As we get deeper into July we can look back and claim this year’s hex hatch as a strange one. It started much later than normal and when the bugs did come off they came off quite heavily. With a string of cool evenings some days there was both a spinner fall and emergence at […]

Water levels on the local rivers are falling back into shape. While they are a higher than normal for this time of year they are fishable and have a little stain to them – almost ideal. Water temperatures are still cool due to cool nights and a lack or significant warmth and sunshine the past […]

The weather can’t make up it’s mind – it goes from cool spring-like weather to full-on summer then back to cool and rainy. And the trout can’t decide whether they want to play our game or not. Trout fishing remains challenging on both the Manistee and Au Sable Rivers. Hatches have been decent but most […]

With May well underway it seems that spring is catching up but is still behind on both land and on the water as the morels leeks and trillium carpet the forest floor and the trout ignore the emerging mayflies. Steelhead are essentially all done save for a straggler or two still in river systems – […]

With trout opener and April behind us we move from steelhead fishing to trout fishing on the local rivers. While there are still a few steelhead in Betsie and Manistee there are more fish dropping back than there are fresh fish moving upstream. The others are pretty much preoccupied with spawning. Water temps are right […]

Hex nymphs are important to both steelhead and trout anglers alike. Using materials with motion and natural colors lean how to tie this realistic pattern with step-by-step instructions and use them when fishing for steelhead and also in the summer during the Hex Hatch.

With the first day of Spring we are reminded that it’s a transition into the new season not the flip of a switch. Since last week’s report a lot of snow has melted which brought the river levels up and added some color to it. The water temps are still in the low to mid […]

To say it was a long cold winter would be to misrepresent that past few months and the multiple polar vortexes hours of shoveling snow and time spent indoors thinking about fishing. With mid-March thankfully comes some sunshine longer days warmer temperatures and opportunities to shake cabin fever by fishing for steelhead. There is still […]

As we cross the mid-point of December anglers are finding fishing conditions to be in step with the season. Cold temps for a month and some snow have the fish in a winter mode and sitting in the slower water and eating a little less aggressively than we got accustomed to the previous months. A […]

With November coming to an end it is apparent that fall itself ended a few weeks ago. Winter temps and some snow have been the norm with air temps below freezing as water temperatures hover around 40 degrees on the local rivers. There are steelhead in all the rivers but they are spread throughout the […]

What happened to Fall? The last five days have been sub-freezing with some snow each day helping to drop the water temps and put the fish into a little bit of a funk. Once temps stabilize the steelhead will do the same and begin to eat again as they have been a little grumpy lately. […]

Steelhead season is in full swing on the big river.. We have been catching some nice fish. Mostly running spawn on bottom (drift fishing) but the floats should take off here pretty soon.. The post October 18th appeared first on Steelhead Hunter Guide Service.

With a week of October behind us it’s looking and feeling like fall. Trees have started to turn color and so have the salmon. There are still a number of salmon in the local rivers – Betsie Manistee Platte but its safe to say we are past the stage of bright fresh fish. Most of […]

At the mid-point of September it has felt more like the middle of summer. After a lot of rain the first part of the month the rivers came up and have since come down. The Betsie still has the “Betsie Stain” to it but reveals that there just aren’t as many salmon around as we […]
