I do shark fishing trips! Today we ran a HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL inshore shark fishing trip from Va Beach. These are great trips for the family and are easy, fun, and you get to catch big fish!

Today my group shows up at the boat for a half day inshore trip. The group was 2 guys from Pennsylvania and I asked them what they wanted to catch. They said "anything". We were chatting making small talk on the way out of the inlet and I said "why do you want to just catch anything?". They said that every other summer their family rents a beach house in Sandbridge for a week long summer family vacation in Virginia Beach and the last time they were here, they had a bad experience with charter fishing.

I'm not going to say the name of the charter, but they booked through Fishing Booker expecting for the 2 of them to be the whole charter since they paid to reserve the whole boat. When they arrived for their charter, there were 6 more people, making 8 people on the charter. They left Rudee Inlet and the second they cleared the rocks, the mate put trolling gear out for Spanish mackerel, the boat never left trolling speed, trolled in circles the whole time, and they never caught a fish. The one guy said he thought the other people on the boat were obnoxious, he never touched a fishing pole, and spent $300 per person for a boat ride that was made miserable by a captain who didn't care about putting his customers on fish and sharing the boat with a whole other crew of people they had never met before. To me it sounded like a miserable experience and I hate hearing things like this because when people have a bad experience, typically they don't waste their money doing it again.

I thanked them for giving me a try and booking with me and off we went. The water was nasty outside Rudee Inlet, so I ran up to Cape Henry and I put the gear out for Spanish mackerel. Immediately we started catching Spanish mackerel and bluefish. The first ten minutes of the trip and the group told me the trip was already an infinitely better experience than the last time. We caught a limit of bluefish really quick and about a half dozen Spanish mackerel mixed in and they were content but I told them that the mackerel and blues were just the bait for what we were going to go do next. They are musky fishermen from Pennsylvania and were happy with just catching a fish. They said they are cursed with saltwater fishing but once we started catching fish, I was told that the last time, their cousin caught a stingray off the pier and it was the biggest fish, so now we had a goal. We had bait in the cooler so I pulled up to the shark spot, right outside the breakers at the Virginia Beach oceanfront and started shark fishing. I dont put any chum out because I don't want to endanger swimmers, but this particular spot we are sitting on the boat while people on the beach are watching us catch sharks. I dropped down the first bait and within minutes we are hooked up. The guy catches a 4-5 foot sand tiger and says it's the biggest fish he has ever caught and then the other guy gets a turn and catches a similarly sized sand tiger pretty quickly. They were amazed at how close to the beach the sharks were and really just happy to catch some fish.
