Cape May Fishing

Cape May Fishing

As a prime area for fishing, people have been fishing in Cape May for hundreds of years. The Lenni Lenape tribe had a habit of fishing in this area during the summer. Commercial fishing became popular in Cape May in the 1600s and has continued to be a mainstay over the centuries. Cape May has ranked among the top 25 commercial fishing ports in the US. The waters are full of not just fish but also lobster and scallops. Because Cape May has beautiful beaches, surf fishing is also popular type of fishing here. Cape May fishing has a lot to offer.

Inshore fishing Cape May, Striped Bass is one of the most common type of fish caught. You could also Spotted Seatrout, Black Drum, Flounder, Red Drum, Sheepshead, and Weakfish (Gray Trout). Nearshore, there are lots of bottom fish like Black Sea Bass, Porgy, and Snapper. There are also good fishing for Pollock, Tautog, Cod, and Haddock.

Fishing offshore of Cape May you can find lots of Tuna. False Albacore and Yellowfin Tuna are the most popular, but lots of Bluefin Tuna are caught each year as well. Further out to the canyons, billfish such as Blue Marlin and White Marlin are common. Sword fishing is also good in the canyons, as well as Tilefish and Wreckfish.
