Geraldton Fishing

Geraldton Fishing

As a coastal city with a major seaport in western Australia, Geraldton is a great place for fishing. Aboriginal people from the Murchison-Gascoyne region helped early settlers find permanent water sources and worked in the fishing, pastoral and pearling industries. It is unknown when the Aboriginal people first began exploring and living in Geraldton, although it is known that they were on the west coast of Australia for 40,000 years. During the 17th and 18th centuries, European mariners had a tendency of finding themselves shipwrecked on the islands that are 37 miles out from Geraldton. The plentiful reefs, numerous wrecks, and rocky bottom off the coast, make Geraldton a top fishing destination in Australia.

Geraldton fishing offers beaches with deep channels and rocky points. Large Mulloway like to hang around the reefs. Around the rocks and pylons at Geraldton Harbour, you will find an abundance of Black Bream. Other fish you could catch while inshore Geraldton fishing are Herring, Sand Whiting, Skippy, Spanish Mackerel, Tailor and Tarwhine. You can fish for Skippy and Tailor nearshore too. If you venture offshore, your most likely catches are Baldchin Groper, Coral Trout, Dhufish, Pink Snapper, Samson Fish and Tuna. A 12.6-foot Hammerhead Shark was caught at Geraldton, proving there is enough food for some of the largest predators. Offshore trolling can produce Yellowfin Tuna, Blue Marlin, and Sailfish during much of the year.
