Chincoteague is located in Maryland and is well known for the wild horses and good fishing. Assateague Island to the south shields Chincoteague on the eastern side from the ocean and provides an excellent estuary full of fish between the two. The first land grant on Chincoteague occurred in 1650 and spanned 1,500 acres. Settlers moved to the island in 1671 and set up farms here. Farming and fishing has been a staple of Chincoteague for centuries.
At Chincoteague, you can fish in the inshore waters or venture out into the Atlantic Ocean. Inshore fish you could catch include Croaker, Drum, Flounder, Kingfish, Striped Bass, Tautog and Trout. Mackerel and False Albacore are common on the troll off the beaches. Nearshore fishing Chincoteague, you can catch Black Seabass and Tautog on bottom. In the deep on bottom there are lots of tilefish with both Blueline and Golden tilefish being the most common. Popular catches offshore fishing includes Bluefin Tuna, Yellowfin Tuna, Wahoo and several species of billfish, including Blue Marlin, White Marlin, and Swordfish.
