Broome catches
Mark Davis @flying.foam was able to help young fishing enthusiast Charlie land this rather chunky queenie off Broome recently. Be careful when handling these fish as they have some nasty spines on their dorsal and anal fins.

Boats

Boats going out wide have mainly picked up Rankin cod but those staying in close have been getting among Spanish mackerel off Gantheaume Point. The edge of Deeps and the rock ledges in Roebuck Bay have been quiet, but threadfin salmon have been in reasonable numbers at Crab Creek and at the Fingers. A few bluebone have been taken in close off Entrance Point. Those easterly winds are mainly strongest in the mornings until around midday in the afternoons so from around 2-6pm most evenings this week should be more comfortable out on the water if the tides allow relatively easy launches and retrievals.

Shore-based

Muddie mission success for the @reefchiefaustralia team!

The Town Beach Jetty has offered bream, small queenfish and trevally, while Entrance Point has produced these in bigger sizes along with the odd bluebone. Spanish mackerel could be worth a crack at Gantheaume Point as boaties have reported seeing the mackies in very close. Willie Creek has offered trevally and a few mangrove jack. Barramundi activity has been very slow in the Fitzroy River and Eighty Mile Beach has been quiet on the threadfin salmon front. Only a few people have been targeting whiting around Cable Beach but decent catches were reported.

Big thanks to the crew from Tackle World Broome for their tips! Make sure you pay them a visit for the best gear and advice for your next fishing trip.
Exmouth catches
Ethan and Jil from @troopyventure managed to duck out behind the reef after patiently waiting all week for the wind to die down and they were rewarded with this lovely yellowfin!

Boats

Cooler water temperatures have tamed catches a little, but on the west side billfishing has been steady with reasonable numbers of black marlin and sailfish being taken in 80-150m. Dolphinfish and the odd wahoo have been among the bycatch and dollies have been landed at the FADs also. Sharks have been a big problem for crews targeting red emperor and Rankin cod out west and it’s been no easier further out for those chasing goldband snapper, so make sure you move around and suss out all our shark bite-off tips on our dedicated webpage. Wahoo and big Spanish mackerel have been on Helby Bank, but plenty of sharks have again been keeping them company. Try free-spooling your reel if the tax man is hot on their tail to let the fish use their superior speed to its advantage. Those targeting the lagoons near the national park have scored the odd spangled emperor. At the Muirons, coral trout have been caught in close and red emperor and Rankin cod have been landed in 70-80m. Golden trevally and Spanish mackerel have been about as well. In Exmouth Gulf tuna have been mixed in with school mackerel at the Shoals, while blue-lined emperor and golden trevally have been caught in reasonable numbers. A few coral trout have been taken also, while squid catches have been good in 2-3m. Saturday should be a complete glass off and ideal for the boaties, with the rest of the week also looking inviting on the forecast.

Shore-based

This is an absolute belter of a permit for @brody.sutton who enjoyed another great week of fishing around the Exmouth Gulf flats alongside @claterz!

In Exmouth Gulf the town marina has held its usual mix of bream, trevally, cod and small queenfish, along with a few mangrove jack at night. Bigger queenfish have been taken from the outside rock wall where squid catches have been reasonable. Squid have also been taken from the light industrial area. Whiting catches have been fair from Bundegi down to Learmonth. Mangrove jack and bream have been hanging around Learmonth Jetty, where a sizeable tuna and a decent queenfish were landed this week. Bundegi has held trevally and queenfish at first and last light, while mangrove jack and squid have been taken there at night. From VLF Bay around to the top of the Cape spangled emperor and golden trevally have been caught, along with the odd bluebone. Spangled emperor and a few mangrove jack have turned up at the Tantabiddi boat ramp, while towards the national park a fly-fisher scored the enviable double of a permit and a bonefish in the one session.

These great tips were courtesy of the friendly team at Tackle World Exmouth. Swing by their store for the best advice and gear ahead of your next trip!

