I’m not talking about Rhonda Byrne’s self-help tome love it or hate it but something that likely will actually if not change your life at least vastly improve your fly-fishing success. If you have read anything much of my various blogs you will already know that I constantly bemoan the focus of fly anglers on […]

We have had a long stretch of cold weather this winter. Morning lows either side of 0 degrees Fahrenheit or even below and daytime highs in the teens. A few snowstorms have made the winter scene complete. This week is full moon and one of my favorite scenes is in view. Sorry no picture of it the camera simply does not capture the scene.

The weather was cold but it was hot fishing today while jigging. I had a chance to try out some  Varivas nylon line today and it worked out well as you can see from the photo! As many of you know I am a line tester for Varivas lines.  I've written a lot about their braided lines and fluorocarbon for saltwater applications. Now I'm back to ice fi...

Well this is it! Wintertime fishing at its finest. These past couple weeks we have seen a bit of inconsistent weather and high winds. This makes it tough to get offshore but if you have the boat it can still be productive. Red grouper are being caught in about 100′. Gag grouper being caught and […] The post Fishing Report-Friday January 30 2026 ap...

Over the last 36 hours the bite has been mostly early morning and late afternoon. The best depths have been 24-28 feet.  Shallow evening spots are also becoming more active. It’s time for some of the fishing to improve in the shallow water.  This weekend some anglers will be going deep and some going shallow.  […] The post January 30th 2026 first...

The difference between breaking strain and the “X” system. Yes it is mid-winter here in Wales freezing cold and the prospects for any fishing even Euro-nymphing for grayling are severely limited. We have had nothing but rain for weeks and the rivers are in spate. But with no fishing expeditions to write about I have […]

Mid-winter fishing conditions are in full swing across the Naples and Marco Island backcountry including the Rookery Bay Preserve and that means productive fishing deeper in the creeks bays and mangrove shorelines. If you spend enough days nymphing rivers like the Missouri you eventually stop arguing about whether a 10-foot fly rod is worth it and start wondering how you ever lived without one. For years 9-foot rods were staples. They were versatile familiar and “standard.” But modern nymphing—especially on big technical tailwaters—has evolved. Deeper rigs l...

The answer is Yes. A year ago tournaments at Guntersville were being dominated by Livescope this time of year. The conditions are perfect for Livescope but in the Toyota series the vast majority of fish being weighed in are caught power fishing. Bass are highly evolved creatures and their instincts prioritize preservation of self and preservation...

We're back! After a month and a half layoff we were back fishing today and with a few trips lined up in the next few days I should have some fishing reports.  Today I met Ed and Madonna AndrewLavage down at Sawpit Creek boat ramp - the tide had been coming in for a couple of hours but I thought it wouldn't hurt to make the run up the Nassau to Br...

The ice is shaping up well with the colder weather. Road banks and existing snowdrifts need to be avoided because the water they collect has not yet frozen. Ice depth is approximately 30″ and access to the lake is in excellent condition. The bite has been the same with small Walleye in deeper water […] The post February 20th 2026 first appeared...
