Went out on a charter ("Luck E Strike") out of Pensacola beach yesterday for brother in law's birthday. beautiful day flat calm, 30-40' visibility from surface down about 8-10 miles south southeast of Pensacola pass. Sargasso weed line also about that far out . Fished a wreck and live bottom about a mile from each other caught AJ's and trigger (both out of season now), snapper and kings. The trigger are thick and steal bait rapidly, i suggest 4-6/0 hooks. Our deckhand was sending 3/0 dropper rigs down and we pulled trigger after trigger with intermittent legal red snaps. Aj and some snapper were caught on live ballyhoo which we acquired from the live bait boat just outside the pass, $20 for 20 or so which saved us about an hour of searching for bait. the deck hand sold us on the bait boat at the dock, but we could have gotten some on the way (not an hours worth of searching like the deckhand said) do to all the bait balls we could see from it being so calm. I suggest paying attention to the conditions before you commit to the bait boat. Since we were sending small hooks down, we caught a few ruby lips and sent them down on a fish finder rig for grouper on live bottom with no luck. Hooked up on one king near weed line over the live bottom, couldn't land. Hooked and landed the other king 3 miles out heading back to the pass trolling 7.0->6.7 mph hit on the speed change. overall great surface conditions, i thought the captain should've spent no more than 15-20 minutes on a site and had sites close enough to change frequently if no fish on. but what do i know? good luck
