Broome catches
A Kimberley double-up this week! Young Ky's barramundi put an end to a slow day of barramundi fishing in one of the creeks with @barrawhisperer, while Tyren made the most of mint conditions earlier this week and reeled in this lovely 68cm bluebone.

Boats

Good Spanish mackerel have been caught north of Broome, while marlin and sailfish have been active 5km or so out from James Price Point. Crews that went out wide caught good numbers of Rankin cod and a few red emperor, but sharks have been out in force so it pays to move around and turn your sounder off when anchoring. You can find some great shark avoidance tips on our webpage by clicking here. At the Fingers, barramundi and threadfin salmon have been caught but the fishing has slowed a little. Mud crabs have also been at the Fingers in reasonable numbers too, while Bidgyadanga and Lagrange have offered barramundi and threadfin salmon as well. In Roebuck Bay tripletail have been caught along the current line and Crab and Dampier creeks have held small barramundi. The weather over the next week is looking great for the boats though so get out there.

Coupla happy chaps! Look around the local creeks long enough in the Kimberley region and you're always in the running to find some of these delicious critters. Order chilli mud crab in Singapore and you'll often pay upwards of $100. Image Credit: @reefchiefaustralia.

Barramundi catches have been good in the Fitzroy River around Langi Crossing, while bigger barra have been caught closer to the ocean from Willare Bridge towards Wilhems Pool. Bigger barramundi around the metre mark have been taking gold Bomber hard-bodied lures at Camballin and The Barrage. There’s been little action in the creeks close to town, but out at Quandong Point bluebone catches have been great. Entrance Point has rewarded lure casters with queenfish and trevally at low tide, while the Port Jetty also offered the same species. The Town Beach Jetty has produced bream, javelinfish, trevally and small queenfish, while whiting have been active at Cable Beach.

Big thanks to the crew from Tackle World Broome for their tips! Make sure you pay them a visit for the best gear and advice for your next fishing trip.
Exmouth catches
If even the @onstrikecharters crew are saying this is one of the prettiest blue marlin they've ever seen, it's safe to take their word for it!

Boats

Black marlin around 20-40kg and sailfish have been active in 50-130m depths and among the bycatch were tuna and dolphinfish. Wahoo have also been about in big numbers with 10-15kg fish being taken on Nomad Madmacs at slightly faster trolling speeds than for billfish (around 8-9 knots). Spanish mackerel started to move closer in to shore but Helby Bank remained a consistent spot for them. Staying out west, big cod have been taken in 200m depths while in 120m small ruby snapper and goldband snapper have been the main catches. Right in close, small Rankin cod and spangled emperor have been in good numbers. The Muirons held good numbers of coral trout, while out towards Long Island red emperor to 5kg have been caught in 45m depths. Tuna and Spanish mackerel were also caught around the islands. In Exmouth Gulf the tuna have been very skittish, taking only very small metal slices, but shark and school mackerel were quite aggressive. Exmouth Reef has produced blue-lined emperor, Charlie Court and spangled emperor with squid, occy baits and Nomad Squidtrex vibes or white soft plastics working well. These species have also been at Cooper and Camplin shoals which have been heavily fished recently, so burley may be needed here. Fortunately, shark numbers in the Gulf have been low. Squid catches are slowly improving in the Gulf for those on the drift. This week is looking rather calm out on the water so you're in luck if you want to send the boat out.

A shout out to the @bluelightningcharters crew who kicked off their first charter in the Montebellos recently which saw some specky species reeled in, including this African pompano for this lucky angler along with plenty of coral trout, spangos and many more.

Shore-based

Bonefish have been taking flies on the flats south of Tantabiddi near Pilgramunna, while at Tantabiddi spangled emperor and whiting catches have been good. Nice catches of spangled emperor have come from Mildura Wreck with one angler having a great session, landing three over 55cm on a 100mm Halco Slidog. At the Lighthouse, spangled emperor have shown a liking for white soft plastic paddletail lures. Good catches of whiting have come from Learmonth and Bundegi as well as out towards Wapet Creek. Small pieces of prawn and Bassday Sugapen lures have been effective on them.  When the hardyhead schools have been tightly bunched along the boat ramp at Bundegi it has often indicated plenty of action on small queenfish and trevally. Mangrove jack have been caught at Learmonth Jetty and in the town marina, with half-mulie baits working well on them. Inside the marina, bream, javelinfish and Charlie Court have been the main species, while the outside rock wall produced school mackerel. Bluebone have also been taken from the outside rock wall on crab baits or Chasebaits Crusty Crab lures. A few flathead have been around the mouth of Wapet Creek and inside the creek mangrove jack have been caught on suspending hard-bodied lures.