Kalbarri catches
Chinaman pull seriously hard and Leigh's Saragosa 6000 had a great workout trying to land this beauty. This fish is top quality eating and they often contain great fat marbling through their flesh that rivals even the best wagyu steaks.

Boats

Glamour conditions were enjoyed by Kalbarri Offshore and Angling Club members for their monthly competition last weekend and their catches didn’t disappoint. Crews got out far and wide with some as far north as the wrecks and catches included red emperor, Rankin cod, Samsonfish, dhufish to 10kg, big cod, cobia and pink snapper. Closer to town there were plenty of pink snapper in close and tuna and Spanish mackerel to 17kg, while Spaniards were also in good numbers off Wagoe. Early on both mornings this weekend looks inviting for the boaties before the southerly wind spikes from midday. Monday onwards should see great boating conditions.

Shore-based

Wittecarra Beach has held some good morning tailor since the swells picked up and an 8kg mulloway was taken there on Wednesday. Big tailor have also been taken at Back Beach and the mouth of the Murchison River, while tailor and pink snapper have been landed from the cliffs. Down at Wagoe balloon fishers and droners have landed Spanish mackerel to 15kg when the swells have been low and the forecast means this could be on the cards again from Monday to Wednesday. A 16kg mulloway was taken in the estuary by a competitor in the Kalbarri Offshore and Angling Club competition and sizeable cod and bream were also caught. A few chopper tailor have been around the marina jetty and a couple of anglers fishing around the boat pens at night landed mangrove jack on blades and vibes on Wednesday. The best whiting catches in the Murchison River have been on the far-side flats.

Shout out to Dean from Kalbarri Sports and Dive for his tips! Feel free to venture into his store to ask for advice if you're wetting a line around Kalbarri!
Geraldton catches
@mat.svenson ducked out for a quick session on the yak over the weekend and landed this cracker of a pinkie off Gero!

Boats

Big swells kept most boats on trailers this week, but fishers opting for bigger boats have reported heaps of pink snapper offshore. The Halco Abrolhos Game Fishing Tournament based at the Big Pigeon Island in the Wallabi Group wrapped up last Friday. One blue marlin was tagged and about 10-12 billfish were raised. In the light tackle section fished on 4kg line, Spanish mackerel were in abundance and a wahoo was landed, along with a few dolphinfish and quite a few yellowfin tuna, bonito, spotted and broad-barred mackerel and even a rainbow runner. On other days competitors found good numbers of dhufish, baldchin groper, pink snapper and coral trout, along with a few sweetlip. The moderate to strong southerly winds and 2m swell might make it a tad uncomfortable this weekend, but early on Monday and Tuesday could hold nicer conditions.

Shore-based

A quad-bike fisher scored a handsome double south of West Bank, landing a sizeable mulloway and a 6kg dhufish. Since the swells picked up however, mulloway numbers have waned. Tailor catches have been patchy, but the Greenough River mouth has produced despite weed being a problem at times. Herring have been caught at Batavia Coast Marina’s all-access platform and from the rocks at Sail Inn, and also at Pages Beach before the weed moved in. In the marina, the odd bream and a few good skippy have been caught, while the weed bank formed in the corner has produced lots of squid in small sizes.

Thanks to the team at Geraldton Sports Centre for their tips! They will happily provide you with great gear and the solid advice for your next fishing trip.
Lancelin catches

Boats

There wasn't many boats getting wet earlier this week, but once the swell settled and it was safe to launch and leave the bay, the fishing was pretty good around the bay. Squid have been in great numbers, with that late afternoon to sunset period tending to be the prime time to target them, while the weed banks have produced skippy and snook in good numbers. The southern shallows of the bay have held schools of herring. King George whiting were available with frequent moves necessary to keep ahead of the trumpeters, while excellent sized sand whiting have been caught north of the bay in 5-6m. Pink snapper have been frequenting the burly trails in 10-15m with the odd dhufish turning up. Further offshore in 30-40m saw fishers picking up cuttlefish on the drift along with gummy sharks and the usual mix of demersal species. This weekend won't hold ideal conditions with moderate southerly winds coming through along with a 2m swell, but Monday onwards should see great boating weather return.

