Capt. Howard Bogan Jr. reported his Thursday to Friday canyon trip with the Jamaica from Brielle produced over 240 dolphin up to 24 pounds before they had a pick of yellowfins to 80 pounds plus albacore to 45 pounds, and two swordfish at night -- including a shot just before dawn. A 35-pound wahoo was also caught while dolphin fishing. Efram Bautista from Queens hooked it on a Mike Jung-Peace Token Tackle bucktail.
Capt. Stan Zagleski had very good porgy fishing on his Elaine B. from Highlands, along with the one blackfish allowed per angler. Ken Smith of Jersey City won the pool with a 6-pound tog.
There was a roaring new moon current this morning as Gene Graman tried clamming with his That's It from Twin Lights Marina in Highlands at Romer Shoal and on the clam beds off Sandy Hook with no success. Freddie Fessell and I picked a few "trash" fish (skates, sea robins and smooth dogfish), but never even had a striper hit on the incoming tide. There were birds working off Sandy Hook, but all we saw under them were 2-pound blues. However, a private boater told me his son fought a 50-pound black drum that hit an Ava diamond jig under those birds.
Allen Riley of South Plainfield finally hit it right in the Sandy Hook surf this morning. There was bait showing, as there had been, but this time he started getting hits on a Mann's Super Stretch 1-Minus right away -- catching three stripers of 25, 26 and 28 inches plus two 2-pound blues. Ed Riley of Edison and Jose Cotelo from North Bergen each caught a blue.