These great tips were courtesy of the friendly team at Tackle World Exmouth. Swing by their store for the best advice and gear ahead of your next trip!

Kalbarri catches
Leigh and @nickihuntfishing jumped on the pelagic action this week which saw a good bump in the numbers of Spanish mackerel caught both north and south of Kalbarri. The Shimano Stella 4000 made easy work of reeling in this speedster.

Boats

Swells and poor water clarity have slowed things down on the pelagic front, although amateur crayfishers reported seeing Spanish mackerel jumping fairly close in this week. Spanish mackerel have been in better numbers at Lucky Bay where dinghy anglers had success trolling for them using deeper diving lures. Bottom fishers have done well on pink snapper and baldchin groper at the Sand Patch, while close in near the cliffs was also a hotspot for them. The weather is looking inviting for the boats this weekend with lower winds expected but the swell will start to tick upwards from Saturday morning.

Shore-based

Wittecarra Creek and Red Bluff fished well for tailor, with an angler at Wittecarra surprised by his bycatch of threadfin salmon. At Frustrations and further northwards big mulloway were landed and when the swells were down at Wagoe, balloon fishers did well on Spanish mackerel. Pink snapper have been caught from the cliffs when they have been safe to fish from, but make sure you wear a lifejacket and fish with a friend. Dredging in the Murchison River has really fired up yellowfin whiting action with plenty of good fish being taken from the Sand Spit. Mud crabs were still being targeted in the Murchison and nice bream and cod have been caught around the marina.

Shout out to Dean from Kalbarri Sports and Dive for his tips! Feel free to venture into his store to ask for advice if you're wetting a line around Kalbarri!
Geraldton catches
The @halcotackle Slidog 105H worked wonders for Luke out in the Abrolhos Islands this week, with this healthy dolphinfish coming over the side. The moorings and fishing infrastructure at the Abrolhos Islands is also set to receive an $8.1 million facelift to help boost tourism, you can find more details on this by clicking here.

Boats

Dinghy fishers around Point Moore have landed school and broad-barred Spanish mackerel and some solid tailor, while squid also have been active when the water has been clear. Blue swimmer crab activity has picked up as well, with a mixture of chicken necks and mulies squashed together working nicely as it's quite oily. Sloppy conditions have kept a lot of boats in close but one crew that went out wide did well on dhufish in 40m depths. If you're thinking of ducking out in the boats, Saturday morning until around 3:00pm is the time to do it before the higher winds and swell return for the remainder of the week.

Shore-based

Weed and a strong surge made beach fishing difficult and there has been little tailor activity to speak off. As a consolation, a few metre-plus mulloway have been landed north of town. Whiting have been the most consistent species caught this week and they have been in good numbers from the rock walls on the outside of Fishing Boat Harbour and out towards the Batavia Coast Marina, with sizes ranging from 20-32cm. Prawn baits have worked best on them but a few anglers have been targeting them with small bladed lures, which often account for bigger models. The rock walls in town and on the north side of the Batavia Coat Marina have held a few squid.

Thanks to the team at Geraldton Sports Centre for their tips! They will happily provide you with great gear and the solid advice for your next fishing trip.
Lancelin catches

Boats

The fishing has been pretty good around the bay. Squid have been in great numbers, with that late afternoon to sunset period tending to be the prime time to target them, while the weed banks have produced skippy and snook in good numbers. The southern shallows of the bay has seen big schools of herring gathering and they have recated well when burley was used, with small Halco Twisty lures working nicely. Good-sized sand whiting have been caught north of the bay, with small strips of squid or prawn working best for bait. Sneaking out behind the island to find shelter from the east winds found a few snapper along the 8-10m edge and an unweighted mulie on gang hooks works well for this approach. Saturday is expecting lower south-westerly winds with a 2m swell, while Sunday should have the same swell and south-easterly winds picking up slightly. Tuesday and Wednesday morning are looking better for the boats at this stage.

Shore-based

There was a pretty decent increase in mulloway caught along the local beaches, which coincided with the new moon phase. Lots of small baitfish along the coast has made finding the tailor a little easier, just look out for the tell tale bust ups with the bite time seemingly an all day affair. Casting out weighted mulies on gang hooks works well, but for the best chance of catching the larger specimens, try CiD Sprat, Shiversticks, or good old fashioned Halco Twisty which can all be launched out further. A good burly trail has been getting some variety off the beach with mixed catches of tailor, herring, tarwhine, skippy and some very solid sand whiting.