Shore-based

There was a decent increase in mulloway caught late last week along the local beaches, which coincided with the new moon phase. Tailor have not been around in great numbers with only the odd fish per session, but they should improve in numbers and sizes over the coming months. A mixed feed of fish can be gathered after setting up a good burley trail, which has been getting some variety off the beach with catches of dart, herring, tarwhine, skippy and some very solid sand whiting. Early on Sunday and Monday morning is looking best for the land-based fishers.

Big thanks to Peter Fullarton for his tips on what's biting around Lancelin each week! If you want Peter to put you on to the fish directly, make sure you check out his Tailored Treks Tours page. Always a great time and Peter knows the best spots around Lancelin like the back of his hand.

Esperance catches
A quick snap and release of this bronzie for @gidos_fishing_adventures recently near Esperance! Click here to view Gido's beach fishing action on YouTube

Boats

Excellent midweek weather helped crews do well on pink snapper at Buddys Head, while breaksea cod and nannygai were in good numbers at Figure of Eight and Boxer Islands. Samsonfish have been active around the Cape, while plenty of queen snapper and harlequin fish have been taken at Black Island. Small tuna have been caught around Cull Island. Squid have moved into shallower depths and 5m has been the sweet spot for them in Esperance Bay, which has also offered big herring near the port area. Decent King George whiting have been taken at Flat Rocks, while Wylie Bay has fished well for sand whiting. This afternoon looks quite decent on the forecast although Sunday looks best out of both days this weekend.

Shore-based

Big salmon schools have been passing through Tagon Beach, while Thomas River has fished well for mulloway and gummy sharks. Salmon have been consistent at Dunns Beach, while at Stockyards sand whiting, flathead, small salmon and tarwhine have been landed. Fourth Beach, Salmon Beach and 14-Mile Beach have all produced salmon, while Blue Haven has offered lots of skippy and sand whiting. Skippy, King George whiting and tailor have been in Bandy Creek Boat Harbour, while the afternoons have fished well for squid and herring at the Town and Taylor Street jetties. Woody Lake has been the pick of the bream spots.

Hats off to the very knowledgeable team at Southern Sports & Tackle for their tips! These guys love their fishing as well, so make sure you swing by their store for the best gear and advice before wetting a line around Esperance.

Great Southern catches
An absolute beauty of a salmon landed on the sand by 11-year old Benjamin Oswald at Windy Harbour this week! Ben is now is the running for a range of great prizes in our kids salmon photo competition that ends on 31st May! Click here for all the comp info!

Boats

A heads up to all boat fishers that the four Albany FADs have now been retrieved for maintenance before the rougher weather settles in, but it was great to see fishers still getting on to the dollies earlier this week. They should be back in the water around November and this season has been a cracker overall. Crews have been getting among salmon, tuna and bonito off Bald Head and around the islands and they have also found pink snapper in very close, often in King George Sound. The Sound has been quieter than usual for King George whiting, but it has yielded some sand whiting and big squid, which have been holding deeper than usual. When weather windows were found the coral ground yielded pink snapper, dhufish and breaksea cod, while way out wide hapuka were landed. Sunday should hold lovely conditions for those wishing to send it out.

Shore-based

Western Angler editor Scott Coghlan getting amongst the red hot salmon action at Cheynes Beach on Wednesday!

Salmon remain the main game, but the action has cooled a little. Cheynes Beach, which produced some hot sessions at the Tourist Rocks last week has slowed, but has been producing at times and rebounded midweek. Shelley Beach has probably been the most consistent spot this week, however good catches have also come from Sand Patch, Lowlands, Nanarup and the beach at Salmon Holes. Denmark’s Light and Ocean Beaches have produced as well and salmon have been plentiful at Bremer Bay. Good numbers of salmon were also taken around Walpole, at Bellanger and Mandalay beaches. Herring have been everywhere and there has been some pretty good bycatch for salmon fishers at times including tuna, bonito, yellowtail kingfish and Samsonfish. The town marina has offered squid, herring and small skippy, while Frenchman Bay has been good for squid and small King George whiting. Blue swimmer crabs have made a comeback for scoop netters in Princess Royal Harbour, while at Emu Point the water has cleared at last and squid, bream, whiting, skippy and juvenile salmon could be around. Bream and mulloway activity has been very quiet in the King and Kalgan rivers.

