Hooking Up Anglers Since 2011.
Iztapa, Guatemala is the Sailfish Capital of the World, and I doubt anyone would be willing to argue differently. Since the 1980’s Guatemalan fishing boats average 15 to 20 Sailfish per day. There are also several records, including Capt. Ron Hamlin’s 124 Sailfish released in a single day on the Captain Hook boat. Also, 57 Sailfish were caught fly fishing in one day on Capt. Chris Scheeder’s boat. It’s these kind of numbers that attract anglers from around the globe to Iztapa.
Offshore fishing Iztapa frequently delivers 20 – 50 Sailfish bites a day during the prime season of December through April. While the average weight is 80 to 90 pounds, many large ones are caught that weigh well over 100 pounds. There are also many Blue Marlin, Dorado (Dolphinfish), Wahoo, and Yellowfin Tuna caught as well.
Closer to shore you can expect to catch Cero Mackeral, Rosterfish, and Snook. Bottom fishing will produce many different Grouper and Snapper species, as well as Jack Crevalle.