A big Recfishwest thanks to Peter Fullarton for his tips on what's biting around Lancelin each week! If you want Peter to put you on to the fish directly, make sure you check out his Tailored Treks Tours page. Always a great time and Peter knows the best spots around Lancelin like the back of his hand.

Esperance catches

Boats

Nannygai to 3.5kg have been caught at Boxer Island, while Samsonfish up to 20kg have come from Fury Rocks. Big queen snapper have been landed at Observatory Island and Douglas Patch, while sizeable blue groper have been caught at Hope Island. All the lumps out wide have held huge numbers of big breaksea cod. Wylie Bay held nice King George whiting and flathead, while big sand whiting have come from Observatory Island in 12m depths. Plenty of squid have also been caught in 12m at Cook Rocks, while squid have also been plentiful in the 4m depths in Esperance Bay. Saturday morning should hold a great window if you wish to duck out in calm conditions.

Shore-based

Gummy sharks have been abundant at Munglinup and lots of salmon and skippy to 5kg have hit the sand at Roses Beach. The 10-Mile Lagoon has held big flathead and nice-sized salmon, while skippy and sand whiting have been caught at Blue Haven Beach. The Town Jetty has fired for squid, while Taylor Street Jetty has produced big garfish at night. Dunns Beach held mulloway and big salmon, while Bandy Creek Boat Harbour fished well for flathead, flounder and King George whiting. At Woody Lake bream to 40cm have been taking lures and baits.

Hats off to the very knowledgeable team at Southern Sports & Tackle for their tips! These guys love their fishing as well, so make sure you swing by their store for the best gear and advice before wetting a line around Esperance.

Great Southern catches
Gido @gidos_fishing_adventures scored a massive upgrade to his PB land-based yellowtail kingfish this week on the south coast. After showing up in the burley trail with no interest in his soft plastic, Gido swapped over to a live bait and it didn't take long to hook up. After a long battle which almost saw his line snap multiple times on the barnacles, he finally got it up the rocks and took the fish home for a delicious family feed. You can watch Gido's latest action here and make sure you check out our safe fishing webpage before you attempt to do what Gido does.

Boats

Conditions haven’t been flash this week and even King George Sound has been ruled out at times, but when the odd weather window has popped up the sound has offered King George whiting, herring and a few squid. Around Bald Head, a few crews came across schools of bonito. There might be a brief window opening up on Sunday with lower winds but expect the swell to still linger around 2m.

Shore-based

The salmon were going absolutely nuts in the shallows of Cheynes Beach this week (watch the footage here), with Western Angler's Scott Coghlan hooking up to two salmon on the same lure!

The salmon action died down a little and the best spots to target appear to be places known to hold resident fish such as Lowlands, Cheynes, Nanarup and Sand Patch. Ocean Beach near Denmark has held a few as well, but the swells have been a problem. Most anglers targeting salmon have put out a bait such as a herring fillet or mulies and then when a school has passed by they’ve been changing to lures. The beaches around town have been thick with herring and a few tarwhine have turned up as a bycatch. Emu Point and the town marina have held a few squid, along with heaps of herring and some small skippy. Frenchman Bay was the pick of the squid spots. It has also held lots of herring and a mix of small King George and sand whiting. Most spots out of the wind have been worth a crack for whiting, with a feed of herring almost guaranteed. Rain has given the King and Kalgan rivers a good flush, making bream easier to target in the lower reaches.

Cheers to the Trailblazers Albany crew for their tips this week! Swing by their store if you're after some top gear and advice ahead of your next fishing trip. Remember, you'll also catch just as many fish off the beaches than the rocks and it is always much safer to go with this option on the south coast.

South-West catches
If you're wanting to know where the salmon schools are in the South-West, just try and find out where @mat.kleczkowski.photography is hanging around and you'll find them. He's taken some incredible snaps since they started running so make sure you give his page a follow to keep up with the action.

Boats

Big swells restricted boat fishing this week, with even Geographe Bay ruled out at times. Before the rough weather, kayak fishers were getting squid, pink snapper and salmon in Geographe Bay, while dinghy fishers were getting squid, herring and King George whiting. In Bunbury, the estuary has been a good option for boaties and it produced some decent chopper tailor in the 35-40cm range along with herring and juvenile salmon. Both species have usually been caught while trolling, but anchoring up and throwing out half a mulie has also produced good catches. In the outer harbour the 7m+ depths have produced blue swimmer crabs. When weather windows arose it rewarded Bunbury tinnie fishers with pink snapper around the inshore waters, with unweighted mulies on gangs drifting down into the burley trails working best. Given the storm rolling through today, both Saturday and Sunday could hold good numbers of pinkies in close, with lower winds and swell expected across both days.