Cheers to the Trailblazers Albany crew for their fishing tips this week! Swing by their store if you're after some top gear and advice ahead of your next fishing trip. Remember, you'll also catch just as many fish off the beaches than the rocks and it is always much safer to go with this option on the south coast.

South-West catches
Some more salmon and shark aerial magic from @mat.kleczkowski.photography this week in our South-West! The salmon haven't been as prominent in our South-West as they have been along the South Coast so far this year, but spikes in catches are now popping up more frequently around the Capes.

Boats

Plenty of dhufish have been landed in 30m depths either side of Bunbury with pink snapper, baldchin groper and big breaksea cod among the bycatch. Pink snapper have been prolific in close as well, with lumps starting from 8m producing good fish for crews drifting or anchoring and using burley. Lots of skippy and the odd Samsonfish have shown up in the burley trails. Squid have been in deeper water out from Bunbury in 5-25m with cuttlefish being taken in all sorts of depths, including out very wide. Squid have been in reasonable numbers in Geographe Bay, which has also thrown up a few King George whiting. Putting a bigger line out in the bay has paid off as well, with a few anglers finding sizeable pink snapper in very close. The lumps around the Four-Mile Reef have also produced plenty of pink snapper along with a few dhufish. Kayak fishers in the bay have found King George whiting sizes to be down and have struggled to get their usual good hauls of squid. Blue swimmer crabs continue to reward drop netters in the Leschenault Estuary and there has been no shortage of chopper tailor and herring in there either. The mornings are looking best for the boaties over the coming days.

Shore-based

Pink snapper and big winter tailor have turned up on local beaches from Preston all the way down to Peppermint Grove. Both drone fishers and casters have been getting the pinkies. Herring have been thick at most of these beaches and again, Dalyellup has been a standout for the little scrappers. There have been a few whispers of big mulloway taken from beaches closer to Bunbury, while Back Beach and the Bunbury Cut have held herring, small skippy and chopper tailor. The Collie River has continued to yield small giant herring and soapy mulloway and bream catches have vastly improved there, with good fish being taken on soft plastics, small hard-bodied lures and mullet-strip baits. Scoopers prepared to do some walking have been getting blue swimmer crabs in the estuary. Busselton Jetty produced a couple of good pink snapper over the weekend and it has held plenty of squid and a few herring. In addition to the resident Samsonfish, the end of the jetty is also worth a crack for pelagic species such as tuna, bonito and yellowtail kingfish. A few land-based pink snapper have been taken around Yallingup and Dunsborough, but salmon have continued to disappoint with just the odd resident fish being landed in Hamelin Bay, Eagle Bay and Castle Rock. A midweek surprise school did turn up in Bunker Bay however, so it’s a matter of being in the right place at the right time. Catches have been more consistent down at Yeagerup. Optimists are hoping the early winter storms will break up schools and push salmon closer to shore for the run back home.

Big cheers to Whitey's Tackle & Camping for their top fishing tips as always! If you're in Australind or Bunbury and are keen to wet a line throughout our South-West make sure you ask their very friendly team who love their fishing for advice and stock up on gear at their store. If you're in Busselton, the 2 Oceans Tackle team are also incredibly helpful.

