Barnegat Fishing

Barnegat Fishing

Barnegat, New Jersey is a coastal city on the Atlantic Ocean. The Lenape Native Americans would travel to the Barnegat area in the summer for gathering clams and preserving them for the winter. With the shells, they created wampum, which was their form of currency. Around 1609, a Dutch sailor came across the inlet of the area and named it Barende-gat for the Inlet of Breakers. It was in 1720 that the first European settlers permanently lived in the area. Some whalers set up their homes in Barnegat and used the cedar trees there to build their ships. The township was one of the major seaports at the time, and fishing also contributed to its success.

In Barnegat Bay and Barnegat Inlet there are lots of Bluefish, Flounder, Striped Bass, and Weakfish (Gray Trout) that are caught. Nearshore fishing Barnegat will produce lots of Black Sea Bass and Tautog on bottom. Bluefin Tuna, Little Tunny, and Mackerel are frequently caught off while trolling nearshore Barnegat. Hake, Haddock, and Tilefish are popular targets on bottom between nearshore and the deep. Offshore there is great tuna fishing, including Bluefin. Big Eye, and Yellowfin Tuna toward the canyons. In the warmer months, Mahi-mahi, Wahoo, Blue Marlin and White Marlin are common visitors.

Record catches from Barnegat fishing include a 13-pound, 13-ounce Atlantic Bonito, a two-pound, eight-ounce Northern Kingfish, and a 41-pound, seven-ounce White Hake.
