American shad are moving up the Delaware River in vast quantities in order to spawn, and waiting anglers are enjoying steady action with those game fish that don't feed in the river, but instinctively strike small lures in their path. Dave Perruso of Palmer Township, Pa. was catching and releasing shad from his aluminum skiff anchored ahead of the railroad bridge at Phillipsburg, where the Lehigh River flows into the Delaware, long before Nick Kolodiy of Brick and I arrived around 10 a.m. Perruso had released 29 before picking us up at the Phillipsburg launching ramp, and said we'd be hooked up within minutes of hooking on to his anchor buoy. That's exactly what happened after flutter spoons were lowered on downriggers. My first shad was a round-bellied (full of roe) 23-incher (about 6 pounds), that would have had a shot at a daily prize in the shad tournament starting Wednesday. After that it was pretty steady action on the small lure that consists of a tiny flattish piece of metal at the head of a long-shanked gold hook. By the time Perruso took us back to the ramp at 1:30 for the long trip back to the Shore, his clicker was up to 73 releases, while another totaling shad lost was up to 26. Perruso was determined to get to 100 releases, so he returned to his buoy and fished until late in the afternoon for a final release tally of 106. Even at that, Perruso wasn't high hook as the boats alongside (with multiple anglers, and also out all day) were up to 130 for Shad Pappy II, and 122 for Rusty Balls 2. Since the smallest shad are still 3 to 4 pounds, that's a lot of action on light tackle.
Striped bass cooperated for jiggers off the northern Shore once again tiday. Capt. Rob Semkewicz of the Sea Hunter from Atlantic Highlands said it started slowly, but ended great with many limits. Most were jigged, with a few caught on clams.
Capt. Howard Bogan Jr. got into bass after 10:30 on his Jamaica from Brielle. With a faster drift, it wasn't as good as Monday, when over 100 keepers were jigged, but 55 to 60 legal bass were still caught today. The pool bass was a 24-pounder for Jerry Brown of Telford, Pa.
Large stripers are hitting bunker in Raritan Bay. Vinny Vitale of Katfish Charters in Great Kills said his crew chunked six bass up to 26 pounds Monday night, but only two 21-pounders Tuesday morning even though the predicted dense fog didn't occur.