@freshwest_ has established himself as the trout master of the South-West and seems to always know where the decent fish are lurking. The faster flowing water seems to be the most productive at the moment and catches should improve once more rain arrives.
Redfin perch catches have been improving in sizes and numbers as the water cools and the fish start to breed. Soft plastics have accounted for good fish in Glen Mervyn Dam, Harvey Dam, Wellington Dam, the Collie River around town, Lake Kepwari and Black Diamond Lake. Trout continue to be hard to find, although there have been whispers that a few of the notoriously difficult to tempt rainbow trout at Honeymoon Pool were caught this week. The Pemberton area has fished well for redfin perch and the odd decent rainbow trout if you’re willing to put in the distance on foot.
Mandurah and surrounds
It was as good as it gets for a fishing session for @edwardd.bradfield_ this week off Mandurah! He landed a nice marlin before a rather chunky dolphinfish bycatch!

Boats: A heads up to all Mandurah boat fishers that the Mandurah FADs (including those deployed off Rockingham and the metro region) have now been taken out of the water for general maintenance and will be re-deployed by DPIRD around October/November later this year. Check out all FAD coordinates and deployment statuses on our FADs webpage here. Demersals have been about in good numbers very close in, but crews out wide have had to work harder. The 8-12m depths have produced dhufish and lots of pink snapper, along with big baldchin groper and a few breaksea cod. Pink snapper have been harder to find out on the Five-Fathom Bank with many people attributing the close-in demersal catches to blue swimmer crabs leaving the Peel-Harvey Estuary, suggesting the dhufish and pinks are feasting on them. As for the estuary, crabbing has become a bit more of more of a challenge, but still worthwhile. Chopper tailor and herring numbers have been good and skippy and juvenile salmon have been about as well. Good numbers of sand whiting have been inside the Five-Fathom Bank, but the inshore waters have been a little dirty for squid. Demersal fishers have reported seeing plenty of squid further out. The inshore reefs have held lots of garfish. The mornings over the coming days look inviting for the boaties.

Land-based: Pink snapper have been rewarding those fishing the rock walls at the Dawesville Cut, near the ocean entrance of the main marina at Mandurah and also at White Hills, where drone fishers have been doing best. The tailor run on local beaches has slowed, but herring have been about in good numbers. The town bridges and the Dawesville Cut have yielded tailor, herring and skippy, while solid bream have come from the Serpentine and Murray rivers. Scoop netters have had to work harder for blue swimmer crabs.

Thinking of wetting a line around Mandurah? These great tips were courtesy of the super friendly and helpful team at Tackle World Miami so make sure you swing by their store for the best tips and gear before your next fishing trip!

SECRET HARBOUR / PORT KENNEDY / ROCKINGHAM / SAFETY BAY / WARNBRO SOUND

Boats: A heads up to all Rockingham boat fishers that the Rockingham FADs (including those deployed off Mandurah and the metro region) have now been taken out of the water for general maintenance and will be re-deployed by DPIRD around October/November later this year. Check out all FAD coordinates and deployment statuses on our FADs webpage here. Dhufish catches have been good in 50m or so behind Garden Island, out towards the Five-Fathom Bank and out even wider. Pink snapper, baldchin groper and breaksea cod have been in the mix as well. Pink snapper have been prolific in close too, with Cockburn Sound offering good numbers for those anchoring up and throwing in burley. Better spots have included the Sisters, Sulphur Rock and the Garden Island causeway. Tailor and skippy have been the main bycatch, with tailor also active around the exposed offshore reefs. When the water is clear squid have been in good numbers and sizes inside of Garden Island, on Parmelia Bank, off Penguin Island and in Mangles Bay. Depths of 5m have been a good starting point. These locations have also held sand whiting, herring and King George whiting. There are still a few blue swimmer crabs in Cockburn Sound for drop netters. It should be decent conditions this weekend, but Sunday onwards is looking best.

Land-based: Pink snapper turned up in good numbers last weekend with Secret Harbour, Woodman Point, the Ammo Jetty and Point Peron throwing up good fish. Tailor fishing has been steady at Long Point, Secret Harbour and Port Kennedy and lots of herring have been about. A few flathead and sand whiting have been caught at the Penguin Island spit, while slimy mackerel have been swimming with scaly mackerel at the Ammo Jetty, which has held herring and few chopper tailor along with the odd squid. A few squid have been caught at Woodman Point and the Rockingham and Palm Beach jetties, along with herring and chopper tailor. Divers have been picking up blue swimmer crabs off the Rockingham foreshore and at Woodman Point.

