Grand Isle Fishing

Grand Isle Fishing

Grand Isle is an inhabited barrier island in Louisiana that provides access to the Gulf of Mexico and Barataria Bay. As you may expect, Grand Isle fishing offers plenty of opportunities. People have been fishing at the island since the Chitimacha tribe. European settlement started in the 1780s when Spain ruled Louisiana. Settlers would fish on the coast and catch oysters and shrimp in addition to growing sugar cane, cotton and cattle. Pirates regularly sailed through the area in the early 1800s. Today, 1,500 people live on the island, and over 12,000 people visit every year.

With fishing opportunities available during any season and with hundreds of species of fish, Grand Isle is a prime location for angling. You can find Grand Isle fishing opportunities for all skill levels. Some of the top fish species you could catch while inshore Grand Isle fishing are Black Drum, Red Drum, Sheepshead, Spotted Seatrout, and Tarpon. A record 208-pound Tarpon was caught at Grand Isle. If you want to challenge yourself with a Tarpon, July through September are the best months to visit. Bluefin Tunas are not caught often in Louisiana, but a record Bluefin was reeled in at Grand Isle.

Nearshore fish you could target include Bluefish, Cobia, and Spanish Mackerel. There is also good King Mackerel fishing much of the year. If you are venturing offshore, some of the top catches from the bottom include many different species of Grouper and Snapper. There are artificial reefs around Grand Isle as well as other structures where certain fish species like hanging out, such as Black Grouper, Gag Grouper, Red Grouper, Red Snapper, and Vermilion Snapper. It is common to catch hundred-pound Yellowfin Tunas while Grand Isle fishing. You can also target them any time of the year. Blackfin Tuna and Wahoo are also popular fish to target. Blue Marlin, Sailfish, Swordfish, and White Marlin are the around much of the year, making Grand Isle one of the top destinations for fishing in the US.
