Lake Hartwell is a 56,000-acre freshwater lake, with 962 miles of shoreline, on the border between Georgia and South Carolina. The Hartwell Dam was constructed in 1962, creating this reservoir and making it one of the largest recreation lakes in the southeastern region of the US. Lake Hartwell is named after Nancy Hart, a woman who turned the tables on British troops that invaded her property during the American Revolutionary War. Because of frequent flooding in the area before construction of the lake, the abandoned town of Andersonville is now underwater. Many of these ruins, as well as lots of fish attractors were set up in the lake, providing good fishing year-round.
Lake Hartwell fishing offers opportunities to catch over 40 different types of fish. The most commonly caught species are Bream, Catfish, Largemouth Bass, Smallmouth Bass and Walleye. Other types of fish you could catch while fishing Lake Hartwell include Carp, Gar, Shiners, Trout and Warmouth. One of the largest fish caught at the lake was a 66-pound Flathead Catfish in 2010. Striped Bass is a popular species to target at Lake Hartwell and has delivered some amazing catches, such as the record 59-pound, eight-ounce beast in 2002. If you visit Lake Hartwell in winter, the best fish to target are Brown Trout, Catfish, Crappie, Hybrid Bass and Striped Bass.
