Sebastian Fishing

Sebastian Fishing

Sebastian has a long history of fishing with the Ais Indians using the area for both subsistence and recreation. In 1715, a hurricane sunk the Spanish Plate Fleet that was carrying valuable items in these waters. Treasure hunters recovered about $300,000 worth of the valuables in 1988.

Featuring a river and a lagoon, the Sebastian Inlet attracted early settlers to the area. The St. Sebastian River meanders along the western boundary while the Indian River lagoon borders the eastern end. Commercial fishing in Sebastian started around the 1880s, which was when the first 40 settlers migrated here. By the end of the 19th century, Sebastian was considered a fishing village. Rich in history amd great fishing, Sebastian is a top fishing destination on the East Coast.

Sebastian fishing offers a wide variety of opportunities, including inshore, offshore, nearshore and freshwater. The most frequent catches are spotted seatrout, mahi-mahi, red drum, Spanish mackerel and sailfish. Other types of fish in Sebastian include snook, Florida pompano and bluefish.

Sebastian fishing is known for having some of the largest snook. May to September is good for snook, whereas the beginning of the year is great for catching redfish. You might see the water turn a golden red color when a large number of redfish gather near the surface, a beautiful sight to see.