Shore-based

Skilled fisher @owen.peillon scored the best birthday gift ever after landing this stonker of a pinkie near Busselton. Happy Birthday Owen!

Around town, Back Beach and Bunbury Cut have all offered tailor, herring and whiting. Juvenile salmon have been at Back Beach and bigger models have come by in schools of 20 or 30. A recent fish kill in the Collie River is expected to shut down bream fishing for a few weeks. Snapper fishing has been very good on both sides of town, from Preston and Myalup down to Forrest Beach and Dalyellup. Herring were in big numbers at most beaches too, along with a few chopper tailor. Rough conditions have made fishing for herring and squid a little harder at Busselton Jetty, but at least four big mulloway were landed from the end of the jetty this week. Pink snapper have been caught at Yallingup and Smiths Beach and drone fishers got into them at Quindalup. Salmon fishing has been productive at Injidup, Hamelin Bay, Rocky Point, Eagle Bay, Bunker Bay, Smiths Beach and down at Yeagerup.

Big cheers to Whitey's Tackle & Camping for their top fishing tips as always! If you're in Australind or Bunbury and are keen to wet a line throughout our South-West make sure you ask their very friendly team who love their fishing for advice and stock up on gear at their store. If you're in Busselton, the 2 Oceans Tackle team are also incredibly helpful.

The waist-deep puddles among the rapidly falling water levels at Glen Mervyn Dam have been producing redfin perch up to 45cm and the holed-up fish have not been fussy at what’s been thrown at them, taking all kinds of baits and a wide variety of lures. At Harvey Dam the redfin were a bit fussier, but soft plastics danced around in the deeper sections have worked well. In the Collie River rainbow trout have been caught below the Wellington Dam wall with bait working best, but small flies have also been a good option. Rainbow trout also have been plucked from pools downstream in the Collie River, around Roelands and Burekup.
Mandurah and surrounds
There were good reports of yellowtail kingfish catches this week off Mandurah, with trolling, drifting a pilchard down into burley trails and flicking stickbaits over inshore reefs all producing the goods. Image credit: @tackle_world_miami.

Mandurah

Boats: Most crews have been targeting inshore waters around Bouvard, the Five-Fathom Bank and James Service Reef, where pink snapper catches have picked up although the bigger models have yet to show. Crews that have got out at first light have done well on King George whiting at these locations. Squid have been in good numbers on Five-Fathom, despite the water clarity being poor, and Samsonfish have often turned up in the burley trail. When conditions allowed it, the 40m depths off Dawesville produced dhufish and baldchin groper. Heaps of baitfish have been around at the back of Five-Fathom, but apart from a few small tuna pelagic fishing has been poor. The weather this weekend is looking calm for the boaties albeit for a bit of rain, but we're expecting good numbers of snapper catches to roll in following the storm.

Land-based: Tailor fishing remained average from the local beaches, but there’s been just enough salmon activity to keep fishers interested on both sides of town. Beaches north of town such as Silver Sands, Golden Bay and Madora Bay have produced good mulloway, while drone fishers have been getting stuck into snapper at Tim's Thicket and White Hills. The Mandurah bridges and the Dawesville Cut held heaps of small tarwhine along with herring, skippy and chopper tailor, with the tailor often active under the lights at night. Salmon have been caught at the ocean end of the Cut, while squid fishing has been good in the Cut when there was clearer water at the start of the outgoing tide and halfway through the incoming. Beaches such as Avalon and Falcon could also be worth a crack for squid, while in the estuary bream should be on the move after the recent rain. The entrances of the Serpentine and Murray rivers and local marinas should also be worth targeting.

Thinking of wetting a line around Mandurah? These great tips were courtesy of the super friendly and helpful team at Tackle World Miami so make sure you swing by their store for the best tips and gear before your next fishing trip!

SECRET HARBOUR / PORT KENNEDY / ROCKINGHAM / SAFETY BAY / WARNBRO SOUND

Boats: Dhufish, pink snapper, breaksea cod and baldchin groper have been active in a range of depths behind Garden Island and out towards Five-Fathom Bank, while King George whiting have been inshore of Garden Island and throughout Cockburn and Warnbro Sound. In the 10-15m depths the KG's have been kept company with sand whiting and hordes of herring. The reefs at Garden Island and Stragglers have held a few tailor and quite a few salmon have turned up there as well.  Drifting for squid has been productive around Garden Island and in the Sounds in 10-15m depths. This weekend should be rather flat out on the water but take a poncho with you.

