Montauk, New York is home of the largest commercial and recreational fishing fleet in New York. It is also the location that Frank Mundas, who is said to have inspired the character Quint in the movie Jaws, started offering fishing charter trips for bluefish and sharks in 1951. While “Monster Fishing” in 1986, he and Donnie Braddick caught a 3,427 pound Great White Shark that still holds the record for the largest fish of any kind caught by a rod and reel.
Montauk is probably best known for its excellent Striped Bass fishing. The highlight is usually in the Fall when huge schools are feeding near shore and sometimes are so thick that the water will look like it is boiling. Surf and Fly fishermen enjoy catching these bass and the schools of False Albacore that run along the beaches, Bottom fishing around Montauk will produce Blackfish (Tautog), Cod, Flounder, Fluke, and Porgy.
During the Summer and early Fall, the offshore action off Montauk provides excellent Tuna fishing with Bluefin, Yellowfin, Albacore, and Big Eye Tuna. Mahi-Mahi (dolphinfish) are also plentiful in the late summer and a few Blue Marlin are caught every year.