These great fishing tips were provided by the friendly team at Compleat Angler & Camping World in Rockingham, so make sure you chat to their experienced crew in store and stock up before heading out!
Perth catches
A lovely jumbo during a cheeky free dive for @britt_c_stewart off Rottnest! There have been lots of crays caught in depths from 2-10m all around Rotto, so get your pots and loops out!

Boats

A heads up to all boat fishers that the metro FADs (including Perth Game Fishing Club's FADs) have now been taken out of the water for general maintenance and will be re-deployed by DPIRD around October/November later this year. It was a great season of catches and the FADs from Exmouth up to Broome are currently being deployed in our northern regions for those venturing up to wet a line! Check out all FAD coordinates and deployment statuses on our FADs webpage here. Dhufish catches dropped off a little this week, but drifting in 30-40m either side of Rottnest and in 20-30m around Two Rocks has usually been rewarding. Pink snapper have been fairly easy to find with 20m depths a good starting point, with some of the better spots including the Three-Mile Reef and Stragglers, which also has held herring and tailor. Off Hillarys, pink snapper have been in even closer with good fish being caught in 9m and Mindarie has held them in similar depths. Squid, herring, King George whiting and sand whiting have been in good numbers inshore at Fremantle and in the bays at Rottnest, while good KGs have been landed along with skippy at the Three-Mile Reef. Sand whiting have been abundant in 10m off City Beach, which has been a very consistent spot for them for a long time. Tailor have been active at Mewstones which has also produced skippy and tarwhine. Blue swimmer crab numbers have tapered in the Swan River but they are popping up on occasions in water from 2-5m deep. Sunday looks to be the better of the two across this weekend, but Monday onwards next week should see the flat conditions return.

Love chasing swordfish off Perth or keen to learn more about it? Perth Game Fishing Club in partnership with Fremantle Sailing Club are hosting a sword masterclass where the skilled crew from SendNBend and 3 Drops discuss how they chase these gladiators of the deep! Shore-based

Plenty of pink snapper have been landed from the rock walls with North Mole the standout, but good fish were also coming from the stones at Coogee, Hillarys, Mindarie and Two Rocks. Pinnaroo Point also produced a nice one this week, as did Alkimos, with both droners and casters getting in on the snapper action across the metro region. North Mole has held slimy mackerel and lots of herring, with some good tailor turning up most evenings along with the odd skippy. South Mole has offered herring and a few skippy. The rock walls around South Fremantle and the Fishing Boat Harbour have held small squid under the lights along with herring and small skippy. Cottesloe Groyne has offered herring. A lot of beaches were carved up early in the week, but with better weather over the weekend they should yield herring, skippy and sand whiting. New gutters have likely formed which could hold big tailor or school mulloway. Good tailor have been landed in the middle and lower Swan River, mainly at first light, but numbers have been well down. A big mulloway was landed from a jetty in the lower reaches (likely in Mosman Bay) earlier this week, while decent soapies have also been caught around Belmont. Lots of big rays have been in the river, which have proved a nuisance for mulloway chasers. Bream have also started to become more active on the flats from the Causeway up river, but the better catches have continued to come from areas of structure such as Canning Bridge, the boatyard at Maylands and the snags further up towards Guildford. In the Canning River Riverton Bridge has been a good spot for them. Sunday is looking best this weekend for a land-based fish if you wish to target the beaches.

Make sure you don't miss out on tomorrow's Get Reel Two Rocks fishing competition! With land-based, boat-based and junior prizes up for grabs, there’s something for everyone, so come down and say g'day! Recfishwest is excited to support this great event, which is a fantastic celebration of community, family fun and fishing in the northern suburbs and we’ll be on the ground handing out our merch, having a yarn about all things fishing and joining in the festivities.