Land-based: Good numbers of metre-plus mulloway have been landed at Secret Harbour, Long Point and Port Kennedy, where they have been swimming with 35-40cm tailor, plenty of herring and the odd salmon. At the Penguin Island spit herring and whiting have been the main catches, while Woodman Point and the Ammo Jetty have produced garfish, herring and a few squid. Rockingham and Palm Beach jetties have been fishing well for these species too, along with mulloway up to a metre, which have been taken at night on live baits. Point Peron produced a few squid and plenty of herring.

These great fishing tips were provided by the friendly team at Compleat Angler & Camping World in Rockingham, so make sure you chat to their experienced crew in store and stock up before heading out!
Perth catches
Shout out to spearfishing legend Barry Paxman showing the youngsters how it's done, with this solid Spanish mackerel speared for a great feed recently. To keep up with his incredible skills along with many other spearfishers around WA, give the @aussiereels page a follow.

Boats

When the weather has allowed boats to be sent out demersal catches have been good, with pink snapper, baldchin groper and dhufish coming from the back of Rottnest and out from Ocean Reef, Mindarie and Two Rocks. Yellowtail kingfish have been caught off Rottnest’s West End and the island’s inshore waters have fished well for King George whiting, which have also been active at the Windmills and on the Three Mile Reef, where they have been kept company with pink snapper and Samsonfish. Squid have been caught inshore off Hillarys and kayak fishers have been getting a few at South Fremantle and Coogee. Sand whiting catches have been good in 10-15m depths off Swanbourne, Cottesloe and City Beach but their numbers have dropped off near the shipping channel. Big schools of mulloway have been holing up in the shipping channel. A few big tailor have been mixed in among the choppers in the Swan River, making trolling worthwhile, but blue swimmer crabs have become much harder to find. The few have been caught have been big and generally brimming with meat though, so it does pay off to put in the hours and dropping nets across different areas. Sunday is looking like a better day for the boaties this weekend as the swell is lower and the wind should be an easterly, while Saturday is expecting only a brief reprieve from the light to moderate westerly wind around midday.

Passionate spearo @britt_c_stewart plucked herself a couple of good-sized demersals for the morning off Perth. With spearfishing being highly sustainable and more selective, it means you can select your fish for the table more efficiently than dropping a line off a boat. Great day out!

Shore-based

The unsettled weather has produced an excellent run of pink snapper, particularly at North Mole and on the northern beaches. North Mole has also produced plenty of herring, night-time tailor, skippy and garfish, as well as the odd big mulloway. It’s fished well for squid too, as did the rock walls around Fishing Boat Harbour and on Capo D’orlando Drive. Big winter tailor have been caught from reefy beaches such as Swanbourne, Leighton and Cottesloe and a few mid-sized snapper have turned up as well. On calmer days Floreat Beach has produced herring, skippy and whiting. The far northern metro beaches have produced mulloway including one monster landed at Quinns last night, as well as pink snapper. No land-based salmon catches have been reported apart from the brief session south of Scarborough early last week. Fremantle Harbour has been quiet, but it was full of scaly mackerel. Herring have also been caught there as well, but bigger species have been absent. The Swan River was also quiet, with mulloway chasers putting in long hours for little reward in what is usually a prime time. Skittish bony herring or mullet schools are usually a sure-fire indicator of mulloway action but baitfish have been hard to find. Nevertheless, the Narrows Bridge is always worth a shot for big mulloway. The upper reaches of the Swan, which had been fishing well for small bream, flathead and soapy mulloway have become a little quieter but further down big bream have been taken from areas with a bit of structure, including Canning Bridge, the Narrows, the Causeway and Mt Henry Bridge in the Canning River. There have been some good tailor catches in the Swan River, from Canning Bridge downstream, with a 50cm model pulled out from among the choppers at Canning Bridge this week. The Swan’s lower reaches have been quiet, offering the odd flathead, tarwhine and juvenile pink snapper.  A couple of anglers flicking soft plastics behind Optus Stadium last weekend had a nice session, landing a dozen flathead ranging from 30-40cm on Z-Man Grubz soft plastics. Pumpkin Seed and Midnight Oil were the most successful colours.

Even if the Metro salmon aren't interested in your lures at the moment, there's always a chance your biceps could get more than they bargained for! Peter Haggas tested out his back and knots in emphatic style this week, landing this chunky Sambo amongst loads of salmon that were harassing large schools of bait. Image credit: @nolangoesbeachfishing2.0.

A big thanks to Anglers Fishing World in Fremantle for their great tips! These guys love their fishing just as much as we all do, so make sure you ask their super friendly team for advice and stock up before wetting a line off the land or boat!
