most of its cargo, fittings, and fixtures before abandoning it. The bell of the ship was discovered by a salvor who bought it in 1870.

Today, the wreck of the 6077-ton steamship Orizaba remains lying on the Five Fathom Bank, just a few minutes by boat from the Point Peron boat ramp. The site, stretching over 130 meters from bow to stern, ranges from 6 to 11 meters in depth.
